I’m not loving this. Seems like there’s been 4 or 5 reds this year because of where players are ending up with no intention to rather than because of the actual tackle.

Reckless, no. Dangerous, absolutely. I think the red is harsh, but planting your studs in your opponents ankle is dangerous regardless of wether you intended to do it or not

This makes a perfect case for an "orange" card- no intention, 50-50 (due to the Copenhagen player also putting his leg there) but also dangerous in the outcome. Could be yellow, but also could be an orange card due to the errantness of both.
Geez, every time someone gets their foot/ankle accidentally stepped on doesn't need to be a red card.
I understand the frustration coming from United fans since it was obviously not intentional but that's a red all day. Obviously endangers the safety of the opponent (the ankle is close to breaking).

The reason why you know this is a stupid red is if this exact contact didn't happen and the other player arrived half a second later, no one would even suggest Rashford had done something dangerous.
It's just more absolute nonsense refereeing based on the outcome of a situation instead of looking at it critically.
This to me is as clear a red as it could be. I don't know why people are complaining.
It’s accidental… BUT Rashford could have been quicker to make an effort and remove his foot. He knew (it’s possible to feel) you are not stepping on grass, therefore could have made an effort to remove the foot as fast as possible. But he didn’t. Red card!
This happens 47 times per Sunday league game lol. Whether it's shielding the ball, jumping at a corner and landing on the guy next to you, trodding on the end of the toe. All painful little knocks that just happen because two guys competing for the ball can't see the god damn future and know exactly what the opposition will do.
he wasn't even looking at the attacker, was merely making himself big to shield the ball. When I heard this was a stupid red I really didn't think I was going to agree so whole heartedly lmfao.

Rashford’s foot starts moving in the direction of where the stomping happens before the other player’s foot. He could have not predicted the foot will be there by the time his foot gets there as well. Completely accidental and wasnt dangerous play at all. What is the red for?

LFC fan here, was happy seeing the result, but this just taints it for me. maybe the game is changing, but imo growing up playing, this is NEVER A RED. bitch please he doesnt even raise his foot to tackle or do any sort of dangerous action. its literally a standard screen by moving across the opponent. he happens to catch the ankle.

This. There's no more check for intent. He tries to make himself big and when he set in motion his planting of the foot, the opponents leg was not there. He also doesn't come in flying or anything. Harsh.
Textbook red, this thread is tripping.
It's a bit similar to the remero one the other day. Rashford is clearly just focussing on the ball and the player moves into him as much as he moves into the player but it's unfortunate timing. I can see why both are given red but they can feel harsh based on the real time speed

For me this is the same thing as a racing incident in Formula 1, there are some cases where contact that looks bad especially in slo-motion reply or a single frame will happen, it doesn't mean that each and every single such incident must be a red card.
Intent should matter, force should matter, if the contact was avoidable should matter, if there was recklessness in the players movement should matter.
The Copenhagen players foot was not there until Rashford was half way through the motion of positioning his foot there, he didn't step with any extra force other than just positioning his body there.
I am not saying this is not a red by whatever the rule is right now, I am saying how I personally want it to be. I don't want to see any player off the pitch because of incidents like this.

He watched the ball, took a step before the opponent he did not even see. How the fuck is this a red?
I really don't understand the controversy in this. Yes it unfortunate and accidental, but why is that a factor? If he seriously injured the player as he could easily have done there would be no furor about this. It reminds me of Jones vs Spurs - unfortunate for the player but the correct call.
