Hi everyone,

Looking for some opinions on what A/V setup for my new lounge/mancave area. Looking to be a mixed space for music, games, and movies.

I've attached a picture of what the space currently looks like for context.

I've also done a mockup of what I envision the space looking like.

What's important to me:

  1. Having an easy system to work with, I am not an audiophile and would like ease of access for CD/Spotify/turnable hookup, and switching to movies when I want to watch
  2. I care more about usability/connectivity than sound presets, I can't imagine needing anything different than watching a movie / having background music - I don't blast techno.
  3. Budget, would like to keep under $2k if possible, but open to contributing more in the future.

Questions:

  1. For speakers, bookshelf, tower, other type for the room? Recommendations for starter set considering the room size (sounds reasonable f or what I am looking to do)
  2. Denon X1700H sounds like a good AVR that will fit the needs, any other suggestions?
  3. Not going projector, might do an OLED - any TV considerations...or is that not really an issue?
  4. Maybe start with a good 3.1, upgrade to 5.1 with satellites?
  5. SONOS an option if I care about wireless connectivity with my phone? Is the 300 a consideration or any other options?

What's important to me is being able to have decent music for lounging/playing cards, as well as having a good movie watching experience (no Atmos or anything...yet).

Thank you in advance for helping me, community!

I just received from Klipsch R-50M book shelf speakers. I didn't realize they had cork on the bottoms, it wasn't on the listings, and I switched from RP-500MII to R-50M because I didn't think the cork was on the bottom. The cork is stuck on good, and I don't think I could ever get it off and still look good. Its too bad they didn't color the cork black because I probably would have lived with it.

I don't really have room beside the entertainment stand for speakers, because of other furniture that is there so I am going for book shelfs that can lay sideways on the entertainment stand. I know its not ideal.

I am not an audiophile, I just want to get good sound, and have them look nice. The reason why I went Klipsch is that it would match the R52C center channel I already have (previously gifted to me).

Budget wise, I am looking in the R-50M range to RP-500II range which is CAD$329 to CAD$598 for the pair. They would mostly be used for movies / TV, with the occasional music.

I was thinking about looking at Polk next, but I figured I would reach out to see if there was an obvious choice that I should be looking at.

Moving from SONY BDV-N9200W, which I cannot use in new apartment as the sofa is at the center of a room and there are no power outlets to power the speakers.

Or do I just power through and place ALL speakers in front like

2x Klipsch RP-6000F 5.1.2 + 2x RP-600C + 2 x RP-500M + 2x RP-500SA + 1x SPL-120

I recently acquired a Sony Projector ES5000 to go with my existing Sony ZA1100 ES receiver and Kef speakers. I have always loved the setup, but in the last few weeks noticed that the 4K Apple TV was randomly disconnecting, and the screen would go black when playing movies. The ATV was set to 4K SDR, 4:4:4 and had dynamic content matching turned on for HDR content. As I started to troubleshoot I was noticing that when I switched Chroma to 4:2:0 the picture was a bit more stable and the black screen disconnects were mostly gone. The project is connected to the receiver with an 48gbps fibre optic HDMi cable for future proofing as I had to run it through the ceiling and didn’t want to mess with it down the road. When I run tests now where Apple TV checks the HDR settings it is a hit and miss if it will complete the test. I then started to eliminate the receiver as a potential issue and connected the ATV directly to the Projector - and it now runs at full 4:4:4 and additionally I find HDR is a bit more pleasant and clearer. I have also replaced all other HDMi cables that connect directly to the receiver and ensured that all HDMI connections are set to enhance. I have the same issue with my 4K blue ray connected to the Receiver when enabling 4:4:4. I know I have read that you will not notice a difference in quality between 4:2:0 for movies, but I do find that the receiver seems to be downgrading the HDR experience. Has anyone else come across situations like this where their receiver was acting up like this. Sorry for the long winded message, just doing a sanity check before I engage Sony support - good news is the ES like comes with 5 year warranty.

For all the living room warriors out there, has anybody found an ergonomic sofa that doesn’t look like a bunch of hospital chairs pushed together or theater seats? I’ve been checking out Fjord and Stressless and their most attractive lines, the Monte Carlo and Emily, are some of their least comfortable options. They have lines that make me feel like every inch of my body is supported and I could watch a 10 hour movie with no discomfort. But they’re ugly as hell.

I’ve searched around other subs but it seems that other people don’t understand the need for comfortable seating for extended periods of time that isn’t in the laying position.

Just wondering if anybody has found that unicorn. Budget is around $9k

I just watched Ghostbusters Afterlife 4K and my subwoofer really seemed to struggle with it, it seemed like it pushed my sub to over excursion and didn't sound good at all. I have the Epik Empire (dual 15" subs) with an external 1000 watt amp (original amp died) and I don't know if I should be disappointed in the performance or need to look at fine tuning the sub. I do have a MiniDSP but it hasn't been installed yet. My room is big, 26x19' with 15' cathedral ceilings and opens to my kitchen so the sub does okay in general with some pressurization and chest thumping, but this movie definitely pushed it over what appears to be it's limits.

Has anyone else experienced that with this movie and if so, should i look at tweaking and fine tuning the sub, or do I start budgeting for a new sub?

Does anyone know if I can output a video signal from an LG TV to which I’m streaming content to via Airplay?

I cue up a movie on my phone, and use Airplay to watch it on a TV which is connected to a receiver via the TV’s HDMI 2 ARC port. So far so good. I get a great picture on the TV, and surround sound from the amp.

Now I want to send the picture to a Philips Hue sync box, but Airplay will only send video to one device. I’ve set the sync box to allow ARC and tried connecting it between the TV and the receiver. I still get sound, but the Hue sync box does not control the lights at all. I don’t think there’s any video going into it from the TV.

Is there a setting on the TV I should be changing? I can’t get the sync box to work when connected to the TV, but I’ve sent video into it from another device and it works as it should. So it looks like I can only get sound out of the TV’s HDMI port, even though the manual seems to imply that HDMI ARC is a 2-way street for both audio and video.

Any advice appreciated.

Hello, was wondering if I could get your help. I recently had a contractor install a new 70 V amplifier and six new rock speakers in my backyard, which are linked in series. The wire from the amplifier/receiver runs approximately 70 yards from my Home Theater to one of the speakers (which we will label as A). Speaker A is then Linked in series to speaker B, C, D, E, F. This system was just installed.

Prior to the installers leaving, I noticed that the volume level in speakers E and F, was significantly louder than the other four. In fact, A-D sound very muffled and nearly in audible.

From my minimal understanding, these speakers would all be on the same zone on the amplifier? And if that is the case, should they not all have the same power input and also output/volume?

The contractor possibly alluded to a wiring issue, coming from the house to outside. If that were the case, though, wouldn’t the last two speakers barely have any volume/output and the first 4 have all the juice?

Finally, I am trying to figure out why this is happening. Any possible thoughts/reasons? Maybe the way the new amp is set up/configured?

Thank you so much in advance.

What's your favorite AVR room calibration system? Or is there a definite best one.

These are just my personal opinions and I'm no audiophile or something. Also my speakers aren't anything special but good for me and anything more high end would be a waste.

Long ago I had a yamaha AVR and after running YPAO it sounded dull or flat in my opinion. It corrected the distance and the volume of every speaker

Denons Audysey sounded great at the beginning. Really spectacular but after a while it was tiring. It was just overly extreme.

My actual AVR is a pioneer and MCACC is my favourite at the moment. It isn't as spectacular like denon and not as flat as Yamaha. It just sounds right.

I'm asking because I plan to upgrade to a newer AVR because of 120 Hz and haven't really decided what I want.

I'm looking for an all in one amp/ streamer that I can also use with my avr. I currently have my kef r3 s as my fronts. Kef center and old Bowers and Wilkins bookselves as rears with a svs micro3000. I was looking and the Arcam or Cambridge but open to suggestions to take my system to the next level. I do about 50/50 music and movies. Thanks!

I'm getting electric zaps when i touch a plugged in HDMI cable from my system. I think it comes from my Zidoo NEO X. I'm scared that it'll fry something some day when i plug it in and out.

My system is grounded via the 220V plugs.

Do you know of any solutions to correct this?

My Onkyo tx-sr508 seems to lower the volume of the center channel every once in a while, to the point where I can't really hear it. I have tried reconnecting the speaker wire, but the same problem still persists. Restarting the receiver, however, does seem to fix the issue most of the time. The volume of the center channel stays at 0db when output seems lower. Does anyone recognize this issue, or know a possible solution?

Monitor system on TV

Hey guys! I have an old pair of studio monitors and a subwoofer laying around for a long time. We recently moved and the new living room is way larger than before, now the inbuilt TV speakers don't cut it anymore. I don't want to get a speaker bar or something like that, I want to use the old system I have at hand. The stupid TV only has an optical out, so I got an spdif to rca adapter, wich works. It's unusable as it is tho. The sound is way to loud, despite having the monitors and the woofer dialed down to min. Additionally, I can't control the volume output of the TV with the remote as it seems. This works with every other audio connection tho, inbuilt and bluetooth. Only optical doesn't work. That's probably because of the converter. So I figured, I might need a dac or something to put in between the TV and the woofer. That's where I'm at now, are there any known dacs or some other hardware I can use, to connect optical to my audio source, has a dial for volume and has an xlr L and xlr R out. If this even had a remote control, holy cow. Any recommendations? I appreciate your help!

I am sorry if this is the wrong sub, please point me in the right direction if you know!

Hi there,

first of all all the different possibilities (dacs, preamps, preouts ...) in the music world confuse me so I really need help to get a system I like ... :)

Right now I am trying to update my system, mainly to listen to music, currently streamed through some cheap HAMA streamer, mostly Spotify connect. In addition my system is hooked to a TV (which is connected to PS5). I am planning a 2.1, mabe 2.2 system, currently no need for more speakers, but you never know. Music sound is more important to me than movie sound. I dont need to be shaken during movies but love to have good sound, especially in music.

I replaced my old speakers with a pair of "used" (like new) Wharfdale Lintons, which are really awesome and I am buying a sub right now (will be SVS SB 2000 or KEF Kube 12b due to a really good price).

Everything is hooked up to an old Yamaha v563 AVR which I would like to upgrade sometime as it will be used in another room to power my old speakers. As the streamer is not the best this might be replaced also.

All will be set up in a quite large L-shaped living/dining room combination so quite difficult.

Now I would like to keep things as cost effective and as simple as possible (well below 1000 € in Europe if possible) and it would be great to update step by step if that would be an option so cost will be spread. I'd like to have room correction due to my difficult room and as I have read great things about Dirac or XT32.

If I got it right I could do this:

Option 1: Simple all in one solution like Onkyo 7100, Pioneer 305, Denon X3800h (with XT32, Dirac upgrade maybe later if not satisfied)

Option 2: Something like Wiim streamer, MiniDSP DDRC24 and adding a used stereo amp like Yamaha 701 (or buy this for my other room and still usw my old AVR?) Plus side: I could upgrade step by step. But I would have to use several remote controls? I am quite confused if all of this could be wired correctly.

Is there a good option 3 i do not see?

You see I do not have a clue what I should do and the more I read the more confused I get. Any advice is much appreciated! What would you do? Please help an audio noob! Many thanks!

The hdmi cable says it's a high speed hdmi with ethernet. I am currently using it by connecting my Panasonic ub820 4k blu-ray player to my LG C1 OLED. I am getting dolby vision HDR and Atmos from my House of the Dragon 4k Blu-ray. I've had this hdmi cable for about a decade. My Panasonic ub820 shows up as Panasonic DVD player on HDMI 1 of my LG C1. I have been using this hdmi cable for connecting my old Sony 1080p blu-ray to my old 1080p Samsung TV.

Hi, i have a xgimi mogo pro projector and recently bought a samsung q910c sound system. The projector runs on android tv and it has hdmi arc. Is that enough for atmos content or do i need a blueray player or a receiver to enable the atmos content with this setup?

I currently have 5.1 setup (Klipsch RP280F, RP440C, RP160M and SVS PB1KPro) on an entry level Onkyo TX393. I recently upgraded to a 75” Sony X90L and purchased a Panasonic UB820 (coming soon).

I’m looking to upgrade so that I can enjoy a more full sound stage and take advantage of my new TV/4K player. I would also like to expand to 5.1.4 down the road.

I don’t game on the TV beyond Nintendo switch, so the single 2.1 HDMI port is a non-issue. I don’t think anything I have/plan to have would use it.

Would the 4K Blu-ray player gain anything from 2.1 HDMI?

Thanks for any advice.

Basically the only real difference between the two that is relevant for me is the fact that the 820 has DV. Now my QLED 4k TV supports DV and HDR10+, but I really don't know if DV is worth the $200+ price difference, especially considering I don't have an audio setup that would take advantage of the 820's capabilities. The 420 doesn't have DV but does support HDR10+ (which I understand is kind of forgotten nowadays).

So I guess my question is, does DV have a marked difference from HDR10 and HDR10+ that it justifies another $200 dollars?

We are moving soon and the new home has a two story great room. Tons of windows. A wall that has the size to do whatever we need. I also have auto blinds going in with will help with light but obviously it’s not going to stop it.

I was originally bought into a UST due to wall size and room size. Due to light was looking at the Epson LS800 which paired with an ALR would do the job at 120”.

Then starting chatting with folks and someone brought up these harder tvs 98” TCL, 100” Hisense, etc.

Overall we watch TV during daylight maybe 20% of the time and the other 80 at night.

What does everyone think is best. Overall pricing today between the 98” tvs and the UST/ALR seem about equivalent. One of my fears was ease of use for kids to turn on projector / screen and operate.

If you went with TV which model would you go for?

If projector is solution in your mind, which?

Thanks!!
