OoenStreetMaps has existed for ages, but of course those companies deserve an article for their efforts.

I think the point is OSM is pretty crap in comparison to google maps. Finally having an open mapping standard to compete with google is pretty major if true

Have you used it? Depending on the client it's actually quite decent, maybe not for finding businesses (although it might surprise you in that regard as well).

Sure it'll be open, but it'll be another data mining platform.
