Political parties having policy designed to achieve a certain level of unemployment on its own is fairly rough. But when it's combined with demonising those on welfare, it's awful and only complete arseholes would be in favour of that.

If the unemployed are so critical for the functional health of “the economy”, perhaps it’s time to consider it an essential service, paying award wages.

We do. The award is called jobseeker. It is terribly insufficient though. The union who negotiated it should be sacked.
