I'm asking on behalf of my dad, so I will word it the best I can. We are upgrading our old receiver to an Arcam AVR31. He wants to get it for the Class G amplifiers. Seeing as the Arcam only has 7 channels, we need a separate amplifier unit to run a 7.1.2 Atmos setup. Now, we are looking at a seperate Arcam amplifier to run the overheads with 2 channels for $1000 that also has class g amps. however, there is another unit we are looking at that is the same price and has 4 channels but AB amps. The room we are in is 12ft x 18ft. Is it worth it to have 4 overhead speakers or would 2 be sufficient? We already have 4 main speakers, 2 smaller back wall speakers, and a sub.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I recently purchased a Denon AVR-S970H to replace an Onkyo that stopped working. I chose the S970H because it has 2 HDMI outputs - one for a Samsung TV and another for a Panasonic Projector.

When I turn on the TV (on HMDI Output Monitor 1 - ARC, eARC), everything works great.

When I turn on the projector (On Monitor 2), the TV ALSO turns on. If I turn off the TV manually using the Samsung remote, the AVR also turns off.

Is there a setting I need enabled to have the AVR turn on EITHER Monitor 1 or Monitor 2 depending on whether the TV or the Projector is on ?

(I'm using a Logitech Harmony Ultimate universal remote with separate activities for TV+AVR and Projector+AVR.)

I'm going to try this without mentioning specific speakers here to avoid brand bias.

In order to appease the Significant Other I'm trying to go from my tower speakers and large center channel speaker to a much smaller set of satellite/bookshelf type speakers for my home theatre.

First of all I love my traditional towers and center sp. I'm 100% happy with the way they sound. But to make her happy, I thought I'd give this a try. I found a nice used setup from a well known brand on EBay, read some reviews online which sang their praises, and ordered them.

Set arrives, get them all hooked up, room correction settings redone, start a movie that I know well and it was horrible! The highs were like an icepick through the ears and midrange to midbass were grating. Fiddled with the 2 subs a lot, but there is still a massive hole between when they roll off and the bookshelves take over. OK, Calling this a fail.

Back to Ebay. Find another set for sale. Same thing, highly reviewed, larger in size but still has the acceptance factor from the SO. Order them, they arrive, hooked up, redo room correction. Different sound signature but still overblown highs, thin mids and unable to match my subs to them. Maybe 10% better than the first set, but still....Fail. Very frustrating.

I personally don't think I'm that picky about my speakers. My tower setup is strictly in the mid-fi/consumer category. Both of the new 5 speaker sets were significantly higher priced (when new) than my current set, doubling and tripling the original MSRP of my current setup. SO agrees that the replacement attempts haven't sounded very good, but I do still want to try and shrink things and make her happy. Has anyone here been able to go from a tower/large center L/C/R setup to a bookshelf size and been happy?

So I ask you reddit, what should my next steps be? Buy set off ebay, audition, resell is quite the hassle. Reviewers tastes and mine certainly don't match. Buck up and drive the 6 hours to the big metro area that has a hi-fi store with a theatre room?

I remember thinking the mini cubes (so what if the sub did the heavy lifting), the 3-2-1 system, etc I saw them in the stores 15 years ago. So what changed? Why does this sub always talk shit on them? Are they sellouts or did their equipment quit working followed by shitty customer support (like they did with my $250 mini soundlink Bluetooth speaker that quit connecting to my phone?) On a more positive note, though, I also have one of the vintage wave radios with Bluetooth dongle as the radio in my bedroom, and have some old 301 series ii in my shop that sound fantastic. Why do they get no love here?

Edit to add: I don’t have one, I’m not considering one, I’m pleased with my Yamaha/psb/AR9 setup…just don’t understand why they seem to trigger so many of y’all! lol Relax y’all, there’s underpriced shit everywhere!

I recently got the Klipsch 600c about a month ago. I can still exchange it for the 500C II. It would be pretty much the same price. Both $350.

Is it worth the trouble? There's little to no info if that can help decide if one is better than the other.

I don't know if this helps but my front speakers are the Klipsch 600M II.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone willing to advise a noob on which is better? Here is my situation: I got an Onkyo TX-RZ50 to replace my old Pioneer that had amazing surround sound for movies with a 5.1 speaker setup that finally went out after what had to be 25 years. I actually got a new Pioneer Elite first, but couldn't reproduce that awesome surround sound. Upgraded to the Onkyo. Initially had the same problem of a lack of good surround sound and was ready to return it, but then found a mode that sounded much better, Dolby Surround THX Cinema. But still not much sound out the side or back speakers. Been seeing Emotiva come up in my research.

Wondering if Emotiva will give me even better overall sound than the Onyko, specifically the BasX MR1L receiver. And in particular, if it will pump more powerful sound to the side and surround speakers. I have a 7.1 setup now. I know the fronts are the workhorses of a home theater setup. But I really want that immersive surround effect the old Pioneer somehow had. As a test, I pulled out the wire from the two fronts and center channel just to see what all would be coming out of the side and rear speakers in an action-packed movie, and it was next to nothing. From a THX-certified receiver.

So, any opinions on which wins the battle between the Onkyo TX-RZ50 with THX and the Emotiva BasX MR1 in terms of both overall sound quality for action movies and more immersive surround sound?

I've been looking for an hdmi splitter with cec and a downscalling function for my home theater. But I can't find one that isn't extremely pricey. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Have tried searching and just cant find anything on this issue.

My receiver has been in pure mode for as long as I remember and trying to run it with the EQ presets for movies or music only result in no sound coming out. The only way to her anything is in pure mode. I just realized that in pure mode it is not leveraging the speaker setup. Very frustrated after spending time going through a bunch of menu items and to no avail.

Any pointers or help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

I have a onkyo 3.1 system from the early 2000s, it sounds great, but it's a bit too loud for my bedroom. Would a klipsch 5.1 system be an upgrade for space/not as loud? I can grab the set second hand for $75. Let me now what ya think! Thanks!

Does it make a big difference if you use the factory made banana plug cables or make your own from a spool of cabe?(as for the sound)

Hey all,

I have an STR DN-1080 that I’m pretty happy with. I’ve had it paired with the following Klipsch speakers for a while:

C: RC500 L/R: RB600 Surr: RS400 Sub: SW110 Atmos: RP140SA

This kicks ass (to me anyways) for movies even with the sub dialed down out of respect for my downstairs neighbor.

I’m not thrilled with the volume / dialogue level. Often too low or explosions too loud.

But music on its own sounds quite harsh sometimes and I’m left wondering if it’s time to find a warmer set of speakers or if there is something I can do in the settings besides raising the bass and lowering the treble (in EQ).

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

So the well-regarded SVS Soundpath Wireless Adapter never worked properly in my living room for my subwoofer. Basically it would cut out for a few seconds every couple minutes. I assume there is some sort of interference with other wireless devices in my house. Unfortunately the real solution of running an RCA cable to the other side of the living room was not going to be easy. I was ready to call an installer but learned about the Tri-band version. It works perfectly. Definitely give it a try if you have issues with the standard one or just have a lot of wireless devices in your home. It is $200 vs. $120.

I'm trying to figure out how to make a soundbar float on the wall with no wires, and can't seem to find a proper method to hiding the power cable. TIA

So I recently bought a fiber command cable fiber optic HDMI cable relatively short 20 ft run…. For my projector an Epson LS12000 projector, the cable is powered by USB, and is directional, from Device(AVR)to display(projector). I have a Pioner VSX-LX504, the old Monoprice cable I’ve been using for this run works fine, how ever when I plug the fiber optic cable in, I get no image… however if I bypass the AVR and plug the cable directly in to the Apple TV I get an image. I called pioneer the tech had me try a number of burried settings, the only thing that seem to work is switching the AVR out or back into HDMI advance mode, or deep color. However this only works temporarily… he seemed to think it’s some sort of handshake issue, I called Epson and they had me try a couple of things but they think it’s an AVR issue. Anyone else have experience with this? It’s a very specific problem so I don’t expect many answers but has anyone ever experienced this kind of issue and found a work around?
