the big stickied thread is getting cluttered with lots of new people and the "how was your week" thread isn't a great fit for introductions, so it seems about time to make this a dedicated thread of its own so peoples' posts aren't getting lost.

tell us a little bit about yourself, folks. don't gotta be too specific or revealing, just whatever you want to put out there. this'll be a good way of getting to know all the people you're now on here with

Hi, I'm Lionir but you can just call me Lio.

I'm a young adult and I've been involved, even if from quite a distance in the making of Beehaw. I speak French as I've notice a few others do.

I'm not sure how to present myself. I'd say I tend to be quite pragmatic in how I talk even though I think I'm generally rather emotionally aware and a good listener. I don't think that this means that my rationality is more important to me than my emotional sensibility but rather that I'm not really sure how to be useful outside of a pragmatic approach.

I have a wide range of interests. I advocate for privacy, freedom, better working conditions and more generally human rights. I think often about how power structures (for example, capitalism) affect people. I like to talk about what I think is good design. I enjoy anime and video games. I do some programming as I have my own website and maintain packages on Flathub. I'm always looking to learn new things!

I'm glad to see this place alive and well.

Hi hawbeeists 😊 (like hobbyists, but Beehaw, get it?)

I came from Reddit. I like plants and animals and occasionally going hiking. I live in Atlantic Canada and am currently displaced by hurricane Fiona (still, after seven months), but the end is in sight and I should be able to go home soon! I have a BSc (major in Env. Sci.) and I like to draw digitally and play with string (crochet, knitting, etc.). I'm providing some 2D art to the upcoming free Steam game Jerma's Big Adventure 2, which has been an absolute blast to work on. I've mainly been playing Sea of Thieves and Diablo III lately. I'm also a lesbian and most likely autistic. She/her.

Edit: je parle français aussi, mais il faut vous dire que mon français est rouillé 😅

Hey everyone, I'm Juniper. I'm a trans woman living in Vancouver currently. Very shy, but I love games, ttrpgs, mycology, worldbuilding, and photography. I've recently picked up leather working as a new hobby, and I want to start to learning Italian soon. Lovely to join this community!

Howdy from Austin, TX! Excited to be here. I have a love for strange sounds, and stranger places (virtual or not). Current projects include: trying to teach myself how to sketch in 10 minutes a day, writing my dissertation, learning Spanish, and playing go (I'm terrible).

First post! Just throwing myself in here. Initially I was interested in this community as a Reddit alternative, but I have to admit I'm pretty impressed with the coherent vision that this site has for how it wants to exist. I've been lurking for a little bit and I think this site provides a totally different type of value than other social media spaces! That's amazing! So I'm excited to contribute what value and content I can and be a part of the ethos.

@alyaza
I go by hybrid havoc. I work in information technology for higher education, dealing largely with Ellucian Colleague and other peripheral applications. I am also the admin of https://darkfriend.social which is a Mastodon instance that was spun up for fans of the Wheel of Time fantasy series. I am a big fan of fantasy and science fiction in general.

Mostly my darkfriend.social account is my primary account on the Fediverse. I may occasionally post here from my beehaw account.

Hello all!

I'm Hazelnoot (she/they), a Software Developer from the USA. My main interests are Programming, Gaming (PC and TTRPGs), Anime, and Retrocomputing. I'm also proudly transgender and would love to connect with other LGBTQ+ people here!

I've got the usual story - decade Reddit user being driven out by API restrictions. In fact, this is actually my second time being pushed off a mainstream platform and onto the Fediverse. I previously left Twitter for Mastodon after Elon Musk took over and all moderation disappeared. I've been very interested in Lemmy as a replacement for Reddit, and I'm excited to be here on Beehaw!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago

I just want to say I'm excited to be here! Feels like how message boards used to feel back in the day with the number of users not being crazy high like other social media platforms.

Osiyo!

Late 20s Cherokee in the southeast. Love books, storytelling, art, music and figuring out how things work and fixing them when they break. Oh and also hats, tools, things tools go in, I could probably be here all day.

I spend a good chunk of my spare time working on mechanical things like car parts, machinery, electronics, whatever I can find in my own little lab that I set-up. Always love learning new things. Most recently I've been trying to learn as much as I can about audio equipment and how all that works.

Heya from another reddit refugee:

I'm a late 20s guy (he/him) working on getting a PhD in materials science and engineering. I'm pretty optimistic about Lemmy, and Beehaw in particular.

I think that right now the thing that I'm missing most from reddit is the plethora of niche communities for very specific interests, but I'm aware that's something that comes with time and a big enough userbase. For now we've got Gaming, if we get enough people we'll probably get MMORPGs or similar. I don't mind waiting.

Other communities I'd love to see pop up would be for things like scuba diving, specific TTRPGs like Lancer, more specific science communities (edit: looks like there's already one for space), biking, solarpunk aesthetic stuff, Q/A communities (like r/askscience and r/askhistorians), and so on. (I actually haven't searched for all of those yet... Maybe some already exist!)

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

Howdy beehaw,

I'm Tammany Tiger - you can call me Tammany, or Tiger, or both, I really don't mind. If I like you then you may call me Tammy. My pronouns are He/Him, but I don't care/mind if you use plural pronouns on me. Mid 20's. Currently finishing up higher education at the masters level. From the U S of A.

I'm into vidja gaems, gardening, economics, board and table top games, writing, and reading! Used to do DND but I sucked at it - hopefully I can get a hang of it one day. Otherwise I'm pretty open minded, and won't judge you too harshly. Just don't be a needless jerk and we'll be great!

I'm here cause I'm a Reddit refugee, like many, but I'm excited to call this place home.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

I'm Gris:

I'm a medical student in the US and a refugee from reddit. I have a lot of different interests that vaguely align with what seems to be the topics of interest here. Things like politics, technology, ethics/philosophy, science(particularly as it relates to the life sciences and medicine).

I chose this instance of Lemmy specifically due to it's fairly neutral stance to content and the general push for conscientious community interaction (and the generalized focus on a few different subjects, rather than left-wing politics being a central theme pushed me here rather than some other instances I looked at) .

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

Hello from another reddit refugee as well.

Millennial born in the later 80s. Central US. I work in software engineering but rarely have much to do with it outside of work.

First off, I am incredibly happy to be here. It's feels great to find somewhere that seems to be a community once again that also allows for me to also no longer feel like a "product" that exists merely for profit like all of the other social media sites for which I have ultimately left. After looking around at many of the lemmy instances, I read the side bar on this one and was immediately attracted to the prospect and ideals of this community while still being able to engage in the lemmy-verse (is that the term?).

A bit about me. I love: Ballroom dancing, tabletop RPGs (D&D), renaissance faires, gardening, being creative, playing music, current events and worldnews, ww2 history, antiques, reading, watching old movies. People tell me I'm an old soul often. I'm goofy, an introvert that can be extremely socially but only for a limited amount of time. I used to play and do regional tours in a rock band. Worked in the music industry for about 4 years but burned out quickly after the band. Favorite book is: "A demon haunted world: Science as a candle in the dark" by Carl Sagan. I'm an atheist since about the age of 18ish. Related to religion, Secular Buddhism is something I have been reading about lately that is something that I have been enjoying. "What the buddah taught" was a fantastic book that was a great foundational look at buddhism in general (not secular). I used to game a lot and still do on occasion but not like I used to. Exclusively interested in casual stuff nowadays. Played too many hours of wow... lol.

Most of all I love spending time with my family. I have an amazing SO and a young toddler that is my world.

I aspire to some day own a renaissance faire shop selling artwork my wife and I produce.

Hi Everyone

As with a lot of people here (most people?) the recent Reddit API changes (among other things) have encouraged me to go and look at what alternatives are out there. My username is new for Beehaw so not related at all to Reddit.

I live in the UK, am a parent to a 2 year old (great age, but it is knackering!) and fitting in with the stereotype I’m a bit of a techy, enjoy sci-fi, Gaming (playing Tears of the Kingdom right now) and D&D

Looking forward to taking part in the community

Edit: Just thought I’d add - I mostly used Reddit for following (and very occasionally taking part) in various Parenting, TV, Movies and Techy subreddits. I do like checking out episode discussions after watching a show to see what other people thought. Hopefully these kinds of things will be happening over here!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Hello everyone, I’m one of the many from Reddit. I’m in the Midwest US and work as a registered nurse. I enjoy reading, video games (e.g., BOTW, Overwatch), table top games (e.g., Dominion), camping, and got a little into running. I consider myself a fairly goofy and laid back person.

I love learning about anything I can. This whole shift with Reddit really forced some introspection on how I interact with online communities and what I am hoping to get out of those connections. I realize the Beehaw communities are smaller, but I sense more personal connections, versus mostly viewing and scrolling content already upvoted by 10k people.

I am inspired by what the admins are doing with Beehaw and other Lemmy instances, and I’m looking forward to sharing and connecting more with other hawbeeists (I like that term from @[email protected]).

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

hello. I'm a reddit lurker glad to potentially have more community, but we'll see if I can stick it out. I think reddit persisted in my life because I didn't log in almost ever :)

anyway: I'm a software engineer, queer (they/them), near-vegan, and happily autistic. here to talk about surviving to 2040. interested in books, video games (currently 11 years into my longest rimworld save), spiders, gay memes, sustainability, trans rights, and noninvasive home tech.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

Hello!

Like many others, I discovered Lemmy following the announcement of the Reddit API changes.

I had previously explored Mastodon, but to be honest I wasn't a big Twitter user in the first place, so I didn't really get the point.

However, I used Reddit extensively, and while Lemmy has plenty of differences its similar enough to enjoy using so far.

As far as other social sites I've used, I started off on the SA Forums, and also used Fark before going to Digg. When Digg made its big v4 change or whatever, I went to Reddit. Seems I keep jumping ship haha.

Hello there hawbeeists (I’ll just steal that, if you don’t mind, @[email protected] :D) So, since I am bad at introductions, here’s a quick overview of my day, since nothing too special happened: At my job as Quality Manager for a CO2 extraction company (“extracting foodstuffs like sunflower using CO2 to get sunflower extract”, not “doing something to get CO2”), I have been reading up on my country’s laws regarding processing insects.

Also, I plan to look over the bachelor’s thesis of a good friend of mine who studies aerospace engineering.

At home, I went outside with my two dogs (a 1 year old Eurasian and a ~6 year old Spitz mix) and until a couple minutes ago I played a round of Natural Selection 2 (playing Xenos, naturally).

Edit: Oh and one cool thing: I repaired my headset by cutting off the broken headset jack and soldering on a new one. So ya, new skill unlocked!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

Hello all, and thank you for the opportunity to be a part of Beehaw. As with others, motivated to explore due to Reddit API drama, however even if that gets resolved I am excited about engaging here. Really appreciated the thoughtfulness and intention behind the information posts by the founders, and kudos to those who created this space. At 60+ I may be among the older members, but really I don't know which is just fine with me.

I've been fascinated by the development, successes, and failures of the internet. It's a long way from my first computer programming classes using punched cards. Even though I didn't pursue that career line that curiosity keeps leading me to the emerging and less commercialized spaces in social media. Along the way I have enjoyed hearing perspectives from different generations, diverse groups, and from across the globe so thank you for sharing.

Lots of interests including literature (Jane Austen in particular), rock music, gardening, art museums, occasional travels, and NHL hockey. I live in the Southeast of the US. Prefer not to sit in political spaces for too long, but generally moderate liberal.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

My introduction to online communities was through listservs and Usenet in the early days of the eternal September (1993-1994). I begrudgingly joined various corporate social media platforms to keep up with friends and family; thought that Reddit (a decade ago anyway) carried some of the spirit of old Usenet but knew a centralised corporate platform would eventually start eating its users. I'm hopeful that the various manifestations of the fediverse will gradually turn the tide of the internet back towards decentralisation.

I dithered over whether to use the slightly anonymous handle that I've used on Reddit and a few other platforms, or a less anonymous one that I've used in more places – ended up choosing the one that I've used on Mastodon accounts among many others.

IRL I alternately call myself a professional filer and a professional queer, as I work for an LGBTIQ+ archive. Politics, literature, and tech seem to be well covered here; I think the communities I'll miss the most from Reddit are the ones devoted to coffee and stationery.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

Hey everyone!

I’m Mike. And like a lot of new users here, I’m part of the Reddit migration.

I’m a writer and part-time student, with a love for small personal websites and blogs, Linux, travel and coffee. I have a Mastodon, but I find I tend to do better with community-based rather than people-based “broadcast” social media.

I might be more of a lurker for a while, but I’m looking forward to getting involved in the conversations here.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

Hello all. I’ve been lurking for a couple of weeks and made the leap today as I’ve decided this is more my home than mastodon.

I’m from the Isle of Wight (small island off the south coast of England for people that don’t know) but now live in London.

I enjoy lots of nonsense and want to keep my online world candy floss and conflict free.

Hey thread, made an account on here yesterday in the case that reddit actually decides to go through with the api change. My pronouns are he/him, and I like to make content on YouTube. Sorry for the short reply, not sure what else to put here.

Hello! I've discovered Beehaw a few months ago, but then I never really used it till now, as the new Reddit update is happening. I am living near Eastern USA. I am interested in languages (more specifically constructed languages), psychology, and gaming. Can't wait to see how this community goes!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago
