Hey guys. Currently trying to decide what my next upgrade should be. I currently have a 5.1.2 system in a small dedicated media room. My system includes a 65” LG CX, Onkyo NR-TX656, Klipsch R-820-Fs for L and R, Klipsch 504C, KEF q350s for rear surrounds, two Klipsch in ceilings, and a Sonance 10-150 sub. I’m currently debating what to upgrade first, my AVR or my speakers. The AVR I’m looking at is the Denon 3800H. For speakers I’m essentially looking to upgrade everything to the Premiere line (RP-8000F IIs for L and R, RP-600M IIs for rear surrounds or to add as surrounds amd keep the q350s, and a RP-1200SW sub). The interesting thing here is that price is gonna be a little different as far as a factor. My buddy is a Klipsch rep and I can pretty much get all the Klipsch stuff at cost. Now just cause I can do that doesn’t mean I’m gonna go crazy and do the top of the line everything. The room is only about 10x15’ and my viewing area is only about 10’ of that 15’. Since I can get the AVR or the speakers at essentially the same price, what do you guys think the first upgrade should be? I wanna upgrade my AVR so I have all 2.1 sources directly the the AVR, room correction, and the possibility to add 2 more channels down the road if I want. For speakers I’d like to upgrade the left and right and get everything in the same series. The q350s were an old stereo set up I added to my theater set up when I upgraded my stereo set up. The sub was sitting around in my old work’s warehouse. And I’ve had the floor stand for 5 or 6 heats now as my first purchase.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I am trying to decide on Front - Center - Right speakers for my 5.1.2 "home theater" (a small room, about 3.5x3.5 meters). The rest of the speakers I already have including the sub (SVS sb-1000 pro).

I am in Europe. Can you suggest LCR speakers €400 - €700 in total that sound great for movies. My only other requirement is that the center speaker is not wider than 52cm.

Please suggest speakers from mainstream brands that exist in Europe (KEF, Q Acoustics, Wharfedale, Polk, Klipsch, Dali, SVS, Yamaha etc) as I live in a somewhat remote location and not everything is available to me.

Hello everyone,

After reading this sub and doing research I’ve decided I’ll return the Soundbar I have on order and do a proper 5.1 System for my newly upgraded Sony 75”X90L.

I have a small media room that I think will work well for speaker placement. It is small at about 12x12.

I am on a bit of a budget and was wondering if ordering the speakers recommended on the “Soundbar Killer” buying guide are still recommended.

Right now I can get a good sale price on the Sony CS5 which I would use for front and surrounds. I’d then get the CS8 for my center speaker.

Then I’d just have to find a sub and receiver somewhere.

I’ve read some threads where people really talk up the Sony speakers, and my room is pretty small so I think they would be fine.

Is more research required or could I just start buying?

Thanks

I have an old Samsung 58” Plasma that only has HDMI 1.3 inputs, no HDMI outputs. The only usable output is 1 digital Optical. The TV only supports Dolby Digital Not DD+. My question is, if I buy a newer AVR that is Dolby Atmos will it decode the DD from the TV Optical output and create 5.1 surround? The source will be Roku Ultra 8100x HDMI to TV or Direct TV going HDMI to TV. I read that Dolby Atmos will interpret Dolby Digital +, but I can not find anything that explains what the Atmos AVR will do with the old DD stream.

For context i have a 7.1 set up running off a denon x2200w its been perfect since i got it however i feel its time to upgrade my tv ,i currently have a 60” 4kuhd Hisense ive had it for 4 years and since i have the sound experience i now want the ultimate viewing experience.

I want to know what tv would be best suited for me, I watch alot of tv on all sorts of platforms however i also watch movies on iptv which doesnt always have the best quality. now i have a top line of £1000 oled is an option but im not sure if its worth it for me when i could get one that is more suited and less expensive.

Might seem a little all over the place but best i can explain it.

Hey All,

Looking to upgrade from my current 3.1 setup to a 7.1 setup by adding side and back surrounds. Hoping I can get advice on side/back surround speaker placement before I start cutting holes in my drywall and running cables through the walls.

Common advice dictates that the side surrounds should be 1-2 feet above ear height (at ear height if height channels are present) and pointing down at the listener - however I lack a wall on the left side of the space. Because of this I am thinking that I have to mount the left side surround "too high" on the dry-walled duct up near the ceiling to get it up and out of the way so that I don't hit my head on it when walking around. The 2 tradeoffs with this placement is that it is higher then "common advice" dictates, and secondly it impacts my ability to upgrade again in the future to a 7.1.2 system by reducing the spatial separation from the 2 ceiling channels if/when they are installed.

The other option would be to have the left side surround on a stand next to the couch at ear level. However with this placement how to run the wire? I guess I could cut holes in the carpet but that doesn't seem like the cleanest install and would negatively impact the "wife approval factor."

Any recommendations on surround placement within my particular space?

I have a 5.1.4 set up with the Pioneer VSX-LX304 receiver and the Pioneer Andrew Jones Dolby Atmos set up.

I have the UG8 65' Hisense and I use my Shield TV PRO 2019 for content. I've had this set up for a couple of years with no issues. No if I mute my audio, there's like a weird clipping sound and when I unmute, there's no sound. The same clipping happens when my receiver starts or when I'm attempting to play anything with Dolby Atmos.

I have tried disconnecting the power, restarting, changing HDMI cords from the receiver. It is connected to the eARC ports on both the tv and receiver. In the video you can hear the clicking I'm referring to.

Anyone have any ideas on what else to troubleshoot?

I’m setting up a home theater in my house right now and am having trouble with the subwoofer placement. As of right now the only place I am able to put it is the back corner of the theater due to the front being completely full and having a massive sub. This means it would take a solid 25-30 foot cord to connect the sub to the receiver, or even longer. Is this a bad thing to do? Or is there any other way of connecting the sub? Any advice would be very appreciated. Thanks

Good day guys,

I’ve been a long time viewer of the subreddit and I’m ready to pull the trigger on a sound system.

I would like a recommendation for a 5.1 speaker setup. My budget is roughly $1500 USD. however i saw a crazy good deal for Klipsch. which comes with up-firing speakers.

The speakers are: Klipsch Reference R-625FA 5.1 Home Theater Pack, Black Textured Wood Grain Vinyl

If there is anything that is just as good please recommend.

As well as a recommendation for a receiver. Which isn’t accounted in the budget. The budget for the receiver is $500-$700 USD. Separate from the speaker’s budget.

The current room size is a 12’ x 12’

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi all. I have a desktop computer that has a very long run to my A/V cabinet. I used a fiber optic HDMI cable. Running it straight to my receiver has zero issues. Now, I want to add a switcher such that sometimes I want to have it switched to route to my receiver and sometimes I want to bypass the receiver and have it run to another external monitor directly. Such that it would be Desktop -> Fiber Optic HDMI -> Switcher -> [ HDMI+Receiver or FiberOpticHDMI+Monitor]. I have two simple HDMI switches I purchased off Amazon like the "llano HDMI 2.0 Switch" and neither output properly to the Receiver or the Monitor. I have tested the switcher to work if the input is NOT Fiber Optic HDMI and I have tested both Fiber Optic HDMI cables to work when they are directly in a source and destination. However, the combo of things does not produce an output. Does anyone know of a switcher that might work for my setup? FYI interestingly enough when the switcher is switched to the external monitor the Desktop recognizes the monitor and even properly names it in the Nvidia display settings, but no video is output properly the display just enters sleep mode.

I am quite limited on space. I am in EU and this is a living room setup which should look good. Research has led me to Arendal’s 1961 1v sub which has a side firing woofer.

Sub would be in a corner. This way the woofer would face a wall with about 2 inch gap and port would also face a back wall. Is this fine?

I recently switched from optimal to hdmi arc so I can control my amplifier sound level with my tv remote. I think that the issue is that the amplifier sends signals to the TV when it is off and turns it on. The TV is Samsung S95C and the amplifier is Lyngdorf TDAI-2170.

The event log from the TV says CEC so I tried disabling CEC(anynet+), but then the sound via hdmi arc doesn't work anymore and I'm forced back to optical.

Any tips and/or tricks on how to fix this? I'm a noob when it comes to home theater set up.

I've updating the front end of my living room setup and am in search of a media console that will meet my needs.

  • Length: 60 - 70"
  • Low Profile: Height under 20" to allow for a center channel to be placed on top. I'd then set my TV on top and raised just enough to clear the speaker without pushing the TV too high.
  • Fit my Yamaha Receiver (RX-V4A) and PS5
  • Allow for adequate ventilation
  • Cost < $1,500
  • Looks good

I currently have the Burrow Opera media stand on order. It checks most of the boxes - but I'm not in love with the design.

I found a really nice looking media stand on Amazon. However, ventilation may be an issue. I'd only have a gap of 1" above the receiver. My thought is to add 2 AC Infinity fans onto the back (one on both sides) to bring in fresh air and then exhaust warm air. With the addition of the rear ventilation is this still too tight of a fit to make work?

Sorry if it's not the right subreddit, but I have a question. I currently have some dvd and blu-ray but nothing to read them on my TV. Since I'd read them very occasionaly, I was thinking buying just an external player (that I could store back in a drawer when not used), but my TV is pretty old (10 y), even if it has some HDMI port (model samsung LE32C530F1W). Can I buy any external blu-ray player, or will there be some sort of driver problem that may prevent me from using it ?

Thanks in advance,

I have the Edifier R1280TS speakers (the one with the sub out on the back).

It only just occurred to me that the sub out port on the back is 3.5mm and not RCA.

I'm going to buy an adapter to convert one end if my RCA cable to 3.5mm but it's giving a pole count option (2 or 3).

I've never even considered whether pole count mattered for 3.5mm before, or if it would affect the signal going to a subwoofer in any way.

Should I just get whichever? Does it make any difference?

Hello to everybody, it will be a long thread but i want to be clear because i can't decide what TV to choose. My brain is dead with all this reviews, techs and pro/cons etc..., so let's start with some inputs to be easy to receive some guidance from you.

What i have:

  • Budget: 600-800 euro (i can hardly stretch to 1000 euro...but i don't really want to spend so much);

  • My last tv was Philips The One ( 50PUS8536 ), not coming from best TV but i would like something a bit better.

What i want:

  • Size: 50-55 inch ( with some exception i can go to min 48 inch)

  • Refresh rate: HDMI 2.1 + min. 100Hz ( Gaming from PC, i got nice rig that can handle 4k100hz+)

  • Would be used for: TV Channel, Netflix,Prime, etc

  • Not be worse than my last PHILIPS 50PUS8536.

  • Have at least what my last TV had: HDR10, HDR10+, HDR HLG, Dolby Vision

  • Brightness to be at least same or better then PHILIPS 50PUS8536

  • LED,QLED,MiniLed,QNED,NanoCell (Philips was MVA Direct Led)...its doesnt matter if its looks good, fit in my budget and is not worsen then a 2021 Philips.

What models i saw ( EUROPE vers.):

  • TCL 55C805

  • TCL 55MQLED80

  • Hisense 55E7KQ PRO

  • Hisense U7KQ (U8KQ..over and i don't know if really worth it)

  • Philips 50 and 55PUS8808/12 ( kind of my last one...but more Hz)

  • Philips 55PML9008

  • LG QNED81 / QNED82 (really bad reviews)

  • LG QNED916 ( 1000 Euro...i prefer not to invest so much)

  • LG 48 inch OLED C3 and C3 Evo ( 1000 Euro... same as QNED, i prefer not to invest so much)

  • LG 55 inch OLED B3 ( 1000 Euro... same as QNED, i prefer not to invest so much)

**Sony, Samsung waaaay over my budget for what spec i want.*

What i fear:

First of all, i don't expect to have all the tech that a top end tv have...that's why i am a bit worry about TCL / Hisense, they got sooo much for so cheap and sometimes its result in doing worst everything.

  • I fear of bad upscale of low quality content. As i said it will be used for TV Channel (some are not 4K), Youtube (not every content are 4K).

  • Bad motion clarity and blurrrrrri. Yeah, i don't expect to be equal to an 1000 euro gaming monitor, but if is worst...then there is no reason to invest in a TV with 100Hz.

  • Judder, i don't know if i understand well this phenomenon but when i was in some store i was looking close to an TCL and you can saw that there was some "non fluidity" or "tetris like" on small details in the video.

  • OS locking, restart/reboot random, artifacts, etc (never ever had a problem with my Philips).

Feel free to suggest other models that will fit in my budget if you consider, really prefer around 800 euro max.

Thank you for your time, sorry for long post :D !!!

I see a many threads on how to treat a room on a low budget. Assuming you don’t DIY the panels, but you want to do it properly in an average sized room, what is a reasonable budget for treating the room with absorbers (e.g. 15%), diffusers (e.g. 15%), and bass traps (four corners)?

I upgraded my sub from an 8" down firing to an svs sb2000 and I'm almost positive I'm doing something wrong. The sub has minimal impact so I'm sure my setup is to blame.

Setup per the manual: Volume 50% Phase set to 0 Low pass filter LFE Single Pin from sub pre out 1 to LFE in on sub

AV Receiver Configured to 5.1.2

Sub is active and in normal phase setting

Distance is appropriate

Level is 0.0 dB (tried -10 to +10 without noticable difference)

Parametric EQ is flat

Band 1 31.3 hz Q1 gain 0 dB

Band 2 62.5 hz Q1 gain 0 dB

Band 3 125 hz Q1 gain 0 dB

Band 4 250 hz Q1 gain 0 dB

Any help would be appreciated!
