"I bet today is the day no new community can surprise my with its existence."

Unix what?

[–] [email protected] 38 points 1 year ago (2 children)

We like thigh high socks and programming :3

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Never thought I'd seriously contemplate wearing thigh highs while programming, but here I am.

It's very comfy and very cute!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My feet get too warm to be comfortable like that, but I'm with you on the programming. The coming winter might change that though <3

I like your plant, maybe I should print one :D

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Thank you! I got it as a gift, also got a huge real plant but it's outside the framing

[–] Vex_Detrause 34 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I bet I can do that too

Fails to install arch.

Installs mint instead.

Browses socks online

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

it's okie! have you tried archinstall? it is a script built in in the iso that helps you install it!

[–] Vex_Detrause 3 points 1 year ago

I don't program so I follow online tutorials and it's hard to install without the need to troubleshoot the problems.

Manjaro has been my first entry into Arch and I've been nothing but happy with it a month or so of use later. 10 minute install, worked perfect out of the box and has done so ever since.

Almost 20 years of Linux on the desktop and I'd never thought to dare try an Arch based system until now.

Monitor desk mount on a glass table? You sure got balls

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Everyone is telling me this but why should I be scared?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's a lot of weight for a pane of glass. Additionally, if it's tempered (which I suspect it must be), then when it fails, it'll fail catastrophically. It'll literally explode, sending glass bits everywhere. Now, it's actually not as dangerous as it sounds, the pieces of glass will be "dull" and won't cut to the bone, but can still cause nicks and scratches. You also risk breathing in glass dust. The reason why tempered glass can explode is because it's been cooled in such a way so that the exterior is putting the interior under pressure, and the interior is pushing out and giving the exterior strength. However, microfractures can form over time, especially when the glass flexes (like heavy weight being unsupported by a non-glass structure). As these microfractures occur, the pane gets weaker and weaker until the exterior can no longer keep the interior under pressure, at which point the entire thing explodes.

Tempered glass desks are pretty safe so long as you aren't putting too much weight on them, but a monitor mount, especially one that tall, is going to exert a ton of torque on the glass.

Thank you for the complete explanation, the desk itself is quite thick and Ive had it for 3 years so I wasnt too concerned. Are those microfractures usually visible?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not usually. I don't know if you have any instructions still laying around, or if you know who the desk was made by, but you might wanna double check if it's tempered glass or not. If it's tempered glass then you might wanna consider moving the mount off the glass if possible. If it's not tempered glass then it might actually be fine despite technically being weaker, however I can't tell how thick the glass is (you could also consider taking measurements and seeing approximately how much weight it can withstand using a calculator like this; the glass may be thick enough either way).

Arch linux is just amazing, I tried others but I always come back to it. It's just better for how I use my computer: tinkering, programming and gaming

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I been wanting to dip into Linux again but the last time I tried, games didn't run great on it. Maybe it's time to try again

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Browse proton db for your games

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I was always wondering what she was saying in that scene, thank you!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I listened to a song that samples this phrase BEFORE I knew of Lain and when I watched that scene the first time, I legit got goosebumps. Since then, some days the sentence just loops around in my head for hours, cursed.

I don't even speak Japanese 😭
