Have my Samsung TV QN65 ( I think its 2021) to Pioneer VSX-524, via high speed HDMI cable ARC connection.

Audio works, but I only get stereo. No real surround sound. Testing it with Netflix.

Farting around with it for a while and I can't seem to get it to work.

Any ideas? Thanks

It can't decide what scale the UI should be, rescaling the UI with shortcut buttons (ctrl+ +/-) only works for making it smaller, making the window bigger has the inverse affect on the UI/text, it wont recognize when my device is plugged in half the time, it wont load PEQ files that are almost identical to the ones I successfully loaded 14 seconds ago, I couldn't download the software from the website unless I used the login information of the person who bought this as a gift for me...

This is all within the first 90 minutes of attempting to use this to EQ my 2 subs using a very well paced YouTube video series (shoutout to Home Theater Gamer! )

Also, unrelated to the software, not having a laptop for this process is a NIGHTMARE! I had to break out 3 different USB extensions, my longest HDMI cable, a random regular extension cord to accommodate my RCA plugs that worked well for the subs in their locations, and a new 20' RCA cable for the DSP. If I were hungry, I'd have plenty of spaghetti to go around.

Please tell me that after the right PEQ is loaded into the MiniDSP it doesn't need to be plugged in to my computer...

I have what is probably a very odd setup.

Speakers are JBL performance series. They were enigmas back in the day because they were never marketed appropriately. But absolutely love them. I have the PT800 3 way (distant cousins of the Revel Gem2), the PC600 center, and the P520SW surrounds.

I have been running an HK AVR 630 for many many years and it is has been an incredible unit that has outlasted an upper tier Marantz (in longevity and performance). However, I recently decided to upgrade to an Anthem MRX 540 but haven’t received it yet.

Bravia XBR 75” TV and UXP700 BR player, not that it matters. The “theater area” is probably 15x15 but it is a subset of a larger open finished basement that is probably 1000sf+.

Sadly, I have always paired this with an Infinity PS12. But no more….hence my dilemma.

I would like to get a single SW that can satisfy both music and HT. Probably about 50/50.

Am thinking Rhythmik FVX15….but am a clean slate really because I don’t know shit…..and after seemingly 80 hours of research, I still don’t!

SUGGESTIONS?!

I’m looking for some advice & expertise on a new tv. I have an upstairs loft area that is about 10ft by 10ft. I want to make this a little man cave to stream my favorite sports (often espn app or fox sports) and play games in.

I had pretty much decided I wanted the Sony X90L 85in for $2199. But when I measured I started to think maybe that was too big for the space and online sources say I should be in that 65in-75in range for that room size (couch to tv is about 8ft).

Anyway now I’m second guessing as I really wanted an 85in and now moving to the 75 range I see a crazy deal on the 77in Samsung S89C (which allegedly is the same as S90C)the OLED & overall ratings for gaming seem like the better tv for my PC & PS5 however I was sold on Sony bc of the upscaling for sports streaming and every review I read raving about this tv.

Just curious if anyone with knowledge would weigh in with their opinion on which route they would take (or other) considering how I would be using it.

I’m not expert. I could be missing something critical to understanding. I hear about “0 db” and specifically sound mixers tweaking the sound mix for 0 db as a reference.

If this is the same as the numbers on my Denon (and this goes for several different models over the years) I can’t imagine turning it up to 0 db. My starting volume is -40. If it’s late at night I can comfortably listen to stuff I’m halfway watching at -50 or -55.

If I’m very “dialed in” for prime time family movie night, I might have it at -35. I don’t think I’ve ever had the volume higher than -30.

Should I be listening at 0 db? I feel like that would make me deaf. Do I need to set the system to 0 db and redo the Audyssey calibration? Or is there something else going on here where -30 to -40 seems normal to others?

I have a ps5 & lg k90, connected straight to x90j then to 790AVR through EARC. My wandavision on ps5 outputs DTHD (it's set for atmos output), that same disc in the K90 outputs atmos.

Do you have any idea why?

So I've had an old onkyo tx717 and some definitive tech 5.1 in a box prior. Sounded good but just lacking overall depth especially center channel.

Took some advice from on here to upgrade to floor speakers and full size center. Got some svs ultra floors and uktra center used and a new denon 3800 and finally got around to setting it all up today.

Wasn't able to do the auddesey correcting but overall I'm really let down. It doesn't sound all that different from my old setup. I was finally able to troubleshoot my small woofer with the new reciever so that was nice and next in the list to replace, but overall I've spent a good chunk of change, nearly got in a martial fight over how big the speakers were before and how my new ones are massive yet they will be glorious... and here i stand wondering was she really right.

My next plan was to fix the sub... and then replace the rears and surrounds to match the other ultras... but honestly if they are this lackluster I may just go back to my old setup. Any help here thanks

Hey everyone… I am building a house with a 11x16 media room and the builder is asking if I need 7.1 setup in the ceiling of the media room with built in speakers. All the pics and setup I see here are speakers on the floor.

I am a newbie and understand that wired is better than WiFi speakers. But have a few basic questions. Thanks in advance for your help

  1. For my room size, is 5.1 better than 7.1?
  2. Should the speaker wires be in the ceiling?
  3. Should I ask the for the wires to be in the wall so I can have ground or wall mounted speakers?
  4. If I get the setup on the ceiling, should I just get the speakers as well. Total cost for klipsch speakers comes to 5000 for 7.1

Thanks

So I have a denon with the multi eq audyssey but I can’t get it to sound just right. There are lots of other options besides the eq as well such as dynamic volume and the low pass filter. How do you get “better” at tuning a system, somewhat objectively.

I’ve had my Energy Take Classic 5.1 for close to 10 years, they sound great for what they are, and I like their small size. But, I’m considering upgrading and I’m a bit out of the loop regarding speakers / subs.

Any recommendations for a similar style speaker / sub that would be a bit of an upgrade? I’m using a Denon S760 to power the Energy’s.

Thank you.

I will be buying my first new home theater equipment after years of soundbars and a logitech z5500. I renovated the basement and left audio wires to the places where the speakers are going, although i never though of going .4 in the setup. I was planning on getting the following for a 5.1.2 setup: Polk xt70 for fronts with xt90 for front atmos Xt35 for center Xt20 for rear Hts12 for sub(although here i might look at similar priced options if they are worth it) For avr: Denon AVR-X1800 I will be buying it all before june. My main enjoyment for this setup will be movies and tv shows. Gaming at times(xbox series x) Half of my movie collection is in 4k.

Considering the equipment chosen, would you recommend anything different at the same price? Much appreciated for.your input

Hey /HT,

I have a 5.2.4 setup currently using the Jamo S809 bundle for 5.0 and powered by a Denon x4700h. I'm ready for my first upgrade and ordered the THX-460t towers and a 365c center, plan to also pick up 265bs in the future for surrounds.

As these speakers are rated at 4ohm and seem to dip to 3ohm, would a budget external amp be beneficial? I know the big Monolith X3/X5 amps would be an upgrade but that's outside of my current budget, so I'm mainly considering the Monolith M5100X with 135wpc@4ohm.

Besides reducing the heat levels in the AVR, would there be any auditory benefit to adding a M5100X with my X4700h?

Thanks!

Hi, well the other day I decided to remove the covers on my 35 year old D3's, and lo...they were both in bad shape. Haven't even checked to see if the crossover is still working.

Anyway, similar speakers are getting pretty expensive. So my question is what would you replace them with without breaking the bank? In the $500.00 to $1000.00 range. Or should I just replace the speakers and crossovers? I have a 5.1 Yamaha vx 475 amplifier. Are studio monitors a good or bad application? Could I use an Alto PA speaker?

Thanks in advance

I recently purchased a set of Focal Theva n1, JL d110 sub and a Denon x1700h for my HT setup. I am also using a pair of Sony satellite speakers for surrounds and center. They were left over pieces from my first ever 3.1 system over 10 years ago. I am loving the Focal's. They are the best speakers I have ever owned. However, I am starting to feel that the satelite speakers I have are doing a disservice next to the Theva's. I have been using the Dynamic Volume setting on light and it seems to do a great a job at compensating the volume on detail and surround effects. However, I do feel like it somewhat neuters the bass. With Dynamic Vol. off, the bass is super responsive and palpable. And when I set DV on "light" it cuts the bass for some reason and turning it up really only effects the higher and louder bass like exploxions and not so much lower bass, like a background thump. For example, I was watching Altered Carbon with DV off and when the main character walks by the entrance of a club, you could hear the bass thump deep and low but the background noises and surround effects would be muted. And, when i turn on Dynamic Volume to light, the bass seems to be cut in half where it sounds like the bass is being routed to the Theva's which arent great at reproducing low bass notes. The "light" setting brings background effects and details to life but it seems to be at the cost of bass. Is this a crossover issue? Or is there a way to replicate Dynamic Volume light setting to bring up surround effects without actually enabling it.

Or is this an issue that would primarily be solved by higher quality surrounds?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I am new to home theater but am eager to learn.

Thanks!

Edit: ended up getting a replacement Audessey mic and the room correction soft fixed the issue. Turned the levels on mains down and increased surrounds set at 120hz.

Audessey is basically magic , didn’t think it would work but yeh it definitely does!

So here is the soundbar I currently have:

I've been quite happy with this unit, but I know that once I have a larger living space and more budget it will be time to move on to greener pastures.

I'd like to get a general sense of what I have to look forward to/save up for in future.

Me living on my own is quite a ways off, but me and my family are looking to move to a different state and we'll be actively looking for properties with more than one master bedroom. We'd also be buying versus renting, so the option to go full on home theater might be sooner than I think.

Just to quickly give insight into my situation, my entertainment is split about 70%/30% in favor of video games versus movies/TV if you go by sheer hours in a given day. Everything I do currently is through the Xbox, and the TV is just a TV.

I don't have any desire to change that or buy a standalone Blu Ray player unless absolutely necessary, so whatever home theater setup I get needs to be compatible with a gaming console.

Side note: my biggest complaint with the bar is that if our WiFi router is too close to it, the subwoofer cuts out constantly. If the router is far enough away for the sub to function perfectly, it smothers any WiFI signal trying to come in, and my phone gets 60mbps on a gigabit internet plan. I've heard having a wired sub would eliminate that issue, but you would know better than I whether that's always the case.

Will be interested to hear how much work I have cut out for me.

Sorry to vent here, but i really hope i can help people in the future make better decisions then i did.

In the fall of 2017 i had an Epson 6040ub professionally installed, in my ceiling. With a fiber optic HDMI cable and an SI ALR screen.

A year later the power supply died, replaced under warranty

A year later the color started to go (big pink blotches), replaced under warranty

A year later i started getting red lines across my screen, projector was out of warranty, but my installer managed to politik with epson customer service to get me one last projector. This one didn't balance colors properly (slight red tint on the right side), and if it wasn't such a hassle to get it replaced i would have called again.

Just now, HDMI1 failed, and i'm stuck at 1080p on HDMI2. i'm way out of warranty now.

when I spent thousands on this thing 6 years ago, i expected it to last 10 years or more. If i knew back then what i know now, i would have bought a big TV instead of a projector + screen + wiring + install. It looks like I'll probably be replacing it with a Sony projector later this year. I'm incredibly disappointed, and I won't buy an Epson product again. I hope others can learn from this struggle.
