Hi everyone,

I would like to make my first home-theater setup, however I am still in a rented apartment so I obviously can't put speakers into the walls nor ceiling, nor can I put wires through walls. Although, I can drill some holes for mounts.

Therefore, my questions are:

  1. Would it be okay to buy a bigger carpet and drag wires underneath it?
  2. I assume I can mount overhead speakers either on the ceiling or high up on the wall and position accordingly.
    1. However, do I need special over head speakers for this or any satellite speaker or even an upfiring speaker positioned correctly would do the job?

Cheers

Hi,

I’m looking for shoppings advices for a particular setup.

Use case: I’d like to gather all my HDMI devices into 1 output because I have too many devices to plug into TV.

Constraints:

  • I have 6+ devices
  • They work with different HDMI standards up to 4K/144Hz (for gaming). It must support 4K/144Hz.
  • I have SONOS devices but I think I can directly use the HDMI eARC port from TV even with a hub/AVR
  • I’d like to spend the least possible money considering it will be only used as a HDMI hub

I’ve been looking for HDMI hubs with 6+ devices but seems not to exist. I’ve recently looked at AVR to use it as a « fancy HDMI hub ».

Hence, could you recommend hardware considering the constraints please?

Thanks in advance and sorry if I’ve made mistakes, I’m totally new to this kind of hardware :)

Important notice: I kindly require your advices because I’ve been googling it for a long time and trust me, finding a good AVR or HDMI hub/switch with my constraints is really tricky

Currently have a Svs pb1000pro and find it lacking for my room size. Rooms around 2200 cubic feet. I'll be adding a second sub at a later date but I'm currently looking for deeper sound not room correction. Here in Canada both the svs and the klipsch are $1850. Just wondering what you guys think.

Set up Monitor audio bronze 500s Monitor audio bronze c150 and 50s as center and surrounds Pioneer Lx-305 Svs pb1000pro

Hi everyone, has anyone had experience with MORDAUNT-SHORT?

I discovered a local Hi-Fi shop is clearing out their leftover stock from 2023 and is selling

Premiere 5.0 Speakers for 199€. Original price they state 499€.

Is it a good set of speakers worth for the discounted price?

I am about to buy a TV and build my first hometheater setup and am currently on the search for something that won't break my wallet, and it's either some budget set-up like this or a 5.1 soundbar.

Cheers.

I am a complete beginner, and this is my first setup.

The room is 12,4*14,4 (h=7,2) and I have a LG 77 G3. My usage consists of 40% 4K Blu-ray, 40% streaming, and 20% gaming. I have a lot of questions about the sound system.

What, in your opinion, is the best approach for this small dedicated room? Floor-standing or bookshelf speakers ? Is a center speaker necessary?

I was thinking of going with 2 front speakers, 1 center speaker, 2 surrounds, and 1 subwoofer. Do you think this is a good idea or not suitable for this setup?

As for acoustic treatment, do I need to place acoustic panels on the side and rear walls?

I have a budget of $2,000 to $2,500 for the entire system (I don't have an amplifier), is it enough to have something decent ?

Thank you for any advice and opinions you can give me.

Hello everyone,

On my Denon xh1700 the source auto switch doesn't work properly. For example, I'm on HDMI 1 Nvidia Shield, then I turn on my Xbox (HDMI 3). then the HDMI port does not change automatically. Is there something wrong here?

One night I was playing thunderstruck by AC/DC super loud and my receiver turned off for about five seconds and I heard two clicks and it turned back on and I immediately turned the volume down as to not damage anything. I am aware that this happens on cheaper receivers or amplifiers but why did this happen on mine? is it because of the speakers I have hooked up to it? Is it a feature to protect the amplifier Or speakers?

New receiver causing popping/static in center speaker with 360 Spatial mapping on.

I bought a new Sony AN-1000 receiver because I’ve heard good things about to the spatial mapping. After playing with it, I can fully say it lives up to the praise and is something I like with the soundstage improving dramatically.

However whenever enabled it causes static from the center output. This happened on 2 of these I’ve received now and happened on my cousins speakers as well.

My question I came here to ask is this a known issue? I don’t see any mention anywhere on the internet except one person complaining about this and a few other problems on this receiver. All the reviews mention nothing. Did I just get unlucky twice or should I look for a higher end model?

here’s a video of it happening. It goes away mostly when the spatial feature is off however is still faint. Also using pure direct gets rid of the popping completely.

I have a current 5.1 surround system. I am using 20 year old Mission tower speakers, center and rear and an old powered 12" mission sub. 5.1 setup.

I wanted to get a earc receiver so I can just run a single HDMI out of my TV to my receiver and get good sound etc. I run a plex server and predominatly watch movies off there OR off netflix/streaming on my TV.

I cant find a used earc receiver for less than $250. I am wondering if I should just go with a 4k receiver I should be able to find for about $150 but will probably not support atmos or anything recent and buy a NVidea shield to go into the receiver then use passthrough to the TV.

Side note will I notice much of a difference in updating these old speakers? Is there a good to guide for a quality 5.1 used system to go after?

Thanks

To transform from 3.0 (2 Eltax Monitor 3 + center) to 5.1.2, I'll start by adding surrounds : what would you buy when :

  • The sofa is stuck to the wall (and surround speakers must be mounted on this wall, not too far from the sofa)

  • Wife wants something way smaller than an Eltax Monitor 3 ( Dimensions W x H x D: 195 x 300 x 230 mm)

  • targetting best price for value

?

Thanks

I have a Pioneer VSX-534 and have recently acquired a pair of Polk LSiM703 bookshelf speakers. They’ve proven a little too power hungry for the onboard amp of the VSX-534 unless I risk blowing it up, so I plan to get an amp to help power them. To that end, I’m thinking my best play is to get an amp and use RCA to hook it up to the Zone B line out on the Pioneer unit. Would that work for me to then hook my speakers to the amp?

I recently bought the Sony x93L TV and connected it through my existing Denon 4700 avr. Since I almost exclusively stream my content through my ATV4K or play 4k BRD I had no need to test the TV apps playing from the Sony TV. Today I wanted to check out the Bravia Core app and watch a movie. However to my surprise I could not output any sound through my Denon avr. This is the case for all the apps on the TV. When I switched the TV back to internal speakers it plays but will not when switched to to Sound System in the Sony. I went through all the settings and checked the troubleshooting for no sound in the Sony documentation but nothing seems to work. I also checked to ensure my HDMI control was on in the Denon. Both my external ATV4K and Sony 4k BRD have no issues when I select the corresponding input on the Denon. My HDMI input to the TV is eARC (3) and to the eARC output on the Denon (1).

When I attempt to add the Denon as an external device to the TV through the Sony settings no sound plays and it fails. Also when I looked at the list of Bravia Sync approved devices they were all Sony. I find it unbelievable you cannot send sound from the Sony TV (apps) to the Denon avr via the connected HDMI cable. Surely this cannot be a unique application or does Sony just not allow you to play back through to any avr except their own?

My Sony TV Audio output settings are:

Speakers - Audio System eARC - ON Digital Audio Out - PCM (or Auto 1, neither worked)

Digital Audio Out Volume - max Pass through Mode (On or Off makes no difference).

Thank you for helping me solve this frustrating issue!

I have a PS5, a Hisense L9G projector, and a Harman Kardon 1565 AVR unit. I can not get the Dolby or DTS 5.1 audio to get from the PS5 to the AVR with the projector set to Passthrough, even though these audio formats are both supported by the AVR and can supposedly be transmitted by ARC.

Some background that may be helpful (I'm not a home theater buff, apologies if my terminology is incorrect in my explanation):

  • The AVR unit, with wired 5.1 speakers that came with my house (I believe the speakers came with the unit originally). It worked fine with my 1080p TV with only one minor issue, the unit only lets you select Dolby P2 or Logic surround modes (that I believe are both used to upscale stereo sound to 5.1) and the other settings (LPCM, PCM, Dolby, DTS) need to be "sensed" by the unit to become activated. That generally worked fine, except when dealing with the Nintendo Switch. It only uses LPCM but does so in an odd way, I think the way the sound is transmitted causes the receiver to think it is getting stereo sound format if the Center/Surround/LFE channels aren't sending distinct sound at the time of connection, which eventually leads to the other channels being simply ignored from that point forward (very noticeable on some games that only use the center channel for cut scene dialogue). The solution is annoying but simple, change to a different HDMI source and switch back to the Switch source when there is a distinct signal from the other channels (such as the surround sound test in the options) and it will register the correct surround mode for the rest of the session until the switch/AVR/TV is turned off.
  • A year ago I got the Hisense L9G projector that has 4k, which the old AVR does not support. I now plug my 4k devices into the AVR, my older devices like the Switch stay plugged into the AVR, and the ARC audio connection back to the AVR seemed to work fine. Sometimes you need to switch inputs back and forth for the unit to properly register whether it is running audio from one of the inputs or from ARC, and it also will sometimes not allow volume controllers from the projector remote or devices plugged into the projector to move the volume past arbitrary and random increments but no major issues, audio delays, or anything like that.
  • Last week I bought a PS5 and now I'm running into issues. The only option I can select that actually gives surround sound is setting both the PS5 and the projector to Dolby, but this introduces a significant audio lag. Researching this shows that the delay comes from the projector processing the audio to be synced, then the audio being processed again by the AVR and being delayed. I have no syncing/delay options on any of the three devices to fix this. A google search says that selecting passthrough on the projector and PCM on the PS5 fixes this issue for most people, but I have ARC and not eARC on the AVR. I understand that ARC passthrough will not get PCM sound from the PS5 to the AVR without downscaling it to stereo, so this doesn't work for me. I just don't understand why the Dolby option doesn't work (seems to send as a stereo signal) not the DTS option (doesn't send at all, which I'm guessing is because the projector doesn't have a DTS option but I didn't think that would matter if it's set to passthrough).

What are my options here? Obviously I could buy a new AVR unit, and I'd be open to suggestions on one. I won't be adding additional speakers in the future, and honestly won't be able to tell the difference between a good and a great unit, I simply want the devices to connect the way they are supposed to and I want the surround sound to actually come out of the correct speakers. Is the Denon AVRS570BT a good choice with that in mind, or given the quality of my existing speakers am I better to go with something cheaper/older/simpler?

My research online shows two other cheaper options could work, but I don't want to buy anything without knowing it will actually do the trick (in theory it would, but in theory the dolby passthrough should also work so obviously I'm not understanding something). First option is to use an optical audio connection between the projector and the AVR, which apparently can provide 5.1 dolby as well but I can't imagine this would work if the ARC passthrough didn't. The other option is to buy an HDMI extractor, have the PS5 output to the extractor, have the video sent to the projector and the sound send to the AVR by optical connection. I think this would work because I'd be eliminating the audio being processed twice. Would there be any issues with the video quality? I have an old HDMI splitter, I tried to use that and it initially worked to get the surround sound directly from the PS5 to the AVR but it didn't seem to keep the video at 4k and after shutting the PS5 off and using it again the next day, it would default to just connecting the video through the AVR in addition to the audio, and ignore the direct connection to the projector.
