I like to tell my husband about various things our daughter does when I know she's probably listening. "She helped me with dishes, I didn't even ask. She just came over and said she wanted to help, so when I asked her to dry a pile of bowls, she didn't even hesitate. She was so careful and gentle and so thorough."

I read once that kids believe things they overhear more than the things that they are directly told and have been trying to do this ever since.

Yeah. Also if you phrase things poorly they take the bad meaning all the time never say ''you're no dummy'' you need to be more like ''you can do this, your very smart''

This happened to me... nothing destroys self esteem like parents bad mouthing you for stuff you thought was cool
