@QuinceDaPence

Using https://hotaudiofiction.social/u/@[email protected] (when logged into said instance) throws a 404 for me.

HOWEVER... using https://kbin.social/u/@[email protected] when I'm logged into that instance does not.

Which is good news. I mean, bad news that we have a misconfig or something not setup correctly (yet), but good that it works! Off to figure out why not. And, hopefully, figure out what sort of timeline we have here on /kbin!

Let's say a user wants to join a dedicated /kbin instance for audio fiction. There are a variety of magazines on that instance, by genre, title, new releases, etc. It's a nifty theoretical instance. ๐Ÿ˜‰

But this user wants to do more than just interact with the magazines and people on that instance. They want to use their account on this /kbin instance to follow accounts not on that server. So maybe @[email protected] because they are quite interested in Astronomy, @[email protected] because they like funny birds talking shit, and @[email protected] because they are interested in learning more about /kbin. Again, they want to follow all three of those accounts with the account they made on this not-so-mythical audio fiction-centetric /kbin server.

Can they? How do they search for, find, and follow those accounts because those accounts are not (yet, at least) "connected" to the unnamed (it's hotaudiofiction.social) /kbin instance?

And if they can, how would they see the posts from those un-connected accounts? Like, where is the "timeline" view in /kbin?

I started this magazine to test of the capabilities of /kbin, and to gauge the general interest amongst citizens of the Fediverse to discuss audio fiction. While the jury is still out on the latter, the former was a rousing success.

So much that I've spun up a dedicated /kbin instance exclusively for Audio Fiction topics. It's called Hot Audio Fiction, and I'm confident it'll one day live up to its hashtag: #HotAF. ๐Ÿ˜…

We just launched today with a small number of magazines. Clearly, I want that to grow, so I'm inviting you, the 210 people who've subscribed to this single "test" magazine to migrate to or make an account on https://hotaudiofiction.social and jump in.

Create your own magazines if that sounds like fun! That's what'll help keep the community healthy and fed.

And reach out to me with any challenges and/or concerns. I'm learning as I go, but have a couple of friends with solid tech pedigrees and experience maintaining fediverse instances to help out in all the places where I'm little to no help.

#HotAF is ready for you! (I think!)

Also, I'll likely spin this magazine down in the coming weeks/months as we shift folks over there.

Cheers!

E.

I read in @Podnews about Bradley Cooper's movie production companyโ€”Lea Picturesโ€”teaming up with iHeart for a slate of new podcasts. Quoting from the press release:

โ€œOur shows will feature real people telling real stories, and we knew iHeart was the perfect partner to reach as many people as possible. I look forward to dreaming up more extraordinary stories together.โ€

You, too, likely see the disconnect between the first sentence and the last sentence. Regardless, their efforts do seemโ€”for now, at leastโ€”to be focused on creating new "talk" shows or docuseries. Which is fine.

But why not put their efforts into "dreaming up more extraordinary stories" and making those into podcast fiction? (Spoiler: it's money)

Thoughts?

It's the end of the month, which means it's time to once again make a cry for help in reaching the fine folks behind these fiction podcasts that started releasing episodes in May 2023:

  • **_Conquest Of The Stars_** by Ruark Ruark - Hosted on Acast

  • **_A Quaint English Murder_** by - Hosted on Acast

Each of them is producing episodes, and you can follow their show, but none of them have a publicly available contract method. Their hosting providers have, like many, removed the one RSS field that used to contain an email address, so I'm stuck with making a public pleaโ€”againโ€”to find the creators so I can get their shows listed in a future issue of The End, my weekly newsletter that shines a light back on audio fiction shows after they've reached the finale of a season or the conclusion of the series.

And a pro-tip to all fiction podcasters, current and future: make sure you have contact info available for your show. At a bare minimum, put an email address (like [email protected]) in your show's description.

Thatโ€™s it from The End for this week. See you next Friday!

I'm always on the lookout for fantastic audio fiction shows that wrapped a season or the whole series in the Before Times. Lots of attention is cast on new shows, but there are some golden gems from way back when that more people need to know about.

Got a favorite? Perhaps one you worked on? Tell me about it! I'd love to share it with the world in The End, the weekly newsletter that shines a light back on audio fiction shows after they've reached the finale of a season or the conclusion of the series.

A little birdie told me that the GFL might have its own dedicated feed with all the stories starting with this year's NFL season. ๐Ÿ˜„

I do, indeed. Scott is good people, with a huge repository of fiction podcasts from all the way back in 2005. https://scottsigler.com is a good spot to start, or just search his name in any podcast app for lots of story to choose from!

@Fringetheory999 To be honest, I'm torn on using LLM-powered (I refuse to use the moniker "AI," for it is neither) for fiction creation. I absolutely see the benefits to a creator who, for whatever reason, is incapable of doing the narration (as an example.) I don't have an issue with LLM helping someone get unstuck at some point during the creative process.

But experience has made me leery. And there are some questionable ethics around how these models have been trained. And then there's the whole "won't someone think of the creatives" replacement stuff that makes me worry.

Now, having said all of that, I'm very open to my opinions being swayed over time, so don't let my curmudgeonliness stop you from experimenting! ๐Ÿ˜…
