This is a common question here, so I'm trying to put together some FAQs. If you have anything to add, or any corrections please leave a comment below. Specs are based on Dolby recommended.

Basics:

More than anything, ATMOS is based on MLP and ceiling height. Not your L/R placement. The recommended placement is 45° up, and out, from MLP.

45° up, and out, from MLP (± is the recommended range)

But angles are hard and we don't have an easy way to measure them in real life. So what can we do? One of the most common mistakes I see here are people find out what 45° is and making a square from that measurement, when it should be a circle. For example 36" MLP height, 8' ceiling would make 45° = 5'. So what people will do is go forward and out 5' but that gives you an angle of 35.3°.

Measuring 5' Forward and 5' out from MLP will give you an angle of 35.3

If you can't use software to draw it out, an easy way to get really close is to look up the 55° numbers and use those. You can make a square from the 55° numbers to achieve a very close 45° ATMOS location. So using the same numbers as before if you look up 55° from a 36" MLP and 8' ceiling you get 3' 6". Go forward and out that amount will get you almost to the perfect location*. Just verify by measuring from where the MLP would be on the ceiling (center point) to the speaker location and you should have the 45° number (5' in this example).

\ 3' 6" right angle triangle would give a hypotenuse of 4' 11 7/16" so it is not exact, but the difference is negligible. A 15' ceiling would still be less than a 1 1/2" difference.)

55° square will give you almost exact 45° circle ATMOS location

Advanced:

45° is based on 0° Ear Level. The ideal angle for ATMOS is 45°+ (half the angle of 0° to your speaker ear level).

The following is recommended specs for front to back spacing if you can not achieve 0° Ear Level

  • FRONT: L/R/C ≤ 20°
  • Back: Rears ≤ 25°

And sides if not 0° Ear Level

  • Sides: Surrounds ≤ 20°

For example: If your Surrounds are 10° higher than ear level to fit over your couch, the optimal horizontal angle would be 45° + 5° = 50° from Ear Level. I'd recommend using software to figure out numbers at this point, but for home theater, more than likely if you just use the basic guidelines you'll be where you need to be anyway!

Enjoy your ATMOS!

Disclaimer: This is what I have learned over the last 4 months from researching here and other forums, watching videos and trying to sift through the information. If it doesn't sound right let me know, I'm learning too!

I have an avr that can hit 160-170 watts per channel. RX a6a

My towers limit is 140 watts. Elac DFR52

I was thinking capping the wattage with a 10% headroom would keep them safe.

What Im scared of is most audio content db's are within a reasonable range. But once in awhile a commercial or certain content feels like it increases by a 1/3 and I really don't want to blow my speakers up.

I would appreciate any insight!

I was wondering if anyone on here could give me a direction to try troubleshooting.

I recently purchased a house which came with a theater, and I can't figure out how to get the surround sound to properly work.

Currently I can get most of the speakers to work, hearing all of the background/suround sound input but not the primary audio. Basically when watching a movie I can hear all the sound effects but I'm not getting the audio of people talking.

No issues with picture.

Wanted to see if anyone had an idea on what to try in settings. So far I've gone through the basics of turning zones on and off and trying multiple sources, trying multiple HDMI ports. No obvious wiring issue.

Set up is as follows:

Projector: Epson 504UB

AVR: Denon AVR-X6300H

Speakers: 10 speaker Klipsch system

Input device: currently using a Nvidia shield pro, I've tried a PS4 and even a random fire TV with no change

Recently posted my setup and ended up returning all of the speakers (towers, center, and bookshelves). I realized all of this in my living room just wouldn't work. I pulled up pics of the living room the way the previous owners had it set up (I purchased my house back in September) and noticed he had a 3.1 setup. I remember seeing an older model Denon in the living room when I first viewed the property, so I knew the guy was into the hobby.

Link to older living room pics

The entertainment center was left behind and I've since then replaced the center TV stand with something nicer/modern. My dreams of running 5.1.2 seem to have ended (for now), but I just want to know if all I run is 3.1 will I still get a quality experience or should I at least look into getting a 3.1.2 setup?

Current Setup:

Denon X3700H

SVS PB-2000 Pro Subwoofer

KEF Q650CB Center

2x KEF Q350B Bookshelves

My couch can be at most 1’ off the rear wall and there is only 2' of space to the left and right before [reasons] prevent placing a speaker, and that speaker has to be close to the rear wall or on the rear wall (so slightly behind the listener).

What configuration should I try for?

  1. Technically I could do 5.1 with floor speakers at ear level 1' behind the couch and 1.5' from the leftmost and rightmost seating positions. I assume super annoying for those people to have a speaker surface less than 2' from their head, 3.1 is probably going to be better than that.
  2. Raise those speakers up higher on the wall, well above ear level, maybe all the way to the ceiling which is actually 10' high in this room. Now what are these speakers? Rear speakers? Surrounds? It's a good place for the speakers but what to call them?
  3. Just be happy with 3.1 and forget about it
  4. Skip the surrounds and mount some high top front speakers with a big front sound stage creating atmosphere.

Room details: couch will be 8' from the TV and a foot off the rear wall. Room is much wider, 20', but due to the locations of doors and windows and halls and other things I cannot put a speaker anywhere in the expected 5.1 positions to the left. There is no wall to the left either, it's a big window, no speaker is going there. To the right of the couch there's a wall about 3 feet away which would be perfect but on the left it cannot be done.

LCR are the older Klipsch RP5000F (cuz they are on sale) and maybe an older RP500C or RP404F or something else (another thread). I will invest in a good sub.

I don't expect perfect, I just want to make the best of the situation. There will be big audio challenges as the room isn't a regular shape (bay window left, open hallway to the right, etc) so I'm going to end up with nothing like a proper setup and I just want to make the best of it. If the best of 3.1 I'm ok. But can I do better?

I haven't bought the surround speakers yet, options would be RP500M's, RP402S or anything folks recommend in that under $500 price range (they're on sale). I could just buy nothing and call it a day

Need some ATMOS placement help from the collective if you have a minute for my home office. There seems to be a ton of conflicting information floating around on placement, angles, exc.

Attached are photos of my 5.1.2 that is in progress.

Question: Where the heck do I put the Atmos speakers. Should I do center or front Atmos, and further, would you mount one in the bulkhead then adjust output since it's closer?

TLDR; Help me place the ceiling channels please.

Gear:

Dimensions:

  • main seating position is 10 feet from front channels and TV
  • width of room is 12 feet. Height is 8'6". Bulkhead is 14" tall, 32" wide.
  • rear speakers are less than a foot above ear level, offset slightly behind seating

When setting up speakers to the recommended distance and angle, how are you measuring the angle? I figure the real answer is “math,” but wondering if anyone has an app or tool that works well enough. Anyone busting out the protractor or compass apps?

Could anyone help me pick some speakers for my setup. I have a Denon AVR-X3800H. I have a budget of $1500. I'm looking for 5.1 mostly due to living room size and constraints but could be influenced to go higher.

Edit 1: Adding Dimensions.

For context, this was an old garage that was converted into a living room. It is one big open area with hardwood floors (yes, I will be putting carpet down).

Total Area (Length x Width x Height)

  • 328" x 163" x 105"

Usable Area (Length x Width x Height)

  • 160" x 114" x 105"

Height View

Overhead View

Edit 2: I forgot to mention, the blue dots on the height view are speaker wire pre-ran in the wall. All of it comes back to the blue box in the bottom left corner.

I have about $1,000. I'm down to:

Samsung QN65Q80CAFXZA (looked the best at video only, plenty of bad reviews, mostly regarding poor blacks)

Tcl 65q650 or 750g (looked the best at best buy, people complain about the ui, customer service, app loading, viewing angle).

LG 65QNED80URA (looked second best, viewing angle and backlight are the main complaints).

Right now, the samsung is the leader because both Costco and best buy said they get the fewest returns from samsung buyers.

I hate this...

The current line of Sony projectors are the VPL-XW5000, 6000, and 7000.

It is my understanding that In the old days, there were problems with differences in the electrical used in different countries (110/220), the HZ (50/60), the shape and design of the plugs, and the video format differences such as PAL for Europe and NTSC for the U.S.

Is this still the case?

When looking at these Sony projectors, they all seem to have the designation regarding electrical that they will automatically switch between the systems depending on use. The plug would need an adaptor to plug in.

But what about content format issues? Are there still display issues between different countries? Or is that all in the past?

Your experiences in the this regards would be greatly appreciated!

Do AVR’s exist with a stereo fixed line out that can be used for recording purposes?

Normal preamps in AVR seem to be affected by the volume of the AVR. I’m looking for a line out that is fixed and not variable or affected by volume. I see some Pioneer and Onkyo AVR’s can set zones to fixed line out, but they limit the input sources to either be analog or 2 channel PCM.

Hello! I am having problems with a 20m (65ft) 8k certified cable, by Monoprice. I'm not sure what could be wrong. It only works inconsistently. I have it running from a Geforce 3080TI graphics card to a LG C3 TV. I needed the longer length to get through the walls. The cable direction is correct. I simply have no picture. Somehow I was able to get it to work last night for hours, but today no luck. The PC recognizes the device, but no signal is making it to the TV. Any ideas? Is there a setting in the Nvidia controls which would help?

Thanks to anyone with suggestions!

I have three speakers I want to hook up to my AV receiver (Sony STR-DH590), meaning I am using a 3.0 left, center, right system. My question is how do I set up my receiver and tv settings to make it work the way it should? Should I have it set to 5.1 or stereo? If I set it to 5.1 and I'm only using 3.0 will the receiver know that?

Hi! I started my journey a few months back with a Denon AVR-X2800, and two Monitor Audio Bronze 100s.

I live in a major metropolitan city so my living room is also my dining room and my kitchen and my office, so sadly it’s not really a full blown home theater. The space is about 20x12 or so. I do anticipate having more space in my next apartment but realistically it won’t be much more than that.

My budget is about $1,000 with a willingness to flex up to probably $1,500.

What would you all recommend for me? Any details I might have missed that would be helpful?

EDIT: My AV setup is the narrow part of the space as a heads up. I..e, I’m seated about 12 feet away from my set up.

Alright, I am fairly new to this so stick with me please haha. I bought the Multeq Editor app for my new Denon AVR-X1800H and Kef q350's. Set everything up. Went through the whole process. Go to send the data to my AVR and it says it failed to send all data to receiver and to power down and try again. The cycle continues. I can't seem to find much info online for some reason. Does anyone have experience with this?

Hello, I‘m searching for a good subwoofer for my 5.0 system. Should be available in Vienna Austria and the budget is maximum 500€, better would be around 300€.

My current system is: ELAC Dbr62 as front, Magnat c53 Center and for surround I have two decent but not high end self build bookshelf speakers which I build like 5 years ago. AVR: Denon x1700h. My room is around 13m2 and full of stuff. Does anyone know something good?
