Yeah I figure no need to discriminate at this point, anyone in the field of administering any IT systems is welcome here. If Lemmy really takes off and sometime down the road there seems a need for it we might establish rules for what's appropriate to post here vs. other tech subs, but I don't see the need for that now.

Well yeah, Lemmy is to Reddit what Mastodon is to Twitter. Never cared for Twitter pre or post-Elon.

Feel free to use this space for networking related posts as well. Not all of us have the fortune of being able to wear a single hat, and I know I'm just as interested in networking news & discussion as anything else in the IT space.

If you have interesting read-worthy news articles, I'd encourage you to post them. I've been pursuing some Linux news sites but don't know what's of interest to everyone. Also, Lemmy is a community and I don't intend to be a one-man show. 😁

Yep, you've made it to Lemmy. The lemmy.ml server, specifically.

I started playing Firmament a bit before I saw this news yesterday. I figured the mysteriousness would unfold bit by bit as the game progressed as we're used to with Cyan games, but now it seems it might just be a hodge-podge mess of AI written material. Oh well, the puzzles have been fun and engaging and I'll probably keep playing.

Well it can be a good idea... if you're looking to move on to those other options I mentioned (specialize, management, or goat farm). If you want to stay in the sysadmin space, I guess I'd still recommend automating, but with caution.

I think I remember that one, but did it reach blackout phase? I thought there was just much general negativity about it until reddit reversed course. That one didn't necessarily make them money I don't think, they just intended to "vanilla-ize" the site.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 years ago

Yeah, my hope is that reddit is about to enter the "find out" phase. If they only stick to a 2 day blackout however (or snub it like the /r/sysadmin mods), things are going to get right back to status quo real quick unfortunately.

What do we think? Is IDG full of it? Is the industry trending toward DevOps? I suppose there's always the other options - hyper-specialize in a given technology, or move on to management. Or go start a goat farm or something.

I know this isn't heavy on the AI tech talk, but figured it was relevant. Applications of AI will definitely shape how the public accepts it.

Looks like a swing and a miss for Cyan on this application. I've started playing the game and figured that the lore would unfold well in drips throughout, but it sounds like it's kind of hodge-podged. I know I've had enough fun with the puzzles so far to keep going though.

Transgender minors and some adults in Missouri will soon be banned from accessing puberty blockers, hormones, and gender-affirming surgeries under a bill signed Wednesday by the state’s Republican governor.

Beginning Aug. 28, Missouri healthcare providers won’t be able to prescribe those gender-affirming treatments for teens and children. Most adults will still have access to transgender health care under the law, but Medicaid won’t cover it.

While Microsoft has indicated these outages are a mess of its own making, hacktivist group Anonymous Sudan has claimed responsibility for the downtime, and said it did the deed as retaliation for the US government interfering with the internal affairs of the civil war-ravaged African nation.

The potentially-pro-Russian crew stated its claim on its Telegram channel, with messages coinciding with the timing of the first outage. Afterward, the group reportedly said it would again attack Microsoft's services because the company said the problem was technical rather than a cyberattack.

I ~~setup~~ (took over and spruced up, to be precise) this community specifically because of the time I've spent over the years browsing and relying on reddit.com/r/sysadmin for sources of information on tips/tricks, security exploits & patches, outages, and yes even the ranting about how our jobs all suck. (I like mine, for what it's worth.)

Come on down, ask questions, post what the sysadmin community needs to know about, or head in to get either sympathy or chastisement about why you haven't left your job yet. 🤣

Midwest.social is "a Lemmy server for, but not limited to, leftists in the Midwest USA" according to the person running it. Head on over and join the conversation!

I've been unintentionally neglecting the MO and STL communities here on Lemmy.ml, but intend to fix that moving forward and will try to post things between both servers.

I can't say that I share her optimism, but I suppose it's always good to maintain hope that people here in MO will stop voting against their own interests.

Microsoft kicked off its Build developer conference yesterday, where it unveiled several new features for enterprise customers. The company also announced a preview of Windows 365 Boot, which lets users log directly into their Cloud PCs at startup instead of the local install of Windows 11.

Windows 365 Boot is designed for Windows devices that are shared between multiple people (such as frontline workers and temporary employees). The feature eliminates the need for IT admins to configure Windows PCs for individual users.

“When you power on your device, Windows 365 Boot will take you to your Windows 11 login experience. After login, you will be directly connected to your Windows 365 Cloud PC with no additional steps. This is a great solution for shared devices, where logging in with a unique user identity can take you to your own personal and secure Cloud PC,” Microsoft explained.

I created duplicate accounts (same username as this one), one here on lemmy.ml and another of the same account on midwest.social. This was before I understood how Lemmy works. Now I've deleted the account on midwest.social and want to login there with my federated account from lemmy.ml. However when I try to login it just sits and spins.

Will I be able to login to the other Lemmy server with this account? Do I just need to give the other server some time before it wipes out the account completely?

I have verified that the other server is federated with lemmy.ml:

Just a recommendation to the mod(s) here, you may want to set the display name for the community to simply "Sysadmin".

While it's a funny true-ism, when searching Lemmy communities for "sysadmin" it's easy to miss "It's always dns" in the results. Make the sidebar just read "It's always dns" instead.

Stop on by, post what's on your mind. What's happening in our state? Want to be a moderator? Let me know!

I figured that this would be as good as any for my first post on Lemmy - showing off the entire Discworld Collector's Library series that I managed to purchase from BookDepository.com before Amazon shut it down. Was able to pickup the whole series for around $500 USD. So glad I was able to get these and never figured I would own the complete set of these nice hardback editions.
