Canada has always been refuge / safe haven for America's downtrodden, starting with African victims of their transatlantic slave trade.
The Fugitive Slave Acts, passed by Congress in 1793 and 1850, mandated the capture and return of escaped enslaved people to their owners, even in free states. The 1850 law was particularly harsh, denying accused fugitives the right to testify or have jury trials. Federal marshals faced $1,000 fines for non-enforcement, while anyone helping escapees faced six months imprisonment and fines. The law prompted fierce Northern opposition and drove approximately 15,000 free Blacks to flee to Canada.
Low labor costs and centralization but the how matters less than the if and when (will they supercede the US) in this scenario.
EVs in the next 10 years. They've made massive investments dating back over a decade while the US can be described as aimlessly meandering like a drunk on the side of a freeway at best.
They're far too addicted to the algorithmic brain rot to switch of their free will.
I'm sure Trump will do that. That's why he was elected right?
Let's see if one of greatest American businessmen of all time (/s) can protect his citizens from the trade war he started.
America is the most pro litigation country in the world. This won't fly anywhere else.
Canada should make its own version of Netflix, Amazon and Uber and watch American companies cry while they try to sue in Canadian courts and flounder.
Every country should do this. There's no reason for a cut to go to Silicon Valley when you buy Canadian food from a Canadian restaurant delivered by a Canadian driver. Fuck em.
Netflix should not be making ad revenue when people around the world binge watch Kim's Convenience (a Canadian production).
It's about time we cut the US media mafia out. They need to see that the walled garden they've created around their profits is not impenetrable.
He's trying to incentivize domestic manufacturing by disincentivizing foreign imports.
The problem is he hasn't promised any meaningful investment in domestic manufacturing except for a massive half a trillion dollar investment in AI.
For example, all shoes are made in foreign countries where labor costs are lower. The machinery to make shoes locally is scant if nonexistant. There were no investments made to offset this.
Nike and Adidas have said prices may go up by up to 100%. You have to inventivize these companies to make product locally otherwise they're going to find the cheapest option which is either trafficking it through a non tariffed country or passing the cost on to the consumer. They have a duty to their shareholders (the great American ethos) after all.
Source? Does this include energy / oil or only consumer goods?
