Interesting Media Watch take on this.

The social media ban was driven by News Corp as payback since Meta stopped news articles and paying gravy to News Corp under the media bargaining agreement.

Some might say this is some kind of mafia level protection racket ...

Honestly, meta ahould just ban the media content and move on. I'm sick of this shit waaah facebook is taking our users waaaah no, it's free advertising you decided should pay you somehow and you can go and get fucked.

I agree; Facebook should only be a playground for Dirty Bogans to plan each others Gender Reveal Parties.

It should not be taken seriously by the Media.

I'm not knowledgeable in this area. How can Australia charge Meta for anything when they aren't an Australian company?

I suspect Meta will just do the same as they did in Canada.

Sorry for the late reply, there's a bit of federation lag between aussie.zone and lemmy.world when it comes to comments and votes. It's getting better, only two days lag now, it used to be seven days!

In answer to your question I don't think it's been worked out yet.
