So, I think I got backwards-deck. I play Rocket League, so input lag is a big deal for me there. However, the issue I have seems opposite of what I see online:

  • Using deck controls has noticeable lag
  • Using a wired X-Box controller has noticeable lag
  • Using a Bluetooth X-Box controller works pretty good

Can anyone think of why I would have such bad lag on the built-in controls?

EDIT So this might be display, not input lag!

  • Set Gamescope Disable FPS Limiter On
  • Set Gamescope Allow Tearing On
  • Set Rocket League Vsync Off
  • Set Rocket League FPS to 144

The deck works a lot harder, and fans go crazy, but it's playable without an external monitor now. I think in limiting to the didplay's 60hz, the Deck must be doing something else causing display lag.

That's really bizarre. A lot of rhythm games have a calibration test you can do for both visual and audio lag, the visual lag test would be a great way to get some time measurements of the lag with different controller types.

Edit: Rift of the Necrodancer has a free demo that includes a visual latency test.

Oh perfect, see edited post for a partial solution (so far), I will use this game to test my findings.

If you have any plugins installed, I would start by disabling them. I do not get any noticeable lag off the Steam Deck controls, but to be fair I don’t play anything competitively.

Short of user modifications, I would contact Valve. Their support is excellent.

No plugins, but see edited post for a partial solution (so far). Thanks!

You said some control works well, so it might not be your case, but i will leave the info here for others too.

Make sure your display is set to low latency like a "game mode", otherwise you get massive input lag

Maybe steam input is on when it isn't needed for the game?

Can you turn Steam Input off on the Deck? I did find a partial solution (see edited post)

I dunno. I've never had any issues with input lag so

Rocket league is unplayable on deck/switch. If you're going to play only do it on pc with at least a 144hz monitor

So, this got me thinking. I turned off thr FPS limiter and allowed Tearing in Gamescope. Turned off Vsync and set FPS limiter to 144 in Rocket League. Lo and behold, playable. I think this lay have more to do with the display than the controls.

God forbid people are having fun with games on their platform of choice

No I mean like it's literally unplayable, you're at an immense disadvantage and it sucks.

I bet you use a plain coloured Octane and can't fathom people use other cars, right?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

I don't think you understand, maybe Google it for more information? I don't know how else to help you. You somehow think I'm against people having fun or choices, all I'm saying is if you play on switch/deck you're handicapping yourself. If you don't mind playing at a big disadvantage with no gain then go for it buddy lmao

You know they dropped all Linux support for the game when Take 2 took over, right?
