Hello fellow Far Side fans!

About this community and how I post the comic strip… Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips and one of those was The Far Side. These days of course you find just about anything online including www.thefarside.com where they post several comics a day and I repost them here. Just to note, the date you see in my posts is not the initial release date, but the date they were posted on the website.

The Far Side is a single-panel comic created by Gary Larson and syndicated by Chronicle Features and then Universal Press Syndicate, which ran from December 31, 1979, to January 1, 1995 (when Larson retired as a cartoonist). Somehow, it seems to have increased from 500-lb to be an 800-lb gorilla today.

"800-pound gorilla" is an American English expression for an entity so powerful that it can act without regard to the rights of others or the law.[1] The phrase is rooted in a riddle joke:

Q. Where does an 800-pound gorilla sit?
A. Anywhere it wants to.

Unless maybe Larson made an error, and it should have been "800-lb" even then.

Yeah, I only see one reference online to "500-lb gorilla". I think that he maybe just misremembered the phrase.

Google nGrams doesn't have any instances of the phrase, so that can't really help with frequency.

They probably realized that 500 lb isn't that unusual for the average American and looking like a gorilla isn't that unusual either.
