Ivo van Hove is one of those hit & miss directors for me. He's undeniably good at what he does and his productions always feature a very high level of polish and performance. When he manages to restrain himself (eg A View from the Bridge) the results can be brilliant. On the other hand, his penchant for live video on stage (a conceit I've grown to largely despise) have marred for me what could have been wonderful shows (eg his Broadway production of West Side Story or Network). Still, I'd be very interested in seeing what he does with with JCS. There's a chance I may be in Europe early next year and I'd definitely make a side trip to Netherlands to catch this show if I was able.
Immersive musicals are also in vogue at the moment on both sides of the Atlantic, with Nicholas Hytner's revival of Guys and Dolls in London and Alex Timbers' production of Here Lies Love playing on Broadway.
