Mostly the "reasons" just boil down to etymology. We spell things the way the languages we stole them from spelled them.

I first read this and thought you were saying the software was almost certainly made worse and got all indignant then parsed it a second time and relaxed

It's like how so many people in America did by hitting bullets with their squishy bodies.
