The front facing camera is definitely useful, especially in the work-from-home world, but why do so many tablets still have a rear-facing camera? Even professional/enterprise oriented ones like the Surface line has them. Most tablet cameras are terrible compared to smartphones, with the exception of the iPad, which has a multi-camera setup like an iPhone. Even in the age of ubiquitous smartphones, are there a lot more tablet users who actually take pictures with them than I realize that warrants high end cameras on them? If people don't use them, then wouldn't it make sense to save some component costs and omit them? Maybe put an extra RAM or SSD chip in its place.

That's just my thoughts, but I want to hear what you think. Do people here like or dislike the rear-facing cameras on tablets? Do you think they should be included?

By the way, mods, please let me know if these discussion questions don't fit in /c/technology.

anecdotal but i recently went to the doctor to get some skin lesions checked out and she took photos on a tablet to send to a dermatologist. obviously that's a niche use but stuff like that, also optical character recognition scanning, situations where it's going to be handy to have a larger view of the photo so you can be sure it will be usable.

arguably this would be a good reason to make things more modular, so people who do want/need the rear-camera on a tablet can slot one in, and people who don't can get something else or just nothing.

I think one of the reasons might be that cheaper rear cameras might not add that much cost, or that much space.

Yeah might be niche but handy to have right there when using procreate.
