First the algorithm changed so now I feel like I'm constantly late to threads and next we had the federation with utterly shit takes popping up left and right.

fidel-salute-big to our mods and admins nonetheless cus a lot has gone into this site over the last few years, but damn...I'm feeling...I don't know, nostalgic for the past?

The advice I have seen is stick to "local" instead of "all" so you don't see deranged liberal threads, though you'll still see the lost liberal wandering aghast into a normal Hexbear thread. And sort by "hot" instead of "active" but I don't really know why that is better?

I sort by new because I am a true poster

[–] [email protected] 26 points 2 years ago

Hot is better for small posts, active prioritizes massive dunk sessions that happen when libs wander in.

I feel like we're on transition and things will come around to where we were before. I've seen a lot of terrible memes and horrible takes - I've also seen some good stuff, mostly from lemmygrad. Anyway, I also appreciate all the work our mods and admins have done. I also, kind of miss just having hexbear only content -- and knowing that I'll miss out on other things if I select only "local".

My method is to pull up local by default, and then venture out into All after I've gotten caught up on everything there.

I like using Subscribed, and am currently just subscribed to Hexbear and Lemmygrad comms.

This is probably the correct way to go in the long run. We are used to just browsing ALL and leaning on the algorithm, but algorithms are garbage-in garbage-out. A certain amount of curation is needed beyond some point.

This brings me more content than just Local, but also keeps a lot of the true trash off of my page. I might add some more comms on other instances over time, but I haven't really seen anything that's been worth dealing with even more insufferable libs than we're already getting on our own stuff.

Just stick to the megathread, there's good vibes in there

Really no reason to ever leave.

Hot and Local, that's the Hexbear way hexbear-static-logo

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 years ago

Just like all those singles in my area

Just so you know you can change your defaults under "settings". I recommend "Local" and "Hot".

Yeah if you don't select local you're just going to be spammed with garbage Lemmy memes and be like NOOOOO what happened to my Hexbear

I really hope we can restore the old Active algorithm, it's still on the table afaik, but I'm told the way that lemmy's database schema works has changed enough that it isn't trivial to switch back to.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 years ago

Sort by Hot gets it a lot closer to the old algorithm, still not as good though. New Active is awful

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago

Feeling you brother, maybe we just need to log off and touch grass for a few weeks. Let the libs lib it out for a while.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago

Seeing the absolute reddit tier takes and facebook memes is wild.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

Sort by "local" or "subscribed"

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

Sorting by local and then alternating active (for the dunking) and hot (for new posts) is working for me. I haven't really ventured out into all beyond lurking because I don't have the energy to get into arguments.

What's a bit more annoying are all the Wandering Redditors, as hilarious as it is to see them get dog-pilled, what was really appealing to me about the site was how I could talk to y'all about stuff and not have to deal with insane takes. And don't get me wrong, if that's the price I have to pay to get to talk to lemmygrad, I'll gladly pay it, but maybe we can be more zealous with the banhammer in the smaller coms.

Anyone have a list of all the lemmygrad communities to easily subscribe to?

It's probably the only stuff from other instances I'd want to see. Other than how to do piracy, that shit's cool.
