So I just bought a house and have a room designated for my very first official home theater. It’s a 16ft long and 13ft wide. Thinking about doing a 5.1.4 possibly. 12k is my budget. Want to get the very best I can get. Just want to feel like I’m in the movie! Any help with an awesome setup would be awesome.

I'm new to home theater and I'm just wondering what y'all would recommend here. I have the potential for a 5.1.2 setup but I want to start simple and just get 3.1 sounding really good first. I'll start with dimensions and photos.

TV is a 65" Sony. Mounted on a Mantle Mount that drops down to eye level (I splurged and got the automatic kind and it might be the coolest thing I've ever purchased). Had an electrician do the wiring for the LCR speakers as well as wires for future behind speakers that will run along the molding.

There are also 4 above speakers in each corner of viewing area - these came with the house and I don't know what's in them but have confirmed they do function by testing with a battery. There is also a preexisting wire for a sub behind the couch.

There are two primary viewing positions. The first and most common viewing position will be at the back of the room on the couch (around 15' from the screen). A second potential viewing position would be 9' from the screen on an eventual swivel chair, but this isn't really a priority as it'll probably just be used for gaming.

Photos:

For all options except Red, the Center channel is on the floor tilted up. Ideally I could mount it below the TV but the clearance from the mantel is extremely due to the drop down mount. I might be able to raise everything up a bit, but if I can't get the clearance, is a center speaker on the floor pointed up an OK option?

Option Purple: This would probably be the easiest but I'm worried I'm not going to get the best stereo effect from the couch. That said, do you think it would be OK from the closer viewing position? (About where the coffee table ends, closest to the TV)

Option Green: The main thing I'm worried about with this is that the Left and Right would be off-center. Right would be farther from the Center than Left would. Would this amount of off-center create a noticeable issue with the sound?

Option Orange: This might be my best bet in terms of coming close to a good triangle and get good stereo, but I'd be "limited" to bookshelf speakers. I might be able to spread them out even more - the sweet spot would probably be to have the R speaker in the center shelf, but I don't know if the aesthetics that come with that are great (which I have to balance with my partner).

Option Red: This is the biggest question mark for me and I don't know if if it's feasible. But presumably I could have my Ls and Rs as ceiling mounts that are tilted down toward the viewing position? Also, if I went ahead with this option for L&R, I assume it would it be better to mount the center channel on the wall above the TV and tilted down?

Not much to say about the back, I'm not that concerned about it right now. I know the couch isn't in the ideal position for behind speakers, but I can't really move it up any farther.

That said, I think the options I drew would be OK for the closer viewing position? In which case I'm assuming my choice would depend on where I'm placing my Front Left and Front Right. Then there's the question of what to do with the Back Aboves - Dolby Atmos would be cool, but it's the lowest priority at the moment.

Any help y'all could give me is very very appreciated, I'm in decision overload right now. Thanks!

So I set up everything with the setup assistant. All sounded good there. And my xbox one S can run blurays at 5.1 uncompressed without a hitch. But the youtube ap is stereo (it used to be surround). And trying to run youtube from the TV itself is stereo, no matter what (also used to be surround). And running my PC as well, stereo. Right when I first set everything up initially, surround worked for everything except my PC. But I got a firmware update on the receiver and on the TV, tried setting my hdmi formats properly and setting up devices with my TV and whatnot and now it's in its broken state. Am I doing something wrong or does EARC just suck? Thanks.

PS: I've hard reset my pc, xbox, everything. I've dinked around with resetting EARC, etc. My next step if no one responds is to go xbox->receiver->TV and see if youtube surround works.

Edit: Gasp. One of my hdmi in the loop is hdmi 1.4. I'm going to buy hdmi 2.0 right now and evaluate after. Totally could be the problem... though the hdmi 2.1 cable is the earc cable, so the tv should have worked surround sound....

UPDATE: Solution found. Stupid x900h tv set to PCM output actually means STEREO. Ya could have told me that, ya stinking sony TV. SO you have to set that to auto1 to get surround sound via earc.

Which should I use to connect my projector (Epson LS12000) to my receiver (Marantz Cinema60)?

From what I’ve read, 2.2 is more about content protection and may not actually be a step up from 2.1 otherwise.

Thoughts?

So I use a home-theatre receiver attached to my PC via HDMI, along with satellite speakers and a subwoofer.

This old Sony 5.1-system-pack-in has an audible always-on hum, especially when the room is quiet. I'm 100% certain what I'm hearing is hum from the power transformer in the subwoofer.

Are subwoofers that don't hum a thing, and if so how can I find one?

My living room is a little bit wonky so my fronts have to be 6 feet apart or 15’. Watching position is about 12’ away on a large sectional that is slightly off center from the TV. Would adding a center channel add anything or am I fine with a phantom center?

I am installing 8" ceiling speakers in my house for music in 6 places. Unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough to build boxes in the joists before the drywall went up. I know that just sticking them in the drywall will allow noise to travel to floors above and will also result in the sound going down not sounding as good. I'm wondering if there is a solution that I can shove up into the 9" holes I cut into the ceiling that will make a real difference to warrant the effort.

Here are my thoughts. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether one of these would work and which one would work the best? Any other ideas? I appreciate the help.

  1. shove rockwool into the hole to rest on top of the speaker

  2. create a box out of five sheets of 12x12 foam (either acoustic foam or 1.5" polyethylene foam) by gluing them together in the shape of a box and then shoving that into the hole to sit on top of the speaker backing before inserting the speaker.

  3. Similar as above but buying foam baffles that you put into cars for car speakers and gluing acoustic foam to the outside of that and shoving that into the hole to sit on top of the speaker back.

  4. buy mass loaded vinyl and cut into squares (maybe double it up) and stick it into the hole to rest on top of the speaker. Alternative glue it down onto the underside of the drywall to seal it in better.

No clue what’s going on but all the sudden when I paused whatever is playing there’s a very faint static noise playing from one speaker only. I don’t think the speaker is busted when content is playing it sounds amazing as it always had. Just randomly started doing this. Any ideas oh wise ones?

My Denon AVR X220W started to suddenly turn off with a blinking red light (e.g. Protect Indicator) . It ONLY occurs during the initial boot. Sometimes it will immediately blink red. Sometimes it will start with the normal blinking white and then blinking red. Sometimes it takes a second and sometimes it takes 5-10 seconds. When it is working, it is perfectly fine and does not shut off. Ever. To trouble shoot, I disconnected at the speaker terminals, all of the inputs (NIVIDIA, Blu-Ray, cable box), and connected the AVR right into the outlet. To avoid dealing with re-connecting, I kept the speaker wire plugged in and all of the wiring but they were disconnected at the other end. I also removed power from everything and plugged the AVR right into the wall. Aside from hard reset, any other ideas?

Hi! Is there a recommended HDMI cable for running in wall so that the TV stays truly flat against the wall? So many of the HDMI cables I see are not very flexible and very rigid. Trying to run 4 cables in wall to the G3.

Basically title.

Can I save some money on an AVR by buying one without HDMI 2.1 if I plan to connect my PS5 direct to my TV, and then my TV to my AVR? Are there any negatives to this?

I just bought a 120hz 4kTV and want to take advantage of that.

A downside of LCD to OLED or micro-LED is bleeding of background light to adjacent pixels. There’s a lot of articles that simply end the explanation with “background light shine through” or “bleed into surrounding area”.

I’m wondering WHY it shines through pixels that are black (set to block all colours).

Article links or explanation appreciated.

Recently setup my new 3.1 system and have a couple questions. I’m completely new to using an AVR, Using a Denon X3800h Currently I have it wired as follows:

TV(arc HDMI 3) -> AVR-> speakers

Xbox One X -> TV (HDMI 1)

  1. when I press the “Setup” button on the AVR remote, the setup opens but I manually have to use the Tv remote and select the “Source” and then select it. Should it not open automatically? Am I missing a connection or have it backwards?

  2. when watching TV or YouTube the AVR automatically selects “Direct” and the center channel turns off. If I swap to a movie on Netflix then the center is working with dialogue. For the TV apps or any source for that matter can I not select to have all 3 LCR working?

For HDMI input audio: Bitstream selected

Digital output audio output: PCM selected (only other option is DTS Neo 2.5) - Dolby Digital becomes available in Netflix and YouTube.

Sound Output: Receiver HDMI

What have I done wrong?

Following up to this post (back when I was going to spend way less haha)

I have these ordered or picked up already!

  • RSL Speedwoofer 12s ($700)
  • Polk OWM3 (x4) Atmos ($300)
  • KEF Q150 (x4) ($545 - got them off fb marketplace)
  • Onkyo NR 7100 ($600)
  • Monolith speaker stands 32in for the surrounds - a little higher than ear level to clear the recliner back better and then these to angle them down a little back towards ear level wedge
  • monolith 28 in for the L and R

Now just waiting to find a deal on a used Q650C or something similar.

Thanks for all the help!

Hello!

I have a Benq X3000i projector and a Samsung TV. I have all my devices hooked up to a Denon AVR-S760H receiver.

I want to be able to switch between my TV and the projector depending on what I want to play or watch movies on.

I'm looking at a 1 In - 2 Out splitter that does 8K60Hz and 4K@120hz.

Do I need this splitter to have eARC ports? Is there a splitter someone can recommend me if so? Thank you!
