I am looking at purchasing my first true audio setup for music and home theatre hybrid use (3.1 for now, 5.1 down the road) I've done a lot of research with the help of this sub but am still trying to figure out the towers vs. bookshelf speakers dilemma in regards to prioritizing music sound quality (not necessarily loudness.)

I've read the pro's and con's of each (if I go bookshelves I plan on getting a sub for each to even out bass response) but wanted to ask if anyone has any input as to whether my room size/setup should effect this choice (of towers vs. bookshelf speakers.)

  • My room size is 17.75 ft. wide x 14 ft. deep, with very high ceilings (& open concept.)
  • The L/R speakers will be on each side of a wall-mounted projector screen, so there will have to be about 8 ft. of distance between them
  • My listening distance will be about 9 ft. from the speakers

Anyone know if either type of speakers would still be equally viable in a situation like this, or would my listening distance & setup clearly dictate one over the other in your mind? Would love to hear your opinions.

Hi all,

Thank you in advance for reading. I'm kind of lost on where to start and would apprecaite all the help I can get.

Scuffed room layout:

Already purchased : Denon AVR-S760H

Thinking of going with two tower speakers for my first two speakers (I know bookshelves would probably be the better option, but then I have to get a sub and I really don't like the look of them on a stand)

Budget - $500 - $800 USD

I would prefer to get a used 1-2 year old $1,200 - $1,500 pair than a brand new $800 pair (I think).

Would this be a good start? Will it be an issue with phantom center?

The idea is to get two surrounds (maybe center) and a sub in about a year, so would rather go with more expensive (to me) towers atm.

Appreciate all recomendations for towers.

Thank you,

Nick

I currently have a 3.1 setup cobbled together with a 2014 AVRs900w, Klipsch sub, and klipsch bookshelves from an old setup.

Does the s900w allow control of each speaker in the graphic EQ? It seems to only have the L/R in the menu after disabling Audyssey. If so, I assume moving to a 2016 Denon AVR with Audyssey app compatibility is the cheapest way to adjust each channel. An s720w is about 250 on eBay. I'm planning to use REW to manually adjust the room along with a Dayton DSP LF for sub control.

Here is my proposed final setup:

  • LG G3 77
  • Denon AVR s720(920)w (~250)(cheapest used AVR with Audyssey XT and mobile app) I only need the ARC connection.
  • KEF Q150(450) (L/C/R)
  • klipsch ksw12
  • Dayton DSP LF (60) to add sub control
  • Fosi TP02 220watt plus 2 Dayton BST1 shakers (190)
  • Mic plus REW (80) to check Audyssey and manually adjust

That's about a grand if swapping out the AVR makes sense. Am I missing any alternatives that provide this level of calibration? I tried to select upgrades with a great performance to cost balance.

I'm looking to buy a 55" TV for a small-ish living room. I have the following choices, since I'll be ordering from Costco: Samsung CU7000, Sony X80K, LG UR8000, and Hisense A65K.

The main use will be streaming (Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Prime, etc.), and possibly some gaming, but very unlikely. It won't be used for cable TV.

Any recommendations between the four? I already have experience with an older Samsung, which was decent, and has lasted for many years, but I don't know what the quality of the one I'm looking at now is like.

I just installed a 7.1.4 surround sound system (Dolby Atmos). I absolutely love it for Atmos movies! But now I'd like to know if it's possible to upmix or convert stereo, 5.1, and 7.1 to Atmos somehow. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance!

Hello, I recently ran Audyssey calibration, and everything seemed to work fine. However, my subwoofer came out with a -8.5 dB setting. I find the bass a bit flat for my liking and would like to increase the sub volume. Now, my question is: what's the best way to do that? Should I adjust the Sub Level, which is currently set at 12 o'clock, or should I use the Subwoofer Level Adjust feature, or is there another option I should consider?

Thanks in advance!

Is there really a big difference between the Xbox one s and the Panasonic ub420? I use and Epson 5050ub so I don't need Dolby vision. I also haven't had any issues with the Xbox playing discs.

Hello everyone,

I've had an Ultima 40 5.1 Teufel surround set for three years now and just came to the realization that I've always looked at 5.1 wrongly. I thought the Surround speakers at the back were suppose to be Rear speakers, but now I know they are surround speakers and only with 7.1 do you get rear speakers.

Due to a room rearrangement I was albe to take the perfect seating position from the back wall to middle of the room and I was able to but the surround speakers further away to the back wall. When I ran Audyssey I noticed that I could only select rear speakers if I actually had surround speakers to the side. Since I have more room now I can actually do this so I added some old Infinity TSS1200 speakers to the sides of the couch and now have 7.1. But I wanted to add two ceiling speakers in our yet to be build lowered ceiling. Since I have the X1600H Denon receiver I can only do 7.1 OR 5.1.2.

This puts me in the dilemma, do I forgo on the ceiling speakers and keep 7.1 OR start saving up (around august '24 should be achievable) for an upgrade to the X3800H Denon and add 4 ceiling speakers since I will have channels available anyway.

I currently have two POLK RC60i speakers ready to put in the still to be built lowered ceiling and could order two more. That would give me the oppertunity to hook them up as soon as I saved up for the X3800H Denon.

Should I make these investments or just be glad with a 7.1 and return the POLK speakers?

My setup:

BenQ W2700 ceiling mounted

Hivilux 110 inch White projector screen

X1600H Denon receiver

Ultima 40 5.1 Teufel set.

two Infinity TSS1200 speakers

two POLK RC60i speakers ready to put in ceiling

Playstation 5

Extra: Completly darkened room

I’ve recently purchased a Denon AVC-x3800h with some Cambridge Audio Minx speakers for a surround sound set up due to limited room size. They perform okay but for the last couple of years I’ve been listening to music on a CXA81 with two LS50 metas so I can hear the difference.

I’m thinking of replacing the front left and right minx speakers with the kefs. I’m looking to add a turntable to mix and I see the denon has a preamp so would reduce the amount of equipment needed.

Is this a sensible idea or would I be better off buying preamp and keeping the two setups separated?

Hey Folks,

i need your collective brain to find a solution for my home theater.

As you can see, i got that heater on the floor and still want to find a solution for my rear speaker. The right one wont be the problem, wall mount on the right or back wall and things roll on.

but where to put the left one? I cant place it on the grid, sometimes we want to go/vacuum there. On the left from the couch is too close to ear or its getting asymmetrical from the right.

behine the curtains is a big window front.

Do you have any idea? Maybe some mobile one, like foldable stand or something like this.

I want to avoid seeing or laying cables on the floor.

My actual Setup is DALI Zensor 7 + Vocal, Denon X1700 and Klipsch 12Sub. I would go with dali fazon micro, used zensor 1 or something like this. Maybe you got an idea, s long as they are not too big.

Hey everyone,

What do you think of the TV mentioned in the title?

Is it worth getting for the price?

I don't want to go above 2k for a TV and this seems to me like a good deal, with the fact it is from a reputable store, offering a warranty on top of it. If I find the state of the TV unsuitable I can return immediately.

For an 85" i don't think I will be able to find something better for the price. Or?

Cheers

After much going and froing, I think the time has come to move on from my Anthem 720. The sound it produces feels too bright for my ears. Also, it has broken once and my Anthem PVA 7 has developed a fault.

All told, I think it’s time for a change.

I only ever use it for movies and have an XTZ Cinema series (M6 LCR, S5 surrounds.)

What would a good alternative be?

With thanks

Hey guys, I am looking to dabble back into physical media. I am shopping around for a player and want to pick one that works for what I've got.

I'm looking to play CDs/DVDs/Blu-Rays. Probably not UHD4Ks as I don't think I will see the benefit. Please correct me if I am wrong.

My setup: LG 48" A1 OLED, Yamaha RX385, 2 bookshelves and a center speaker. Often I use a Fiio Bluetooth DAC with a pair of Philips SHP9600 Open Backs. I sit 7'-8' away from the TV if I am going to sit down and watch a movie. I live in a relatively small apartment with wood floors and thin walls, so my sound system is unlikely to get any upgrades.

I was looking at entry level sub-$100 players or maybe a used LG UBK80. I see the Panasonic 820 and Sony X700/X800 mentioned but they are quite expensive and, I feel, overkill for my setup? It seems kinda silly to drop that much on a player if I'm playing disks from my local library or thrift shop.

Any help appreciated, thanks!

Hi Folks, I am looking at changing my AV furniture for some semi custom rack. The issue I am having is on the centre speaker where my bars would come in front of the woofers (for low frequency)

The mid/high section is fully clear.

does anyone else run it similary ? or has any experience with this.

My reasoning was that it will be 'ok' as the voice-range is free and not 'muffled' and for the lower frequences I am not sure I will notice it from the center speaker.

Hi,

I bought the Klipsch RP-600M IIs and YAMAHA RX-V385 and am trying to hear the glorious sound these speakers are said to produce.

I have the 600Ms connected to the YAMAHA using 16 gauge wire and an HDMI cable connecting the YAMAHA to my PCs GPU (4070 Ti) but can not hear anything. What am I missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be moving in a new place soon and will have a room like in the picture, so my PC setup and TV will be next to each other. A little modification is that the TV will be mounted on the wall so it's gonna be a bit higher. Is there a somewhat optimal spot to place my speakers to, so it's good if I sit on my chair and also on the couch in front of my TV?

Maybe I don't need any upgrades and I just need someone to convince me not to spend money but I was wondering if anyone could give some insight into what I should look into upgrading. Personally leaning into either a new Receiver or Sub as I'm quite happy with the Axiom speakers. Any insight is appreciated, thanks!

Here's my current setup

Center: Axiom VP100 V2

Front Left and Right: Axiom M22 V2

Rears: Axiom QS4 V2

Heights: Polk Audio OWM3

Sub: Dayton Audio Sub-1200

Receiver: Onkyo TX-NR6050

Whenever I play any AAC soundtrack, my TV transmits AC-3 signals to my AVR. Stereo or Multichannel.

  • TV is a Samsung SmartTV from 2019.
  • AVR is a 2018 DENON.
  • They are connected with HDMI ARC

I know some devices transcode any unsupported format to AC3 as a fallback but both my AVR and TV support AAC natively, why transcode it?

Dolby Digital is rather compressed and I rather listen to the high quality AAC track instead.

Good morning r/hometheater,

I want to setup a Sonance IS15W invisible passive subwoofer with a NAD T758 V3i.

I am not used to setting up passive woofers, so hence the newbie question...

I thought about a bridged DSP2-150 from Sonance, but how do I wire all of this ?

NAD's Pre-Out SUBW > DSP2-150's analog IN > IS15W

How does that sound ?

Looking forward to your responses since I'm at a wall here !

Thanks for reading and have a nice day.
