University of Alabama at Birmingham says state’s supreme court ruling could expose doctors and patients to criminal charges

A medical school in Alabama has paused in vitro fertilization procedures in the wake of the first-of-its-kind decision made by the state’s supreme court on Friday, which ruled that frozen embryos are “children”.

The decision has been widely seen as one that would have serious implications for people seeking in vitro fertilization (IVF) or other assisted reproductive technology treatments.

On Wednesday, spokesperson Savannah Koplon said on behalf of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a research university and academic medical center that is also the largest healthcare provider in the state, that the institution was “saddened that this will impact our patients’ attempt to have a baby through IVF, but we must evaluate the potential that our patients and our physicians could be prosecuted criminally or face punitive damages for following the standard of care for IVF treatments”.

A judge in Alabama ruled the life begins when a guy notices how hot his sister is.

This is hilarious, in a tragic way.

Parents who want children are being denied a chance to have kids in order to protect the lives of kids who are never going to be born.

What am I missing?

It's religion forcing itself into others again. If you can't have children naturally, that's "god's will" and therefore IVF is wrong....

Yeah this is not an unintended consequences situation with them either. I was browsing some conservative subreddits when this news came out and there were a significant number of these theocratic mouth breathers cheering this on.

Actually, it's even more ridiculous. One reason religious types oppose IVF is that the man has to ejaculate into a cup and is therefore guilty of 'spilling his seed'

TIL: You can shove children into a freezer and they won't die

WTF Alabama? Really???

I’m so sick of a certain political party playing games with the people’s trust in science and supplanting it with religious ideology
