Hi, I have a Bose 900 Dolby Atmos soundbar with a Bose Bass Module 700 and two Bose Surround Speakers.

I have the surround speakers set up on living room end tables on either side of the viewing sofa.

The sound coming from the surround speakers is very faint and even using the Bose app and setting them at 100%, sound is barely heard.

Is this normal, or should I be able to crank up the surround speakers?

If this is normal, are there other systems out there that have better surround speakers that can be cranked up?

Thanks in advance for the info!

I'm slowly starting a home theater setup. A few months ago I just jumped the gun and I got the Denon AVR-X3800H first, and would get speakers later. I'm now looking for some speakers to go with it. I currently have no speakers for the AVR. I figured ti go ahead and snag a good AVR while it was cheaper and since it could handle room to grow for a beginner. I'm hoping i didn't start too deep in the water lol.

I live in an apartment on the 3rd floor, the walls and floor is decent, but i can hear people yelling if its quiet though. for a sense of how thin my walls are. I plan on setting it up in my living room

Rooms dimensions:

my living room is 13ft L by 17ft W by 7ft9" H .

Id be sitting about 8ft from the front speakers, there is 3ft space behind from sitting and about 8ft to the left and about 3 ft from the right of available space for surround speakers.

As a beginner in home theater and sound terminology and whatnot, there's a handful of brands and speakers to choose from.

Im looking for a 5:1:2 or a 7:1:2 setup or what other recommendations for my environment.

TLDR: Just looking for some recommended speakers for dolby atmos/DTS:X to start out with for a Denon AVR-X3800H in an apartment. Budget is $1100 max.

Thanks in advance!

I have a Sony X90L paired to an old Pioneer VSX-523 Receiver. As this receiver does not support 4K, it’s necessary to use ARC or Optical for Audio and have the ATV directly connected to TV HDMI. I am having persistent, but intermittent issues with the audio signal. I have tried a few options:

  • Audio through HDMI ARC (AVR > ARC port (HDMI3), ATV > HDMI2.

This works great, for a bit. Audio signal is good but will cut in and out at random. Sometimes for two seconds, sometimes for hours.
* ```
Audio through Optical (Optical out on TV > Optical In on AVR)

This works if the Audio settings on the TV are set to PCM. If it’s not PCM, it will stutter terribly. However even this is not reliable – it would cut out and default back to TV speakers. I am also having trouble getting the AVR to default to Optical and it often is looking for audio via HDMI on this input setting.

I have tried every possible combination of settings for audio format, surround vs direct, dolby vs stereo, A/V Sync, eARC mode, Audio System Prioritization, TV center speaker mode, and sound mode sync. Nothing seems to consistently work. I have found some Sony documentation RE: ARC or CEC issues that recommend a factory reset or unplugging and power cycling everything each time. Since it happens so frequently and even this does not always solve it, not much of a fix.

I am ready to lose my mind over this. I have given in and ordered a new Denon S570BT that I am praying will solve the issue. My thinking is that by avoiding the need to split out Audio from Video I will simplify the communication between AVR and TV. I will be able to plug all inputs (ATV, PS4, BluRay player, etc) directly into the AVR, and AVR Out to HDMI In on the TV.

Should this work? Has anyone else had similar issues and found a resolution?

Hello ! I want to buy a bluetooth speaker that handles small parties as well (i’m a bedroom dj) I have a budget of ~€700 and doing sone research online I have came up with 2 options JBL Party Box 710 and EON one compact. I was so convinced with the 710 but it’s too flashy and toy like the alternative is Sony SRS XV 800 but it’s not as potent as the 710 and then I came up with EON with cleaner look. which should I get ? I am open to suggestions too.

Hello! I recently moved into a rental house that has speakers in the living room ceiling and these audio cables coming out of the wall, corresponding to the speakers. Is there a particular (relatively inexpensive) AV receiver or other device I could use to connect the speakers to my smart tv? I would love to take advantage of the speakers if I can. Thanks!

Hello folks!

I wondered if there was a "best way" to set up my system to avoid audio/video sync issues (you know - where it's just slightly off and the movie looks like it's been dubbed even though it hasn't been).

I currently have my 4K Blu-ray player (Sony UBPX800M2) going to my receiver (Sony STR-DH790) which goes to my TV (Sony 65X90CJ).

Occasionally, we will be watching a 4K movie and notice that the audio is slightly off - enough to be annoying. Is there a way to fight this? Should I plug the Blu-ray player into the TV and let ARC take care of the rest?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks and have a great day

Hi,

I had them in a box for years. Installed them recently and the sound is good enough for what I need.

The main problem is the player. It's very slow, jugos on youtuve videos etc. Is there any other player compatible that I might use with upgraded features?

Thanks

Currently running 2.1 setup with 2 rear speakers not being used. I want to use the rear speakers to my amplifier - Sony - STRDH590.

Here is the problem, the back wall where I want to put them has a roof pitch so great, plus insultation that it prevents me from running wires. And to make things more complicated, the "TV side" where I'd run the additional speaker wires has the house AC unit on top of it.

I've started looking around without much success but looking for something that I can connect my back speakers to the amplifier wirelessly and have 4.1 sound. Everything I've found is basically a wireless amplifier to connect my phone through Bluetooth.

Recently decided to upgrade my soundbar to a 5.1 sound system, and purchased a Denon AVR-X1800H. I was looking at speakers (was hoping to spend less than $1,000 CAD) and found a used seller in my city selling some PSB speakers that are refurbished unopened in box, but 20 or so years old. I did some quick searching and looks like PSB makes good speakers (was worried it was a white van speaker set, never heard of the brand), but should I be focusing on newer speakers?

The price would be $800 CAD for the whole set and includes a PSB Sub Series125, pair of Alpha B1 Bookshelf speakers, a pair of Stratus mini speakers (those seem to be the bulk of the price, 400 for the pair), and a center Stratus C6i. Thanks in advance!

Figured id cross post this here from the AVS forum as thats were the pictures are:

Setting up a 5.2.4 system for a new projector screen in our living area. We do not have a TV and this will be used for night time movie viewing only. (But overall speaker use will be mix of music and movies - I may utilize the back L/R speakers as a stereo setup with the sub, and switch them over before movie viewing as its a better location for music in this space i feel. Surround and Atmos music mastering is becoming a thing but not sure it makes since in this layout.) The C channel will be "portable", ill be moving it from the white cabinet top each time we watch a movie. The L channel will most likely be mounted on the wall to the right of the 2 white picture shelves. (Which will most likely cause issues with rear ported speakers?) The R front channel will most likely go on a very minimalist stand mount or wall mounted to the right. It will be VERY close to the side wall as the projector screen comes over to where the heat pump ends. (I may purchase a acoustically transparent screen and then just move them onto stands behind the screen each time. Its alot of setup each time but we only watch movies maybe once a week.)

Rear L/R will be a bookshelf setup on a minimalist stands. Trying to get everything to blend in with the current furniture layout (would rather not wall mount if possible. The speakers will also be the ones I may use on a stereo setup for music when the surround is not needed. This location should project into the house better.

Atmos L channels would probably go on the 1st floor edge below the railing mounted to the lip. Atmos R channel either on the cathedral ceiling or wall mounted? Not sure how "overhead" these channels should be. Currently we have experimented with JBL 1300X and Samsung 990c soundbars. The 990C ill be testing next week the JBL is getting sent back. I do not care for the Music out put. I feel like the midrange is lacking. Base is heavy with the subwoofer but to low end ultimately. The 990C is supposed to have a better music listening experience from what ive researched. (its also cheaper at ~$800)

Receiver will probably be the Pioneer 305 or Onkyo 7100. Pioneer is currently 549.99 onkyo is 599.99. However the Pioneer 505 has hit $699 with extended warranty included. However I do not think I really need the pre-outs or any of the added benefits from it?

Will probably use one of the Zone outs to push music into the sunroom area we have visible in the distance in the photos.

Currently have found the following used: Ascends Seirra-1 (LCR), Ascend 340SE v1 (LCR), Ascend 200 and 170s. All around $150 a speaker. Also looking at RLS as they have front ports. People also speak of the Chanes (new model coming out soon?) and HTD level 3s. Im really open for any recommendations but generally do used for the added value. Ofc Klipsch etc can have blow out sales that make it worthwhile.

Probably will have a 2 subwoofer setup. Still debating ported or sealed. Not 100% sure on where the sub placement will be.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I feel ive spent more time then I should research all the ins and outs. Without actually listening to anything.

Viewing distance is around 10-13'

How much of a pain is it to redo the Dirac room correction if im moving speakers back and fourth for setup?

I want to run mutiroom, multi source audio in my house from my server room (CPU, DVD/Bluray, etc), but not sure how to do it with a home theater set up. Ideally, Rm 2 and 3 would have 2 speakers, while the bathroom has 1, and the media center has surround sound (5.1). I want to wire everything with in-wall speakers.

I was thinking of using a Abus Channel Vision but its old tech and I don't think I can pull the surround sound off of it. The only other option someone suggested was to go with a multi amp set-up but I don't really understand how that works.

Any suggestions on how to go about wiring this or a system that would work for me? I`ve had Sono recommended to me, but I don't want to go wireless.

(Room 1) Home theater - 5.1 surround. (2 rear, 2 front, 1 center and a sub)

(Room 2) Living room - 1-2 speakers

(Room 3) Home gym - 1-2 speakers

(Room 4) Bathroom - 1 speaker (IP56 rated)

So currently I have an Onkyo HT-R398 and it works totally fine, but I'd like to get something a little better

The reason I say used is I really don't wanna spend much on it, given this one still works, so trying not to spend too much more than $200, maybe $300

I like Onkyo and their software so I'd prefer to stick with them

Looking for at least 7.x so I can eventually add height channels, but a 9.x would be awesome too

WiFi would be a nice feature and having things like Spotify build in would be awesome as well, otherwise it at least needs to have bluetooth

Ofc needs to be capable of 4k, 120hz, HDR10, all that good stuff

Not sure if there's much else I'd need, so any suggestions would be welcome

Thanks!

I bought my dad an outdoor bluetooth-enabled speaker for Christmas. I just went to his house to help install only to realize I have no idea what I'm doing. I thought it would be a simple plug-in to AC power outlet and connect to BLE. Nope.

I'm looking for a complete list of recommended products (and links) for his 10x12 ft 3-season room. From my research I think I need (2) small mountable speakers, a receiver/amplifier, and some wiring. I'm trying to keep the whole project to under $200 if possible. He's not picky, just wants something that works.

Can you jailbreak a player to become region free? I am looking at 4k players and want one device that can do it all. My wife likes foreign films which is my reasoning. Was wondering if I can just remove the region lock. Seen others suggest having two players but that just seems silly to me.

I think I've narrowed it down to these 3 based on sale/used prices. Is there any extreme shortcoming I should be aware of? Note: I will never exceed 5.1 or 5.2. I will likely be using EARC. I think I heard the s670h doesn't have the same quality of room correction? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Hey everyone, I was graciously gifted a pair of KEF Reference 1s and a Bijou 600 amp from a relative, but I need some help if that's ok to ensure these things don't go to waste.

My current setup:

  • Samsung QN90B 75"
  • Denon 1913 AVR (quite old but half decent power)
  • Klipsch R50m for surround
  • Klipsch RC62 II center
  • PS5 for 4k movies, plan to upgrade later

As mentioned, I now have the bijou 600 which is not yet hooked up and the KEFs are my Front LR speakers. They sound literally amazing compared to anything I've ever had but I know I could do more.

I have my PS5 plugged into the TV and an optical cable running to the Denon 1913, which has no 4k processing power so is just a Dolby processor etc.

I run 50/50 movies and music, with current source of music the TVs Spotify app (I have premium fwiw).

My questions are:

  • at a high lvl, how best can I optimize this system? I'm not currently using the Bijou 600 because my AVR doesn't have preouts so I'm considering my options (cheaper modern AVR with preouts, used Marantz Slim Line etc?)
  • by using the optical out on the Samsung, what am I losing? Any format or quality issues by going this route? This allows me to not necessarily need a 4k/120hz processor in my AVR but I don't know what the downsides are
  • one idea I have is to get another Bijou 600 and have them independently power each KEF .. this would be 400 watts. Is this overkill? (Fwiw I need to replace the remote which will be $100 CAD and can just get another used Bijou for $300-400 - I will then need a AVR with preouts for sure to handle both)

I appreciate any general thoughts on how you would best optimize this environment, how to spend my 'focused' funds as a dad of 3 kids etc.

Thanks everyone

Hey all, just beginning my home theater journey here and looking for advice on where to start. Hoping that if I can give you some of my wants/needs and some info about my space I can get some general advice on which brands to research.

My family/tv area is a 12x12 space where the tv is mounted on the wall opposite to my large couch. Currently just using a cheap klipsch soundbar/sub that I bought a few years ago, mostly due to financial constraints. I'd like to upgrade to a 3.1 or 5.1 system depending on what advice I receive here.

I have two young children and the TV room is in our basement. Sound carries fairly well throughout the house, so I'm not looking for any roided-up system that will blow the roof off. Mainly interested in clarity, balance, and features (especially those that will help manage dynamic range). I'm also looking for something with a relatively small footprint, such as bookshelf speakers that I can wall mount (for both the front and rear L R). The couch is backed up almost all the way to the wall opposite the TV, except for a little gap where I installed a wood bar so we'd have a place to put drinks and such. As a result if I mounted the two rear speakers back there they would be close-ish to where folks will be sitting. This is the TV we use:

Devices: I have a PS5, a steam deck dock, a Nintendo Switch, and a Roku for streaming TV, so I don't need a AVR with an excessive number of HDMI inputs, but would like at least 4.

Since I'm just starting my search, i'm not really ruling out any particular price ranges aside from the very high end. I don't mind spending a bit more as I tend to use tech like this for as long as I possibly can. Sincerely appreciate any comments and guidance that the community can provide. Thanks!

Hi, I recently purchased an spl meter from Amazon with good reviews but when I try measure my speakers following the guide that tells me to tune them at 75 decibels at my mlp the meter fluctuates quite a bit and makes it very hard to get an accurate reading. Is this normal or is the one I got from Amazon just not that good? I have it set at C waiting and slow yet it's still fluctuates between 73 and 75 and a half decibels sometimes. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance 😊

Before I dive into the AVS owner thread, I wanted to ask about my new receiver problems here. I have a newer SR 6015 (presumably without the HDMI 2.1) issues. I emailed Marantz with my serial number when I purchased it. I have an Apple TV, Sony 4k player hooked up all to a Sony X950h.

Everything worked flawlessly until a month or so ago. The eArc started to not be responsive. Then when I plugged in a XBOX X and things really went down hill. I don't know if it was the xbox or the received but I had two episodes where everything froze, loud static noise coming from the speakers. eArc is now almost useless. I switched inputs around. Now, I've noticed video is ahead of the audio sometimes, which has never been a problem.

Do I need to updated the receivers firmware? Are there other issues I'm not aware of?

Thanks for any help!

Hi, I recently got the Q Acoustics 3020i as rears and I understand if they're not very far from the wall that you're supposed to Bung them with the included foam bungs. My question is if only one of them needs a bung should I put the bung in the other speaker to keep the sound the same or does it matter. Cause if I don't need it in the other one I can use it in another speaker.

Thanks in advance 😊
