Explanation: Mehmed the Conqueror, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, was the one who finally conquered Constantinople (now Istanbul) and finished off the ailing Byzantine Empire. He did so by bringing what was, in the 15th century AD, a truly ludicrous amount of cannons, a then-cutting-edge technology, including the largest piece ever made up 'til that point in world history.

Certified "Hold my Raki" moment

You know how it is, late at night, deep in raki and cold water with the boys, and someone challenges you to destroy the age-old nemesis of your rising empire - tale as old as time!

Byzantium joins China and later Belgium who had entirely too much faith in their "impregnable fortifications".

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago (2 children)

For a long time their faith was warranted. And not like they could do much in that situation from what I remember, they didn't have much power to go on the offensive.

Ye, it was a dying empire at that point anyway. But we're just shitposting here :D

Light novel idea: someone like Bismarck or Cavour is isekaid into Byzantium of this era, and has to diplomacy it back into a world power.

Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago

Why'd they change it?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

Well yeah, now that the boys showed up with arty. It was Constantinople before the boys got there.
