What do you think. Just like Old Steve did, could there be a time especially after Sam's tenure as Cap, that he would pass the Shield too to Bucky. He could very well pass it quite early in the MCU, like in the Brave New World film itself, like if Bucky has a brief or mid/post-credit scene.

Sam's wings in the trailers performed and looked very, very powerful, hence the Shield could be passed to a new user like Bucky, and the Captain America mantle could be retired (even if not forever in the MCU) too.

It's a big multiverse, and everyone loves fan service, so bet on Sebastian Stan having some cool moments with the shield.

But ultimately, Bucky Barnes is an international man of mystery, which usually doesn't lend itself well to telling the kinds of stories that writers for Captain America are usually trying to tell.

If the MCU continues to follow the comics, we may see more of US Agent in the costume, than Bucky Barnes.

From a writing perspective, Sam Wilson is the strongest place to start for a classic Captain America story. His entire backstory is set in the United States, or on deployment in the US armed forces. He's a veteran. And the MCU version of Sam Wilson isn't from a completely different era of history then the audience.

Like you said, it's a big multiverse. I expect when we get a big multiversal film, like Secret Wars, we'll get lots of fun variations, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Bucky with a shield.

But in the mainline MCU, I think Sam is the new Cap and will be for a while.

I doubt Disney would be ok with 2 Caps simultaneously in the same universe unless Steve comes back.

But one way I could see getting Bucky as Cap would be on Battleworld, where we will get heroes from the multiverse pitted against each other. Having a different universe's Bucky show up in the shiny Cap costume would be excellent fan service
