We just bought a new house that has multiple speakers installed in the ceiling. I asked the previous homeowner where the speakers are wired to, and she said that they never used them, but when they bought the house, the previous owner had left behind an old amp/receiver in a certain closet. I have looked at that closet (and the other closets and cabinets throughout the house) and cannot find any trace of speaker wire coming out of the wall. I tried looking in the attic, but the area with the speakers is not easily accessible and covered with insulation.

Any tips on how I can find where these speakers connect to?

Sony A95L + Marantz Cinema 50

Apple TV 3rd Gen 128GB (with Ethernet)

No issues with Xbox Series X, Ps5, or UBP9000

White line appears on any content from the Apple TV on the top left corner, including the home screen for the Apple TV. I have already replaced the Apple TV under warranty (seperate issue) and tested 2 different brands of HDMI 2.1 6ft cables (which work on other sources, such as the consoles which run fine in ALLM+VRR). Any ideas as to the culprit here? Im going to be testing to see if I can isolate it to a particular Video Mode on the Apple TV. Its currently set up as 4k 60hz HDR 4:2:2.

I have always dreamed of having my own home theater setup. Over the last five years I've been slowly adding new equipment and I think I'm at a point where I can say it's starting to be a lot of fun. Especially with the subs. :D

But you know how it is - a home theatre is never really finished, there is always room for improvement. I'm really enjoying putting all these pieces together and watching my cave slowly come to life.

Excited to see where it goes.

my current gear:

  • Projector: JVC NP5
  • Receiver: AVR-X4400H
  • Amp: Emotiva BASX A4 Four-channel (for Surround and Buttkicker)
  • Amp: Emotiva XPA-3 Gen3 (Front channels LCR)
  • Speakers: Arendal 1723 Tower, 1723 Center, Back Surround 1961 Monitor (will be swapped with 1723 Bookshelf S)
  • Atmos Speakers: Leftovers from my old Logitech 906 system. Will upgrade them when I find another pair of 1961 Monitors.
  • Subwoofers: 4x Arendal 2S
  • Studio Monitors: Nubert X-4000 RC
  • TV: LG C2 / 2x Acer KG271U
  • Casio Piano CDP-360BK

I'd love to buy a 2K-4K TV, ideally with HDR, but I absolutely do not want a smart TV. I know that rules out many options, but I don't need the best of the best, just something decent that fits the minimum criteria I'm looking for. I'm sure there are plenty of other folks here who would love to find something like this as well.

Just to address a few common points since I know folks have asked in this sub about dumb TVs before:

Just buy a smart TV and don't connect it to the internet.

I do not want to do this. More and more smart TVs are requiring some amount of internet usage to function, automatically try to connect to open networks when internet is disabled, or risk adding these features through firmware updates. I don't want anything that has internet capabilities.

Dumb TVs would actually be much more expensive than smart TVs, since selling your data subsidizes the cost.

That's fine. I am willing to pay more for a dumb TV, maybe up to $2,000. I'd even like to learn about more expensive models if that's all there is.

Look into digital signage/hospitality tvs/commercial displays

This does seem like a promising option, but from my research, these days even all of the digital signage I can find run on Android OS. If anyone knows of a model that doesn't, I'm all ears.

Must haves:

  • Must NOT be a smart TV. This means not running on Android OS, WebOS, Tizen, Apple TV, Roku, or any other "smart" OS capable of connecting to the internet.
  • Must support at least 2K resolution, ideally 4K
  • Must support HDR, with at least 400 nits brightness. This unfortunately seems to rule out most Spectre TVs, unless I'm missing any that go higher in brightness

So that's where I'm stuck. I know it's rare, but there's gotta be something out there. Has anyone here had any luck with this?

Looking for recommendations on a budget speaker system. Im new to this, so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. 50% music. 50% movies. So far i only have the receiver: Denon AVR S570BT

I have $1000 budget for a 5.1 system excluding receiver. Could stretch budget a little if needed. Im thinking Rsl speedwoofer Mk2 10" Center: Kef Q150 or Polk xt35 or s35 Left and Right: Kef Q150

I'm looking to finally upgrade my old HK AVR-325 that I bought non-current in 2004, and have settled on an AVR-X3x00H.

I can get a refurbed 3600H for $849.99 or refurbed 3800H for $1299. With tax here in Ontario, that's a $507 difference (~$380 USD).

It's in our main/great room of the house that's open to above, will never have 4 subs, will never need pre-amp mode, don't foresee needing HDMI 2.1 any time. I can afford both, but is the 3800 worth the extra $507?

i have had this denon receiver in my home theater for ages now, like 5+ years, i didnt set it up myself and i don't even know the model name. for whatever reason, it randomly stopped working recently. i checked my breakers and whatnot and i know power is flowing in the home theater. but the receiver just doesn't turn on. to be clear - it's not that it's stuck on power off (the ring around the power button would be red then), it's that there's no power in the receiver whatsoever, the ring is blank. the lights, projector, and everything else in that room which isn't connected to the receiver work. When working, the receiver is set up for inputs that consist of two consoles, a Roku, and a Blu Ray player. I don't know what's wrong with the receiver or how to fix it.

Hi guys, new to the audio side of this stuff and can't figure out why this isn't working.

I'm setting up my partner's system - not anywhere close to a full home theatre, but as close as her tiny flat will allow. She has a small TV and a cheapish but half decent projector. She has a Sony HT-SF150 soundbar that we got her because Plex is terrible at downmixing surround sound and the TV just didn't have enough volume at times. Everything was fine until we added the projector into the mix and tried to get the sound running through the soundbar.

The soundbar doesn't have HDMI passthrough and relies on ARC (which the TV handles just fine) or optical audio. After an abortive attempt with long cables and a 3.5mm to optical converter (the projector has a 3.5mm headphone output, which I've tested is working), I picked up this box, both to make multiple inputs easier and to extract the audio from the HDMI signal before it goes to the output device. The optical output on it is definitely working - I can see the light coming out of the soundbar end - but the soundbar just isn't acknowledging it as an input.

I've never really worked with optical audio before - any idea what I'm missing? As far as I can tell it should be working, and I'm leaning towards something being wrong with the soundbar as every tutorial online for connecting this thing optically just has you plug it in and it works.

Sorry, probably a noob question, but I'm new to this.

So my canton vento 820.2 bookshelf speakers has a 4–8 ohm impedance. My Denon AVR-S660H says 4–16 ohm on the back. I'm not using any other speakers. What ohm do I set the Denon to 4, 6 or 8?

Does it matter? Will there be a difference in sound?

Distance from TV: 11.5FT

Room size: 15FT X 20FT

Often times I’m trying to watch a movie and between the AC/Heat running and Washer/Dryer going I can’t hear shit.

My TV speakers aren’t cutting it unless I blast the volume and at that point it’s really just adding to the noise and losing audio quality.

First and foremost I’m looking to start a “home theater” in terms of L + R and then growing from there. I just figured if there were home theater speakers that also played clearly through ambient noise, I’d take a look at them.

As of now, I’m looking at SVS Ultra Bookshelves or Prime Towers. I guess that puts my budget around $1000, though I’d be willing to spend a little extra.

Am I on the right path? Any suggestions?

Thanks

which one would you buy for movie watching in a 17 x 18.5 x 9 living room? I’m not looking for IMAX quality sound levels nor am I an audiophile.

I acquired an NEC PA521U. Company was doing an upgrade and had no interest in keeping the old model. I can tell it will need a lamp soon, but everything else seems to be functional.

I know virtually nothing about projectors. Other than light go on wall/screen make picture. Would this model be worth investing a little time effort into using? Like ceiling mounting it for a home theater?
