Famed for being so badass that after the Anglo-Nepalese war, the British signed a treaty so that the Gurkhas could join their army and fight for them instead.
The British Army still has Gurkha regiments to this day, along with the Indian Army. And they're still badass - if you want an example, check out Dipprasad Pun

Is the Gurkha on his knees, or just really short?
Gurkhas are generally very short. The average height of a Nepalese male is 5ft 4.5in according to Wikipedia
He's probably short but Americans typically were taller than most people at the time IIRC
