Are badges currently functional? If so, how do they work/what is the purpose? in c/[email protected]

I also have this thread opened in a new tab, just in case someone comes back with an answer. I thought they were flairs, but when I tried to add various "badges", nothing happened. I'm just going to guess that this is an upcoming feature with a placeholder.
