Back in university I published my first games in Unity. Compared with the competition is was brilliant. It was free, it's bugs could be worked around compared to GameMaker, and on paper if you game ever got popular the software would scale with you and you could publish your games on any platform you want.

I can't say the same thing now, since I can't trust Unity after their policy changes. Planning on moving to Godot when (read if) I start my next project.

I know I spend a lot of time in open source circles but wow I have not heard a single thing about Unity since that fiasco. On the contrary I've seen Godot news and information much more frequently.

Before that was one of the events that likely contributed to all the layoffs: the company’s disastrous deployment of its Runtime fee

The fallout led to Unity revamping the runtime fee and resulted in CEO John Riccitiello retiring less than a month after the runtime announcement.

Oh, they actually resigned in the immediate aftermath of that? Nice.

I'm somewhat doubtful that's the actual, or directly correlating reason for layoffs. But if you put it like that, even worse is that the CEO created that shit-show, immediately left, and one-and-a-half years later they're still feeling the negative impact.
