Hey all,

TL;DR - is the AVR-2808 a good buy, despite its age? Are there any problems that I could encounter due to its age specifically (other than it dying, which isn't too much of a worry for me considering the price)

I've found a used Denon AVR-2808 which I can potentially get for under £50 to start off my home cinema setup. This is my first receiver purchase, so please excuse my limited knowledge!

There's little to no resources online about this receiver as it is very old (manufactured 2007 I believe) but, according to Crutchfield, the power rating is more than enough for what I need for my setup (110 watts x 7 into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.05% THD). I currently only have a 2.1 setup however with this receiver I have some other speakers that I plan to use to transform it into a 4.1/5.1 setup. The good thing is that this receiver gives me the option to expand to a 7.1 setup in the future. I'm not bothered about Atmos etc., so this so far seems like a good option for me.

On the video side is where I am slightly more confused. I've seen things online about HDCP, where, from my understanding, due to this receiver's age, the HDCP rating could cause issues with playback in newer formats/on newer devices. I get the concept of it but due to the lack of documentation online that I could find about it, are there any problems that could arise due to the receiver's age? The lack of HDMI ports as well as it only being HDMI 1.3 are not of a concern to me either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT - I also couldn't find any distinction online between the AVR-2808 (the model I am looking into buying) and the 2808CI (the one listed on Crutchfield), could anyone advise me of this?

Well the time finally came where all the home theater equipment had to be moved and speakers placed in mew areas. Current components are as follows: FR/FL: def tech BP7002 SR/Sl: def tech studio monitor 350 C: def tech CLR2002 Front sub: klipsch 12" down firing Back sub facing wall opp. corner of klipsh: svs pb-2000 Emotiva XPA gen 3 2.0: for the two towers Emotiva XPA-5: for the other 3 speakers Yamaha rx-v3900 4 port powered rca splitter box running LFE to both subs and front floor speakers

I went ahead and used the YPAO feature on the Yamaha and while the sound seems great the bass I used to have is not nearly that loud anymore. I would expect some good vibrations like before, especially with the svs being moved so the speaker and port faces the wall, about 2 feet away. Where am I going wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In my living room I have one Ikea Ectorp sofa (nr1.) under the wall with caffe table in front and another Ectorp sofa (nr2.) on opposite side.

When I tur on beamer. Hanging over sofa nr 2. Screen drive down on the wall behind sofa nr1. I have two normal speakers on the sides of sofa nr1. And 2 speakers on ceiling behind sofa nr2. But I'm missing bass. I can't put anything in front because of sofa nr 1. I have cables from subwoofer on each side of sofa just in case. Will it be better to have like 2 smaller sub subwoofers or one big one? Ore two big subwoofer on both sides? I have like 36cm width on both sides. Any cost-effective models for setup like that. I runn everything of Yamaha HTR - 5630RDS.

And I just have another idea. Can you put central fron speaker under sofa? This sofa have like 14cm clearance from floor. I could literally put central speaker on the flor or bolt it under sofa... It would be like 2 m in front of me and floor level in obviously. With caffe table in between speaker and sofa nr.2..

Is it making any sense? I could get some speaker for a test I think from a friend...

Guys, where would you place the subwoofer?

Currently it's on the left side (don't mind the turntable table and the cables, originally it was rotated 90° but when I bought the R800F's it won't fit anymore and I have to have it shortened :)

I'm thinking about moving the dog to the left and the tt table and subwoofer to the right for better access. Do you think there would be a difference in the sound as there is wall on the left and a large window on the right?

Thanks

As the title says. Any good Action, Sci Fi or Thriller type movies to watch? Got the place to myself tonight so I fancied popping on a few big screen movies. Recently watched Braveheart (again) but for the first time in 4k, goodness me they did a Stella job with that picture quality. I have a huge 150" 2.35:1 4K projector screen with Atmos too. Recommendations can be screen fillers at 4k or not. Dolby Atmos or not. If they are both then bonus. Just looking for some inspiration, can be old or new. Even hidden gems like The Account, surprisingly good that movie. Thanks in advance my fellow movie nuts!

Total noob question:

I'm only interested in stereo or eventually additional center speaker for dialog. Pretty much all blu-ray movies (from the disc or hard drive) have some variant of DTS audio.

Do I need AVR with support for DTS, DTS: HD, DTS:X etc if I don't want surround?

I guess I need good AVR with dolby vision support too. They often come with various DTS format support, but my question is what happens if my AVR doesn't support DTS X for example and movie is in DTS X? Will I still get sound even if AVR doesn't support that format, just in lesser quality?

Another question, if I don't want surround, do I need center speaker for dialogue or good stereo speakers should be ok?

I'm lost in all this, thanks in advance.

18 months ago I got what I thought was a bargain 65 inch Samsung. With hindsight, it was not such a good deal.... I could never get earc to work, and dark scenes were straight up unwatchable.

After some research, I've pulled the trigger on my first OLED, an LG G2.

I had been planning on upgrading my speakers first, but that's now taken a back seat.

Hopefully I've made the right call this time!

Hi All

So recently my AVR has been needing higher volume. In past, I've been happy with it in the 50-60% range, but recently that has crept up to the 60-70% range. Does this mean my receiver is in the process of dying?

Thanks!

Hello, I have an Onkyo TX-NR828 receiver I am using with my Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 3. From what I understand, this unit was fairly premium for it's time (2013-2017) and supports 4k and 1080p signals for its 7 HDMI ports.

I have the game consoles connected to the HDMI ports labeled for Game1 and Game2, and both consoles output at 1080p. Unfortunately, they are at 30hz when connected to the AV Receiver, when they should be at 60hz at 1080p. The HDMI cables definitely support 60hz, I have used them direct with the TV just fine - I don't know what version of HDMI (2.0, etc.) that they are certified for though.

(Not sure if this model has 4k/30hz or 4k/60hz for the record)

Would anyone know of a solution? I reset the unit today as I just set it up.Thank you.

Question: We just moved, and in our previous home I had 2 NHT C4 towers for the fronts, an NHT C LCR for the center, 2 NHT MA Satellites for the sides (Atmos), and 2 Def Tech Mythos Gem XLs (dipole) for the surrounds.

My new home will not allow for the NHT MS Satellites to work and They are almost up to the ceiling. I ended up upgrading to KEF R5 Metas for the front, KEF R2 Meta for the center, and 4 KEF R8 Metas for the sides and rears. I have a Denon AVR6300h that can’t support 11 channels.

My question is this: Atmos how I had it previously doesn’t work that well anymore, given doorways and room traffic and such. The best solution is another pair of KEF R8 Metas to sit a top of the 2 front KEF R5 Metas to bounce off the ceiling (which my Wife and I scraped all the “popcorn” off of when we moved in.

I wanted to see what the consensus was on placement for Atmos speakers and if I need to carve into the ceiling to get speakers there for the best sound. The room is 10.5 wide x 8.2 tall x 22.5 long. There are some outcrops for a couple of doorways so the dimensions are divisible (for those that understand that).

Any input is helpful.

Hey guys

This is a bit long, but i don't want to leave out any details! Thanks in advance for any help!

So I have my PC hooked up to my TV via an HDMI 8k cable (im running at 4k 120hz, I have an Nvida 4080) to HDMI 4 on the TV (Model is an LG 86up8050pvb, quite a new model) which is an 4k 120hz port, then HDMI 3 (an eARC port) back to my amp (Yamaha RX-V685).

So i'm not getting any audio, but if i plug my PS5 into the same HDMI 4, it passes audio fine back to the amp.

I read that it may be as simple as changing the audio quality to make it work, but I have not had any luck doing so. I can get audio to come out at the TV is i select "TV Audio" as the speakers on the TV.

Any ideas on what i might be missing? A friend said one solution would be get a DP to HDMI cable, and go from the DP port on the GPU to the amp, but it would need to be set as an extra display on my PC.

My amp does not support 4k 120 passthrough, that's why i'm going from my PC direct to my TV. I could rant about how when I purchased the amp, Yamaha said it would support 4k 120 with a firmware update, but that never happened!

I hope that is enough info!

Happy new year!

The bracket on the TV is from an old stand it was on and I'll remove it but the tv mount plate is too small. Is there an X adapter I can get?

In the middle of upgrades, next on the list is a new projector and screen. I'm running a 140" 16:9 currently. We only watch movies here so I'm leaving a lot of screen on the table unused most of the time. I'm thinking of moving to a 142" 2.35:1 but in order to do it I'll have to mount the projector further back in the room and off center due to a post.

I'm not sure my need for symmetry will let me do that! Anyone else had to make OCD sacrifices? lol
