Does anyone have current recommendations for an alternative to nextcloud file syncing/sharing?
I use it only for the below:
- synchronize some files/folders between some of my devices
- share files/folders with friends who don't have an account; either with no password/account, or a password set at time of sharing
- temporary/timed sharing so it is eventually no longer shared is nice, but not required
- use its webui like dropbox to upload files to my server from random machines (or download them)
And for that, nextcloud seems to be overkill.
I don't see a lot of love here for the ESPP, so I'll add my perspective. If your company is not prone to large fluctuations, then a quicksale with 15% discount is usually a good investment (if locking your money up for 6 months isn't a problem).
Even without the min of start/end, it's giving you a very good shot at 15% benefit for an average investment of ~3 months (your initial contributions are held for 6 months, but your most recent st ourchase for weeks). I don't know of any investment that can fairly confidently return near 15% in 3 months.
So long as you are confident in your stock, my strategy is:
- contribute to the espp
- quicksale
- withdraw the money (set aside some for taxes if necessary) and invest it into index (assuming all bills/debts are paid off)
Yes, it is taxed as short term gain this way, but your salary/other stock incentives/insurance are likely already tied to your employer, and holding it a year is riskier than quicksale
I text my buddy, and say "hey do you wanna watch xyz, when you're done with work?". We hop on discord to chat and watch it. An hour or two timezone is not an issue, and for someone 'local' I'm probably not driving half an hour to their house after work. I do prefer watching together in-person, but thats not always as convenient.
Probably around 40% of my watching is via syncplay on Jellyfin, as I like watching with buddies.
Sans jellyfin you have to find a way for both of you to access the same file/stream and manually sync across snack/bathroom breaks or use the external and separate syncplay app.
I do like the external syncplay app but if I'm going to have to get the file to them anyways, why not just stream it synced? In my mind this is a really convenient feature.
It is not perfect, in my experience;
- on rare occasions, it gets 'stuck' and won't sync correctly, so one will play but noth the other, pausing one unpauses the other, etc. Usually rebooting helps, but if not, I just manually sync
- there was 1 occassion which made no sense. I played a movie with a friend, we were watching together, but they were ahead of me by a whole ~15 minutes by the end of the film. Neither of us felt it was fast/slow or skipping anything.
- I haven't had luck using syncplay on my TV. The feature exists but it doesn't actually work.
But these are rare, minor gripes IMO. I'm glad Jellyfin has this feature.
Our "show of strength" and willpower is not buying something on amazon for 1 day? And it's easily confirmed online, that its a 1 day stunt?
It wreaks of "I'm doing my part", or the countless internet outcries against something that goes away the next day. People will just spike buy the days before or after.
At a minimum it should be a plan for a week or two or four, where all you buy is the essentials (ie. food from the grocery or local farms ideally, pay your rent).
- cancel your subscriptions
- don't eat out
- buy only local food as much as possible
- don't buy shit, use what you've got, freecycle, etc.
- plant a victory garden
That said, what we've got is in motion, so join others doing the minimum on the 28th, and then just keep on.
I think to really have impact though, a national strike is necessary, but difficult with folks living paycheck to paycheck. When advertiser expenses consistently result in 0 value clicks, when businesses have to shutter their doors, when food is going bad on the shelves because folks are willing to grow their own or buy local.
Semi-related, but several years ago I had a good experience getting my audiobooks from audible with https://github.com/rmcrackan/Libation
