My dedicated machine ignores disk swap on 2 of the 3 USB drives I have. The third one seems to be ok though.

This is The Way.

FreeDOS is running on a dedicated i5 desktop with 8gb ram. I wanted to get a period correct desktop machine to run MSDOS 6.22 but all the "Electronic Surplus" places have all dried up. So I built the least powered machine I could (Well I could have used an i3, but the difference in price was only $10.00. I only put in 1 of the smallest memory sticks they had ...)

I have a dos running in DOSBOX, but it's not the same as real hardware, and it's not easy to use a usb floppy drive with it. With my dedicated machine I can even boot from floppy if I want/need to.

RIP Weird Stuff, Halted Specialties, The one that used to be near the Oakland Airport and others I remember but don't remember their names. Not to mention the internet famous one in Texas - Computer Reset. Oh, now I am sad.

My production laptop is Debian, as is my server so I guess that would be the way to go then.

I had the lens pointed up. It was sitting on the camera-end cap. I was not holding the zoom ring for this test. It held the zoom for the test and remained fully extended.

A Bard, an advanced story teller, One who draws pictures of things that never were (people with 3 arms for example), Lore from Star Trek. Don't give it power to do anything on its own, always monitor it.

In case it matters to the issue the lens marking reads: "Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-135 mm 1:3.5 - 5.6 IS"

I just tried this - Lens is off the camera (and has a lens cover for both ends) sitting looking straight up. I turn zoom ring until the lens is fully extended. I wait a bit then I check for zoom movement and found that the lens was still fully extended.

I don't know if this is a valid test because sitting on a table - the lens is not getting any electricity from the camera body.

I can't say for sure, but I think I had my hand on the zoom ring. The moon will still be full enough tonight perhaps I will try again. I looked up "Focus Breathing" and I am not sure what it is really talking about.

I guess we will see how that works for me? Thanks for the hint Redd : ^ )

A lot - a moon mostly filling the frame to a moon in 1/9 of the frame

https://gitlab.com/waspentalive/labelbasic

Label Basic is to be a simple basic interpreter that uses labels instead of line numbers. I have a design document in the project at GitLab. I have some C coding experience but I am really weak in pointers. All of my experience is small C programs for my own curiosity, I have published very little, see the other items in my GitLab.

I have a stack of SATA hard drives that I need to erase.

I have a USB drive dock, a box that a drive can be set into that connects to my computer via USB-3.

I am using DD to write zeros to the raw device, in this case, /dev/sdf.

No matter the actual size of the drive dd stops at about 3 to 7 gb. These are 300 gb to 3 TB drives.

I am not mounting the drives, but I do ensure they are visible to the system with lsblk. To change drives I turn off the dock. The drive then disappears from lsblk. When I insert a different drive and turn the dock back on again /dev/sdf re-appears.

Are all my drives bad? If they are I will need to have them "professionally" destroyed at about $25 a drive.

All I want is: A Klien Bottle on a rough wood table with a fireplace in the background. A fire in the fireplace. Photorealistic.

Dall-e keeps coming up with other bottles - mostly wine bottles.

I am zeroing out some old drive - some may not have secure erase. If I issue the command:

hpparm --security-erase-enhanced

Against a drive that does not have this feature, will it error? Man does not tell me.

[[[ Solved - Using FreeTube for now ]]]

It seems youtube is breaking into the middle of long-form video much more often. And most of the ads are for snake oil - Fear mongering "Tinnitus will KILL your brain in three years" baloney.

Is there a Fediverse equivalent to YouTube? Can the Fediverse be applied to this? Will it solve the above complaint?

I have been to Odysee but with very few exceptions none of the content I want is there (They have Veritasium, and minute Physics, but not Vsause, Technology Connections, or Stand Up Maths)

I tried it once a long time ago. Does anyone here currently use it? What do you like about it? What do you hate?

Tiny is a small integer RPN based language created by User:Ron.hudson. It is a console/character type interpretive programming language, in which all statements are either assignments or those that print quoted strings.

#Solved

Our microwave has just begun to show a failure mode. With no settings on the timer/modes when we close the door we hear a 60-cycle hum.

We put a coffee cup with water in and closed the door but did not push any button and noted the hum. The water got warm, for the exposure of 20 to 30 seconds, the water got the expected level of warmth we think.

Is there any danger if we leave the door open? (No hum with the door open)

Could the Magnatron be running at a higher output than it is supposed to when the door is closed but the microwave is not under the control of its built-in circuitry?

Of course, there is no danger of the microwave doing anything other than heating stuff (No mad science going on)? We know that microwave ovens work by making the water molecules vibrate faster.

Why are some of my subscriptions pending after 3 or 4 days? Has lemmy.ml somehow fallen out of favor?

Hi, I am WasPentalive and I use C to create small programs to explore randomness and other interesting subjects. For example, I had heard that the chances of winning the CA lottery was the same as flipping a coin Heads or Tails 25 times in a row. I wrote a C program to flip coins until that streak was accomplished.
