This study investigates effects of climate change on compound drought and heat wave (CDHW) events. CDHW events involve prolonged hot temperatures and water shortages, which can obviously worsen each other's impacts. Examples: California wildfires in 2020 and Australian bushfires in 2019-2020.

In the worst-case scenario, by the late 21st century, approximately 20% of global land areas could experience two CDHW events per year, lasting 25 days and becoming four times more severe.

Vulnerable regions that are expected to see the largest increases in CDHW frequency: eastern North America, southeastern South America, Central Europe, East Africa, Central Asia, and northern Australia.
