Ok, Now my entire ~.emacs file is:

(set-face-foreground 'mode-line "white") (set-face-background 'mode-line "blue") (set-face-foreground 'minibuffer-prompt "cyan")

I can't get it to accept the 'attribute' part.

set-face-foreground 'default "white" changed the text in the edit area to white, but had no effect on the text described above.

Well it either has to be 3.5" drive then Dual 5.25" drive or the other way around as both the Apple IIC+ and the Floppy Emu only have one drive connector.

Thanks @[email protected] I responded before but It seems to take time - hope you see this one.

Don't give them any ideas...

It did add some superlatives, almost as though it had an ego.

Tell me more. Why?

However, in the art arena AI is frustrating when you need a very specific image and not just a 'a tree a dog a bird and a farmhouse' AI art is getting better with text in the image but still makes some mistakes there. AI does poorly when you try to use it as a search engine : "What movie had a ball shaped robot" might bring back any answer. Warning though - AI is getting better at hands and spurious limbs.

What is AI good for - Images that are suitable for screen backgrounds, Creative text work - I had chatgpt work with me on a procedure to un-mothball a starship, it suggested details I did not think of. I had chatgpt also read and suggest re-wording and correction on text for documentation. I fed it a chapter at a time and proofread the output carefully to mitigate hallucination.

Here is the text above after a chatgpt re-write:

AI excels at creating stunning screen backgrounds and tackling creative text work. For example, I worked with ChatGPT to craft a procedure for un-mothballing a starship, and it offered valuable details I hadn’t considered. It’s also a fantastic tool for refining documentation—I had it review and reword chapters, carefully proofreading to ensure accuracy. The results were efficient, insightful, and elevated the final product.

Oh, also this is not an industrial setting with a computer controlling some heavy equipment. This is a nostalgia lab. MSDOS was the thing when I was around 22 or so.

I am still figuring out DOS networking.
Update - The on-board Ethernet is a Realtec of some sort

Anyone remember the castaway? The adventures of a guy on a one-tree desert island.

[Answered] IP Quail gives me my ipv6 address, can I tell it to duck.dns (a dynamic DNS provider)

I have worked on a file in Directory A. There is a file with the same name in directory B which is an older version of that same file. I rsync everything from B to A.

What happens to my work in the file in directory A?

What is everyone running their FreeDOS on?

Ok, right now I am running FreeDOS under DosBox on my production laptop, but it might be nice to have a small machine, preferably a desktop, that will still boot in Legacy Mode.

Is there a machine I can buy new that I might be able to outfit with a 5.25 and 3.5 floppy drive? That can boot Legacy Mode? Extra points if it can also boot Legacy mode from a USB stick or Ventoy external drive!

Btw cost is an important consideration.

[Solved by going to X11]

I am working with my Debian 12 system and suddenly the whole screen goes blank and comes right back. I am not sure what triggers it, it seems to happen when I am exiting a program, I think when It comes back any program I had running is gone now. This is very intermittent and does not happen very often.

Here as a start have a neofetch:

OS: Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) x86_64

Host: VivoBook_ASUSLaptop S5402ZA_S5402ZA 1.0

Kernel: 6.1.0-11-amd64

Uptime: 12 hours, 2 mins

Packages: 2361 (dpkg)

Shell: bash 5.2.15

Resolution: 2880x1800

DE: Plasma 5.27.5

WM: kwin

WM Theme: plastik

Theme: [Plasma], Breeze [GTK2/3]

Icons: [Plasma], breeze-dark [GTK2/3]

Terminal: konsole

Terminal Font: Hack 19

CPU: 12th Gen Intel i7-12700H (20) @ 4.600GHz

GPU: Intel Alder Lake-P Memory: 3406MiB / 11577MiB

I did journalctl -b - there is a crazy amount of detail in there.

If there is anything specific I can do, please let me know - I am more than a noob, but a lot of the time I only know just enough to be dangerous.

Thanks!

What must I do to unjam things?

I have tried many suggestions from various websites but they don't work because it looks like there is some sort of circular dependency going on here.

Debian 12. HP Laserjet Professional P1606dn

If it prints at all, it prints the top inch of the test page or just random binary. I have tried the recommended driver, the driverless driver, the Generic PCL 4/5 driver, the Generic PCL 6 driver. And probably others I am not remembering.

I am trying to print over Ethernet, but I am about to drag the printer over near my desk and print via USB.

Fortunately, I don't have actual critical printing to do right now and I am only setting up a printer after installing Debian 12. BTW this means it is a fresh install of Debian 12 too.

I have been helpdesk support at a data center. I would not consider myself a dummy, but this is getting ridiculous. A task that should have taken all of 10 minutes has taken over 2 hours so far.

How are we ever going to get "The Year of Linux on the Desktop" if simple printing is and continues to be such a pain?

Plasma 5.27.4 Icons are too far apart in icons only task manager. The only way to fix this seems to be to jam extra spacers into the panel.

A dropbox link to SHELL - This is a command line shell that provides the following:

  • point and activate all kinds of files
  • Issue any command that you could type on the command line by just typing the command
  • Select many files for operations such as copy, move, delete, print, anything you could do with one file from the command line.

Say I am looking for fellows who use FreeDOS. I open the "Comunities" tab(?) at the top of the page, right next to "Lemmy.one" and search - But these are only the communities that Lemmy.one knows about, right?

Thanks, everyone - I am gonna call this one solved.

I have a laptop and a desktop-based-server on a 192.168.1.x segment on my network. I want to setup Tailscale between them.

Will it be bad if Tailscale connects while my laptop is local, on 192.168.1.x network?

Can I make it automatically connect via Tailscale when away and via the local network when home?

How can I best test the Tailscale network while I am at home?

So, I just start firefox on a virtual desktop by itself. Is there a way to move it from that virtual desktop to another?

Other programs have a gadget that puts them on all the virtual desktops at once. click that gadget go to the desktop you want the program on, and click the gadget in that window to collapse the app to that one virtual desktop.

I have some drives of various sizes, 1TB, 2TB etc. I am currently working with a 2 TB drive. I place it in a powered external USB-3 drive enclosure. I can see it in lsblk as the correct size (as SDA) , but the disk manager does not see /dev/sda, and fdisk only wants to let me create a 5 GB partition.

If I dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=400K status=progress writes 5 GB and claims my 2 TB drive (In this case) is full.

Is there a way to reclaim this drive? Any information on the drive is unimportant.
