I got a message on LinkedIn about a job, it seems legit. The issue is as soon as I replied, she basically told me to apply as quickly as possible because it's time sensitive.

I don't know why this kind of rubs me the wrong way, I guess because I'm in a different time zone and I'm expected to literally drop everything for a job I might not even have an actual chance for.

Also she is the person who I would be working with, my potential future boss, and also the co owner of the company.

Am I overreacting? It just seems unnecessarily stressful idk. Also I'm very afraid of red flags now cause I ignored them at my last company and it was a nightmare.

I'm guessing it's a small company if the owner is personally doing the hiring? In that case, it might be as simple as they need someone for a role asap that's why they're in a hurry; but yes it's not a good look. It can also be a potential scam, as a lot scams use pressure as a modus operandi. I'd say just do more research on the company and the co-owner to determine if they are legit. No legit company will ask for money or PII as part of the application process, so if they start asking for things that isn't necessary for a job application, end it there.

I mean the co owner is legit, and I can't find anything bad about the company online.

The application requires an email and asks what country I live in. I haven't gotten to any scam part yet, but it's weird how she hasn't replied to my message in almost an hour despite saying I need to apply quickly. Does that mean she's over it and I shouldn't apply?

People have meetings which might be longer than an hour. If she's presenting something, it might be a bit weird if she told her audience that she needs to answer a message.

I mean it's been like 2 hrs now, do you think I should still apply? It's gonna be a rushed application anyways so idk

People have meetings that are longer than two hours, or one meeting ends and the next starts immediately. If you want to apply then do it.

Idk what application process you've done or your definition of pii. all applications seem to request pii like email, address, name, bday, etc in my experience. Individually they may not be pii, but any combo and theyre definitely pii.

Yes I should've clarified "confidential" PII. It's just the initial job application, so all they need at this point is OP's name, general location, and contact info; which they already have from linkedin alone. OP can send in their resume/CV, and that's it. No need to give your exact address, birthday, etc. until you're well into the hiring process already. Not in this initial phase.

I would definitely be suspicious. Be wary of them trying to get you to "buy supplies" for the job that you would be reimbursed for or any other excuse to get you to pay money in order to start the job, that is a common employment scam.

I think the only thing in the list I don't have is noise cancelling headphones, but I can buy those quickly and I don't think she'd want money for them (there's no way she can ship them to me anyways)

if it doesnt pass a sniff test move on, easiest thing. many jobs are nightmares sadly. I will say no job is time sensitive enough for it to be your problem or responsibility during the application process. if a company is in situation where its truly time sensitive it means they fucked up and its their problem and there are likely other issues.

[–] Djfok43@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Maybe it's possible the person quit and they might need an asap replacement. Its also strange because she wrote in her status that previous applicants can apply again to some new listing.

Why not just contact them? Why do they have to apply again?

[–] jatone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You can try rationalizing their behavior but honestly its immaterial. a lot of hiring people play stupid games with people during the process. you can trying to figure out wtf they're doing but honestly its not worth your time.

just decide if its worth your effort to reapply or not and then take the action.

Tbh I started applying in their website.. seemed pretty basic. Had to select my availability, years of customer service experience, then add my resume (which took me hours to edit), then when I thought I was done it asked to attach a recording introducing myself??! Wtf it's 9pm here I don't have time for this bs!!!!! And I have no way of knowing what the next steps will be either

take a 30 minute recording of your resume and add some audio like 'Hi, please enjoy this reading of my resume you were suppose to read but were too lazy to and instead decided people should send you a video'

[–] Djfok43@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

LOL I think they just want to like.. assess how superficially charming and likeable I am through a short recording which is cringe as f.. there's way more to a person's likeability than how good they are at presenting when they're being recorded but ok.

Like wtf do they even want me to say? It's for a virtual assistant job. OH HEY ITS ME, ALEXA, HOW CAN I HELP YOU TODAY? I AM SO EXPERIENCED PICK ME PICK ME PICK ME PICK ME

[–] peto@lemm.ee 5 points 1 week ago

Time pressure doesn't mean a scam, but remember the job application process is a chance for you to assess them as well. Some people think everything is a time critical emergency and they really aren't worth working for.

If you are talking to them directly and they divert you to some application portal. I don't know, doesn't seem like it's that much of a problem. If they need you now, but can't cut through the red tape of a company you own?
