I think it’s a big overexageration that leaving meta is social suicide. Call your friends.

One thing we do need to replace though is meetup. I thrive there but organizing on meetup is terrible and expensive.

In small town America, if you’re not on Facebook, you simply don’t exist. Deleting my Facebook account exiled me from town gossip, community events, and even basic recognition. I became a ghost in my own life.

The context is there and it is true. My village government, the library, the schools don't post updates to their websites, it's all facebook. The local booster clubs and social groups are all on facebook. We do push them to post in real outlets too, and one local booster club publishes a Newsletter, but the default is facebook.

I know it’s difficult but just call a friend who is on facebook in the group for updates.

Enough people start doing that and the group will realize there’s a demand for off Facebook communication.

Even mastadon would be sufficient. But a signal group or even sms is enough.

That is malfeasance. To post government updates to a site that requires signup and devours user data -- and nowhere else -- is either lazy or malicious. Surely, they have their own sites.

Somewhat related, the local burner community is just finally realizing that Facebook is not the right place to congregate. I guess fucking over their users has a long tail.

Good source. But how the hell is anyone still on any Meta platform or TikTok? Like, this is a longstanding, known issue.

Social pressure in a lot of cases. My partner is still on Facebook for that very reason, though she has made it a point to only share queer joy on there.

Different zones on the same spectrum.
