Is it ridiculous? Yes.
But I do think it’s a fun workaround to avoid time paradoxes for the writer.

They're using Terminator time travel logic.
The gun wasn't covered in biological matter.
Before the gunpowder ignites in the bullet, it does a boolean check on whether or not the date is before its date of manufacturing. If not, then the gunpowder doesn't light. It's that simple.
