It would be sloppy or negligent. I know they responded and they actually resolved the issue, but they responded late and they don't seem to actually care. Otherwise they would have indicated that the user broke the rules, not just that the userbase wanted them gone. It also implies that they don't see what is wrong with Ashton's hateful posts promoting transphobia and alt-right Nazism, which is concerning just to say the least.

I know that people are going to excuse them for this, on the basis of being a "free service", which is kind of meaningless because paid services these days are just as bad or worse. So not a good excuse to dissipate criticism. No criticism of their practices is absolutely valid and warranted. Especially because it is a Fediverse service. Therefore even if you don't use it, it is still your problem that they don't moderate and don't care due to federation.

Just to be clear I'm an SDF member and I have been with them for a few years, and I think their intentions are noble, but I also think they tend to not put as much care and effort as they should into some of their services. The fact that it was as difficult as it was to get them to update from a version with broken federation shows that. They need to bring in more active admins, write a list of rules, and maybe most importantly. Come up with a way to keep spammers at bay. I suggested that they require people be Validated SDF members to join the Lemmy as that would basically eliminate all spam or trolling while still allowing it to be accessible for all the people who really want it.

Nope, I looked on lemmy.sdf.org and it does not appear they have. Nazi shit is still there. So since it's been a day without any response I think it's time we started defederating from lemmy.sdf.org at least until we get updates on the situation. After all this idiot could have more sockpupets there we don't know about.

You also have no control over whether reports federate out to other admins, Carcosa showed that with their bad faith accusations that I was replying to them via reports in [email protected] when I was actually reporting them for being an ass and violating the community's and instance rules. On Mastodon I would've simply unticked the Forward report to Hexbear option, but Lemmy doesn't let you do that, it by default pulls out all the stops to let everyone know it's being reported, with no discretion whatsoever. I'm kinda surprised they don't just make them publicly visible to everyone *sarcasm*.

Glad I could help.

Yeah it definitely is. They should be way more attentive when it comes to moderation, as well as maintenance of their services. I still remember having to beg them to update from 0.19.2 to 0.19.3 because the instance was broken and not federating (couldn't even log in) it was so difficult to get them to do that. They did do it but it shouldn't have been anywhere near that hard.

I didn't think to reach out to them since they're a smaller instance, they likely don't even see this whole thing happening. This is more an issue for the bigger admins since they're the ones who will ultimately stop the spread. So I didn't really want to bother them with something that they probably can't even see.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago

Nope, as far as I can tell that's not a thing on any instance. You can either have it open or limited to Admins. Reddit has the feature fully open by default. I guess the idea is to encourage people to create the spaces they need/want on demand without fuss.

Ok that's good to know. I sure hope they do.

Most instances with a larger userbase really need to have a 24 hour team, "mods are asleep" should never happen on a server with a large userbase. The disruptions that can cause in cases like this are unacceptable.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

Oh, that's good. I apologize for coming off as harsh in that case. I remembered a situation where someone was arguing with me saying that it would be bad or useless since community mods need to run their own communities and shouldn't be bypassed. Glad to see its being worked on.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh I see, sorry I didn't check sooner. I'll try to check the modlog next time (hopefully there isn't a next time).

Me neither. If the mods don't respond to or address this issue by tomorrow I will begin advocating defederation from lemmy.sdf.org because if they aren't willing or able to moderate hate speech, then they aren't a safe instance to be on or be around.

Reported less than five of this dipshit's posts and he ended up banning me from all of his communities. Doesn't really surprise me. I've known that reports on Lemmy are faulty and Admin only reports, or more control of who receives them has been suggested but Lemmy's devs never listen.

My advice is to just send messages directly to your Admins as well as his admins, then he can't intercept them.

Really thought the old one was much cooler, does anyone else agree?

I mean it is what it is ultimately but I always thought the older one looked much cooler. While the new one looks very flat and plain.

What do you guys think though?

Recently noticed a resurfacing of the image bug that happened back when 0.19.6 was released where random posts with image links wouldn't be detected as the images they are.

I've noticed it happening for several posts on the instance, here's a few:

I'm making this post here though and not in the Github issue since it seems to be affecting only this current instance. I checked and it doesn't seem like lemmy.ml is affected at all. So in all likelihood it's probably limited to dbzer0. If anyone else notices this elsewhere pleas feel free to chime in and provide post links (dbzer0 copy, the origins don't help us since this is a dbzer0 issue).

This behavior is very concerning, especially since it's not a one-off, their other replies on that account aren't much better.

Hey there everyone, I just wanted to make a post leting you guys know about a new community dedicated to the discussion and sharing of Kodi addons. Mostly streaming addons but any other addons are also welcome

If you have an interest in Kodi addons, or piracy on Kodi in general I recommend subscribing to that community, link to make it slightly easier [email protected], and if you have anything about Kodi addons you want to ask, or any addons in particular you'd like to share I encourage you to post there.

Recently I decided to create a community for Kodi addons since there isn't an equivalent to the Reddit version. This community is for discussion and sharing of any Kodi addons but it's mostly about streaming addons. If you have an interest in Kodi addons, or piracy on Kodi in general I recommend subscribing to the linked community, and if you have anything about Kodi addons you want to ask, or any addons in particular you'd like to share I encourage you to post there.

In light of recent events regarding RealDebrid we do not recommend people use addons powered by RealDebrid for their Kodi library, and we strongly do not recommend that people pay for RealDebrid service.

You may still promote these addons in the community, there is no ban on promotion of usage of these addons. They are simply not recommended as they likely will not last or remain functional for very long.

What is forbidden is encouraging others to pay for RealDebrid without making this fact clear to people, as many people may not have heard the news and would waste their money on something that may not work for the next few months.

It should be noted that snarkiness or rude comments towards users who wish to not pay for RD due to this or any other concerns are considered uncivil behavior and violate rule 1 of the community rules.

I recently decided to set up an Addons4Kodi community as an alternative to the subreddit and also an alternative to the version on lemmy.ml. It's not very active at all yet but hopefully that can change as more people become aware of it.
