I've been playing around with my new Sony XW5000ES along with Denon AVR-X2700H and Roku Ultra. I'm loving it overall.
I wanted to run by some observations with the community.
MotionFlow: When watching movies, all the motion flow options seemed to suck. Even with "True Cinema", it seemed to be introducing a slight jitter. I turned the feature off entirely and haven't noticed any problems.
Reality Creation: What exactly is the purpose of this feature? Something to do with enhancing clarity/sharpness? I tend to look at the eyes of the characters to see if it looks sharper and I can't say I noticed this improving anything. However, I did notice that in some scenarios, Reality Creation was actually adding a ton of noise. Check out this scene from "Maestro" as I toggle it on/off. Notice the noise it adds to her skin. When diving deeper into the settings, I noticed that it was "D.Range Optimizer" that was the cause here. With that off, it seemed to eliminate the noise, but I genuinely can't see a difference with reality creation off/on otherwise so I'm not sure the point.
Overly dark HDR Content: This is a big one and I don't know if it's actually the projector that is the problem.
When the Roku Ultra is set to Automatic (4K HDR10) it seems to make all video overly dark and lacking in contrast/saturation whether it's HDR content or not. I've tried playing with various settings and no matter what I do, it always ends up looking like trash. However, if I force the Roku Ultra to ignore HDR content by changing the setting to 4K TV suddenly everything looks wonderful. Some examples:
Notice how much darker and less saturated the first clip is. I played around with other options like Bright Cinema, increasing brightness, increasing contrast, etc and no matter what I did, I just couldn't replicate how it looked with the Roku ignoring HDR.
Taking photos with my phone is a little tricky, because the phone is trying to brighten the image to compensate for how incredibly dark and lacking in contrast the HDR version is, but here's some side by side shots from Maestro and an episode of Doctor Who.
Big Note: I suspect this might not be exclusive to the Sony projector, because I've experienced the same issues trying to watch HDR content with a different Roku Ultra on my Samsung QLED. No matter what I did, HDR content just looked too dark. I had to force off HDR there too.
There's one weird drawback of abandoning HDR which is that when I'm in Disney Plus browsing through content, it seems to only show content available in "HD" even if I know 4k Ultra HD is actually available. I read in a thread elsewhere that it still might actually stream in 4k, it's just a quirk of the DisneyPlus app that the preview page says only HD.
