Reviews say it’s not very fun beyond a few hours and super alpha

Best of 24? what, it’s fun about 10-15hrs then you see that there is no more content. Combat is super basic and also the default game mode is just you racing against the clock. If you don’t build and get new lands fast enough, you have no chance beating the enemy. 40 bucks is too much for this early access title. It has potential though, but it’s still raw.

What is the clock deadline you're racing against? That's a very strange mechanic for a city builder.

From the trailer it looks really great but I'm very reluctant to purchase anything in early access

A rival AI lord. It's part of the game's goal to conquer the lands around and establish a proper fief, and the rival AI will take control of all the surrounding lands quite fast, so it gets to a point where you just don't have the resources to win the fight. This game is actually somewhere in between a city builder and something like Total War. Best use I've found for the game is to create maps for medieval towns and regions for your RPG games.

Oh, OK that's actually a bit more interesting. Does the combat system mean you can then invade their settlement and/or fight to control resources? If there were diplomacy mechanics as well it might interest me but I'm not overly interested in competitive mechanics in a city builder. I'd rather just relax and build an awesome community.

Sounds like a fancy version of The Settlers.

In the default mode you have to beat your enemy and only way to do it, is to build new towns, upgrade soldiers and get territories asap. If you are too slow, good luck at fighting multiple armies with your ”pesant squad”. So in a way you are racing against the clock and you don’t have much time to admire what you built. But there is a game mode where you can just relax. But that just sounds content cut off from a game that doesnt have much content so I even didn’t try it.

The hype for this game is wild. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of positive and potential ... But right now there's nothing more. The game falls flat after a few hours. There are other medieval city builders with some fighting....even in early access and further along. This game, at it's current pace, may need a whole year or more to be meaningful/worthwhile.

How much does a PC Gamer review cost nowadays?

"the best city builder of 2024"

I mean, I like what they have so far but uh..... It's a pretty low bar, it'll be hard to trip over...

Fun for what they have, but after maybe 10 hours you've played every aspect of the game. Each new game feels exactly like the game you just left. There isn't much "design tweaking" you can do, and there isn't much you can unlock that changes any gameplay.

Still, I have it with game pass and I keep it just in case something updates. It is fun to play. And you can disable the weird competitive features. This is a city builder, not call of duty. I don't care to play against an opponent.
