Yes, the Twitter post includes a photo of them. Personally I think that even if there was a low risk of transmission given how open of a space a hockey rink is, the players on that team should be applauded for leading by example and using their public status to promote mask wearing. I'm sure they have many young, easily-influenced fans and I think it's great for them to show their fans that mask wearing, even in sports, is perfectly fine.
I get that they want to lead by example, but we're not going to be in this pandemic forever, and wearing a mask while doing intensive exercise at a professional level just doesn't work if you're actually trying your best to win.
Clearly it does work, as they beat one of the world's best hockey teams 6-1. A five point lead at that level of competitive sports is a clear indicator of a thorough ass-whooping. I'd like to think that given the fact that they're professional athletes competing at the highest level of sport, they're aware of what does and doesn't affect their ability to try their best. I used to be a varsity athlete in college and while I'm still in good shape, the gap between my athletic knowledge and performance and these women's is enormous. They're far more in tune with what their bodies require and what their bodies can go without than the average person.
I think the benefits in relation to their personal health and in the way of normalizing an essential form of PPE, vastly outweighs what little respiratory benefit they would have gained had they not worn the masks. I'm really unsure how you feel that them wearing a mask "doesn't work" and I guarantee that team didn't just haphazardly decide to wear masks for that game-- it almost certainly was something they did during practice to ensure that it wouldn't impede their performance in any meaningful way.
Sorry, I got myself a bit confused, I thought the title said tennis so thought that there would be less than 2 people on the court per side, so social distancing between players would apply. From my experience playing tennis is wouldn't have made sense to wear a mask when running around a court.
I don't understand your argument about "ass-whooping". According to the article @[email protected] linked Russia was very much expected to lose:
Anna Shokhina scored ROC’s first goal of the game, which was actually the first goal a Russian team has ever scored against against Canada in Olympic women’s hockey.
Also it's not like only the Canadians played with masks, for most of the time the Russians did as well until their tests came out negative.
I don’t understand your argument about “ass-whooping”. According to the article @[email protected] linked Russia was very much expected to lose:
How does that preclude the fact that the Russian team got their asses whooped? Are you saying that because an ass whooping was expected, that somehow means that the Canadian women's team winning... wasn't an ass whooping?
Also it’s not like only the Canadians played with masks, for most of the time the Russians did as well until their tests came out negative.
Irrelevant. My point is that these women clearly knew that they could perform at an extremely high level while wearing masks.

When I first read this I thought only the Canadians wore masks and won despite of that. Then I read the article. By no means I am saying ass-whooping did not occur :)

That I understand. But how that's connected to the outcome of the game, I still don't understand.
