Hi, I have been learning android app development for years. This is my first open source project. It is an online dictionary app using as API source and can cache data for online use. It is under MIT license. I developed this app for my portfolio and it is completely FREE. I am also open to app ideas so I can grow my portfolio.

I've recently switched to a more privacy-friendly environment, getting rid of most proprietary apps and looking for their FOSS alternatives. While I did find adequate replacements for the most of the apps, are were a few that I couldn't solve on my own. I'd really appreciate your help. ❤️

Due to changes in our community's rules and respect for its members, I decided not to post (google play) links and instead write a brief summary of each app.

-

1. Zoom Earth - Live Weather Map

an interactive weather map of the world and a real-time hurricane tracker

2. Vibrons

an app that lets you to design different notifications sound for your apps, so you can easily recognize notifications that matter to you.

3. My Track

an app that offers high-accuracy route tracking (and map) that follows streets and trails, records pauses, and monitors speed, making it an ideal choice for activities like hiking, especially if you want to revisit your favorite trails.

4. Moovit: Bus & Train Schedules / Citymapper

simply an app that offers public transportation schedules and helps in navigating / planning routes ; pretty helpful for those who travel a lot

5. 1 Edge

a Floating Window Edge Panels app, much like Samsung Edge

6. Gesture Suite

an app that lets you to define tasks through simple gestures. For example, drawing a letter can perform actions like returning to the home screen, opening an app or calling a specific contact.

7. Media Bar

an app that transforms your system's status bar into a media playback controller and progress indicator.

8. Pestle *

a new approach to recipe management - it simplifies the process of saving online recipes with a share button. The app then rewrites them in a note-like format, and tailors the organization to suit your preferences

9. Nap: notification manager

an app that stores and organizes your notifications, allowing you to read messages without needing to open them

10. Locket

an app for sharing photos to friends’ homescreens; it's like a messaging app, but exclusively for sharing pictures with selected contacts, which then display as widgets on your screen.

11. Tap Scroll

a very simple app that allows you to scroll up with a double tap on the status bar and scroll down with a single tap.

12. Type Keeper / Clipboard

as much as it might be a security risk, I frequently find myself copying a link to something and then forgetting to send or save it. It would be quite useful if there was an app that could save those links (or just anything you copy) locally, until you decide to delete it. Something like a clipboard manager.

other:

13. Screen Recorder

14. SMS / Contacts Backup & Restore - when switching to a new device

-

My goal is not to promote any of these apps, but rather to find suitable FOSS alternatives and maybe share some new and interesting concepts - which may be of interest to developers searching for new ideas!

This list is made up of proprietary apps - I'm not looking for other proprietary replacements (whether they are offline or not)! Do not suggest apps that are not open source. If possible, include the link of apps F-Droid page or source code repository.

Thank you in advance! ❤️

Hey there!

Do you want your own flair? Do you want me to create flairs for you to choose from, or do you want to be able to personalize your very own flair?

Do you want to be able to post memes in this subreddit?

Let me know what you want in the comments! ❤️

So I've been searching far and wide for an applock that supports biometrics or at least has a decent UI. Play store, we'll play store has it's own share of sketchy applocks. Any recommendations?🤧

I'm just playing around with an old KitKat tablet to hopefully use for offline use. What are your favorite FOSS apps for KitKat?

App Store: F-Droid Classic

File Manager: Material Files

Launcher: KISS Launcher

White Noise: Chroma Doze

Keyboard:

Gallery:

Clock:

Music Player:

Video Player:

Any other suggestions for an offline tablet would be great!

Apparently, Collabora Office disappeared from F Droid (and from its own repo) and today I see that the Collabora Office 6.4 Snapshot application received an update... I always saw that there were these two applications in the repo, to understand that the first one was abandoned in the favor of the second or? Is there no difference between them? I have the original application already installed on my phone and it no longer appears in the list of installed applications from F Droid.

I'm kinda tired of how Samsung Notes behaves but some of my notes have embedded pictures/videos. Is there an alternative notes app that supports that?

I'm self hosting an instance of airsonic advanced and want to connect it to my android phone. I have been using Subtracks but this doesn't support lyrics yet. Airsonic advanced has a feature where it can fetch lyrics using chartlyrics.com

Are there any Foss android apps that support this and can display the lyrics?

What I want is something that encrypts my data securely, like end to end encryption.

Also it would be nice if it would be a little smart and I don't have to add everything on my own, like being able to link accounts.

There's an app called Paisa, it's looks really good but isn't smart, nor does it synchronise with other devices, it's only available for Android too.

The app called Wallet is available for both platforms, and is smart too, but idk if it's also private, can someone tell me?

If it's not, please link me a private alternative with good features that is ideally smart, but most importantly syncs between iOS and Android.

Hi,

What's a good note-taking/journaling app that has linking between pages, like a wiki? I'm looking for cross-platform support between Android and either Ubuntu or Windows 10, with either native sync or support for SyncThing. Thank you!

Something like this website, but in app form. Preferably not a keyboard.

As the title says, I am looking for a FOSS Android Journal to journal my activities.

Here are some things which is a must for me:

  1. Local Database or option for local database (no self host/remote server host mandatory) but a local database only is preferable.
  2. Strong Encryption and decryption mechanism that can leverage my phone's fingerprint scanner.
  3. Easily exportable database and easily importable database.
  4. Markdown.
  5. No unnecessary permissions.

Here are some things which would be really nice to have, but I can live without them:

  1. Ability to attach files alongside your notes.
  2. Dark Mode
  3. Inbuilt video player (if say a video is attached to a note, then it would be good if I can play it within the app instead of downloading it and then playing it).

Notes:

I require this app for my phone only, and do not care about cross platform compatibility.

Thank you for your recommendations.

Hi,

Is there any opensource Virtual Android app for Android which I can use for Accessing Root Kind options, xposed etc.

I tried a few but they were mostly not virtual android just kind of PARRLEL SPACE.

Later I got one one it didn't have ArmV7 support and developer said It will never get support for it.

Things I need are

  1. A real Virtual Android
  2. Root Privilages
  3. Xposed support
  4. Foss
  5. ArmV7 Support

The current version on IzzyOnDroid, 12.1.0 Alpha 4, was released over a year ago. Has it been abandoned? Is it unsafe to use it if it's been this long?

I've seen some people here write that Material Files has been abandoned. In the period that the app hasn't received releases, Hai Zhang has been active on the project's GitHub presence. Also, the main branch got code commits today. It has been receiving relatively steady commits during the course of the year.

Material Files just had a brand new release, and will be updated to version 1.6.0 on default F-Droid in the next three days or less as per the currently running build cycle.
