Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in [email protected]. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @[email protected], @[email protected], or @[email protected].

And he rebuked big European powers. “When you ask those guys, why can’t you spend more on national security, their argument is because it would require us to make cuts to welfare programs, to unemployment benefits, to being able to retire at 59 and all these other things,” Rubio said. “That’s a choice they made. But we’re subsidizing that?”

So the US will start spending less on military and more on social services? /s

No they will shift the spending to the surveillance state

This article is so unbelievably stupid.

No, the US did not "win two world wars for Europe". They were late to the party both times, only joining once they were sure they could profit.

And the EU is not neglecting military spending because of social policies, but because of the lack of credible adversaries. We just bled Russia of most of its army (I mean equipment, not waves of ineffectual flesh) without even getting near it.

And the flip side is that the whole world has been going along with the US because they spent money on guaranteeing global free trade. If that's over, so is unlimited deficit spending.

This is a childish tantrum from the rich idiot kid that doesn't understand where the family wealth comes from, and it's going to be a rough awakening once they realise the world can go on without them.

And the EU is not neglecting military spending because of social policies

That is probably just channeling the current German chancelor who in the context of the constitutional debt brake said that they don't want to lower social spending in exchange for more military spending and was advocating for debt financed military spending instead.

That headline could have ended before the apostrophe.

If there is a kind of US Gvment coupe going on, which so appears to me. And if there comes a peace plan according to the red ines which Trump & Putin have discussed; so No Nato for Ukraine, giving up (temporarily) the annexed territories, and (partial) withdrawal of US forces boots from the EU,

Then there will be a provisional 3OOO km Ukraine wall between east and West Ukraine, in need of min 30K (EU) military boots plus all additional ground, tech and air equipment. If this peace deal will be reached this year, EU will not be able to deliver this security guarantee unless they invoke some emergency (W)EU security article. If in the USA autocracy keeps growing, and dito in the R.F., with or without their current leaders; then we will have again a world war again, within 5 year, I fear. Also I believe that the P.P.P might d ecline with approxinate 20-30% world wide

Well this is the worse case scenario. But not unlikely, if circumstances don't change.

What can Europe do in 5 years? Cut partly, the welfare state and up defence to a minimum 5%. At least we'll have something to defend us with. We are being fucked as hell.
