Not an ally anymore, I guess. The us embassy will be closed from tomorrow, and all visa processes will be stopped until this situation is resolved, and I don't see this de-escalating soon. I think Petro will threaten to also deport all the "expats" living irregularly in Colombia in retaliation. We will see.

Of course you're right; it's not meant to. More illegal immigrants means more scared, easily exploitable people who will never reach out for help out of fear of deportation. To Republicans, that means cheap labor.
Unfortunately what it's actually going to mean is the rise of a North American cartel. Gangs draw strength from acting as defacto enforcement when the state becomes unreliable. Republicans think they can suppress or control gangs to a sufficient degree that they'll still be able to profit... or maybe they haven't thought this through at all. I guess we'll see.
This sounds unhinged
