He had huge red flags in terms of character, has been a compete bust and is making Jamarcus Russell’s deal look like a bargain.

Cleveland could have been a SB contender with a decent QB and instead they gave their fans this epic disaster.

If this isn’t the worst contract of all time, what signings are worse?

Very original post, very novel thoughts, definitely haven’t seen this in this sub 14 times this year, well done

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I have full confidence that this Brown's FO has at least one more historically-unprecedented bad deal in them. I believe in them!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Easily. The Browns went all in thinking this was their move to get them to the SB and there's still time but the early returns aren't looking good. Generally speaking, Watson is better than Mayfield, but I do wonder how Mayfield would be doing with Cooper and Moore to throw to and this defense. Mayfield was throwing to Jarvis Landry, Rashard Higgins, and Donovan Peoples-Jones.

Mayfield is certainly not perfect but he has a 93.7 QB rating this year and only one more INT than Watson in 3 more games played.

Oh look another Deshaun Watson post.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

of all time?

Just wait. There are plenty of inept owners with more money than football acumen.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The only way its not the worst of all time is if he wins a superbowl

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

cleveland deserves every last penny of that contract.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I think it's borderline impossible to argue that there's a contract worse than it, in league history, through the first two years.

Because of the guarantees, he'll see out the contract and potentially have a chance to make it better, but through two years - yeah it's by far the worst.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

And the 2nd worse isn't even in the ballpark. Haynesworth, D Jones, Wilson, Jamarcus etc don't even compare.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Is this a daily post now?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The thing is... even if the Browns make it to the playoffs and win a game, the contract would STILL be the worst in NFL history. Like they potentially went from winning their first playoff game in like 30 years with Baker to winning another playoff game with Watson for an extra $250 million. Only thing that could justify this contract is a Super Bowl berth, which is clearly not happening.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Will go?

It was the worst contract the day it was written.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Well the rookie pay scale is now in effect thanks to Jamarcus Russell.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

this thread is gonna keep getting asked every week and im all for it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

without a doubt

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I will always think less of my Falcons for even considering bringing him to Atlanta. I would rather lose than win with a loser.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Not just the contract but the trade as well.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It was the worst trade and contract even if Watson wasn’t accused of sexual assault by 30 separate women.

There are very few players who would warrant 3 first round picks and a fully guaranteed contract— Watson was never one of them. I’d offer that for Mahomes and I think that’s it.

But, once you add the sexual assault allegations, the trade and contract went from “incredibly stupid” to “holy shit what the fuck are you doing” stupid.

It was the moment it was signed.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yes. And while it continues to get worse, this isn’t news. There’s a post about it every week

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

He and Jimbo Fisher just swimming through pools filled with cash.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Brock Osweilers' contract comes to mind. Bot as lucrative as Watsons, but Osweiler didn't have nearly the potential Watcon had.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Meh, next year browns fans will still be claiming he's just rusty at this exact point in the season. At which point he either gets hurt again or benched or hopefully just booted from league bc he's garbage at more than just football.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Albert Haynesworth still takes the cake to me. As fucked as the whole situation is, the Browns thought they were getting a franchise QB. It blew up in their face and I think most of us are enjoying that, but it still made SOME sense. Albert got a bag from Washington even though he was already proving more trouble than he was worth. His last year in Tennessee he was an All Pro.. And they still let him walk. Washington ignored that and I'm pretty sure they made him the highest paid DT ever at the time.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Considering his background before coming to Cleveland, how bad the trade was followed up by a contract that gave him the most money ever to an NFL player, and now include the injuries along with what was really just decent QB play that the team could have had from many other QBs at 1/4 the cost; it has to be considered the worst contract and maybe even trade the NFL has seen.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Sam Bradford may be worse

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

bro was 5-1 until he got hurt. so uhh I'm gonna go with no lol

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The only way it isn’t is if Watson wins them the Super Bowl. Otherwise it is the worst contract by far and a reason no one else is offering even better players comparable contracts

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Idk how the city of Cleveland hasn’t booted this shit franchise out yet. What an embarrassment.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The only way Watson and the Browns can turn this into anything but the worst contract of all time is if they win the Superbowl and he plays a significant part in getting them there. Their defense is looking incredible right now. Given the cap space Watson takes up and the picks they traded to Houston to get him, that team could very well be Superbowl favorites right now if they'd spent all those resources at other positions and either kept Mayfield or brought in a significantly cheaper game manager type QB.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Watson is the worst NFL recent contract and Masoli would be the CFL version

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The Browns parted with three first round picks, one third round pick and two fourth round picks. They still owe Watson $138 million He played 12 games in his first two seasons.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

11 games in 3 seasons, pretty damn bad.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Hey it's a good thing someone started this thread! No one has ever thought of this topic before!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I call dibs on asking this same question tomorrow!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

always has been

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I think so unless something even crazier happens in the future. I really don't know what they were smoking

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yep seems like a safe bet, and let’s not forget the haul of picks they gave up for the honor of giving a rapist that contract.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Nope. r/NFL loves to hate on Watson and will post every day about him to get free internet points. You are all so dramatic. You can't predict injury. It's just unlucky. His play was starting to get back to normal. He's had valid excuses for some of his bad play. Rust is a real fucking excuse. While it's super frustrating, it's not the end of the world. Our window is still open, he's shown he can play at a high level still. He's shown he can last game winning drives (something Baker never could do).

Berry is also very good at managing the cap space. We have 33mil in cap this year that's gonna roll over.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Deshaun Watson getting the contract he did solidified a thought in my head. These owners aren't smarter than me, they just had wealthier dads.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

This cuts so many ways because I think it ruins the potential for another player to make a similar request going forward. A cautionary tale, if you will.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Part of me wants to say it depends if they win the big game or not. If their D plus whatever they get from watson gives them a SB next year, it'll still be bad but because they got a SB out of it, it'll be worth. If not, yes it's pretty bad.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

that boy is getting everything he deserves.. I use to think the universe stuff was BS but I’m a believer now..

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I can't believe nobody has brought this up here before until right now

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I don't think there's any doubt about that.

From a pure numbers and production standpoint it's probably the worst in history without even factoring in all the accusations against him and everything Cleveland gave up to bring him in. The latter part just takes it to a whole new level of awful.

I doubt a sports contract will ever top his in terms of awfulness. The stars truly aligned for it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I could have told you that before he ever took a snap. Getting paid more than NFL elites, they had to redo Patrick Mahomes contract bc this scrub was getting paid more. That’s why owners refused to pay beyond that in the offseason. Raising that ceiling would be ridiculous

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Fully guaranteed quarter billion dollars to a serial rapist, let me get back to you on that one.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Kyler Murray has that distinction

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Worst,, and dumbest.

So far....
