Recommendations always welcome. I don't have a very high end projector and I'm not looking for perfect visuals. I'd just like to set something up for my mother so she can enjoy a theater like experience that won't break the bank for us.

I've been toying with the idea of just getting a relatively cheep 120 inch screen and making my own motorized or manual raise and lower mechanism. Just wondering if anyone has already done something like that or if it's simply worth the cost to buy a pre-made one.

Many thanks for your time in reading. I honestly and greatly appreciate it.

Yes before anyone says "I told you so", I was being an idiot while mounting my Epson 5050ub to the mount in the ceiling and didn't ask for help and thought I could do it alone while on a ladder.

Needless to say, it dropped and did about 5 summersaults down the carpet.

I mounted it and hooked it up and it appears to still work fine, but this is also my first projector so I don't know what I don't know.

Is there any type of test or anything I can do to make sure I really got this lucky? It is brand new and still under warranty.

I'm looking for tips on a reasonable speaker setup for a clean family room look. It doesn't need to be the perfect home theater setup. The house isn't built yet so I can run wires wherever easily.

I'll be using a Samsung Frame TV, so I don't want to use a soundbar below the TV because that ruins the look. I was considering all in-ceiling speakers, but it seems like that may not be the best option? Would just two wall speakers on the left and right of the TV work?

The room is about 20feet long and 19 feet wide with 12 foot ceilings. The photo is representative of what the room would look like, but I would be using a 3 piece sectional, so the main viewing area is in front of the TV.

Hi everyone,

I currently have a Bose Acoustimass 10 series II system (5.1) installed, which is hooked up to a Pioneer VSX-932. Due to the very poor performance of the center channel, I have already replaced this with the Dali Spektor Vokal, as I scored a very good deal on it.

I'd like to upgrade/ replace this system in the future, keeping the Pioneer receiver and the Dali center channel, but changing out the other speakers/ 'subwoofer' with something better.

I currently do not have a budget in mind, but I am mainly considering the formfactor and the looks, as the Bose system is wall-mounted (except for the center channel) and I would like to keep the overal esthetic pretty similar. The sound quality is of course important, but I'm assuming basically everything is an upgrade over the current Bose system that is installed.

The system belongs to my dad/ parents, he does notice that the current system is not optimal, but he is not an audiophile; he just likes to watch movies with surround sound (not focused on music), hence the sound quality is not the biggest concern, as long as the price/ performance is good. The WAF is important of course.

I would like to give him the upgrade, or at least the proper advice for the upgrade in the future (maybe on his birthday in April).

Much thanks in advance and enjoy the New Year!

Hi,

I have the Benq W2700. Do you think it's worth upgrading to an avcx3800h for example or something else? The Denon has good power but it's a little old. Is it worth upgrading for the features considering my benq w2700 doesn't support much visual wise. HDR10+ or dolby Vision for example

I just bought a Denon X3800H, and am waiting for my Dirac-compatible microphone to get here before I use the algorithm.

But wanted to ask if it will take into account the measurements I took for my speaker distances when I use the software. Seeing how it’s used via Mac or PC, I doubt it, but wanted to ask.

Hello,

I'm thinking of buying the tv in the title for 450 euro in one of my local shops.

it has HDMI 2.1 and some gaming features that make it stand out.

does anyone have this TV and can advise me if it's a good fit for the series s and if every game feature works as intended?

thanks!

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to replace my dad's old and broken home cinema amp, the Yamaha DSP A2070. I'm thinking about getting the Yamaha RX V6A, but I'm not sure if it's a good fit, especially since his speakers are the Celestion Ditton 66 Studio Monitors.

Any advice on this upgrade would be super helpful!

Thanks a bunch!

I've been playing around with my new Sony XW5000ES along with Denon AVR-X2700H and Roku Ultra. I'm loving it overall.

I wanted to run by some observations with the community.

MotionFlow: When watching movies, all the motion flow options seemed to suck. Even with "True Cinema", it seemed to be introducing a slight jitter. I turned the feature off entirely and haven't noticed any problems.

Reality Creation: What exactly is the purpose of this feature? Something to do with enhancing clarity/sharpness? I tend to look at the eyes of the characters to see if it looks sharper and I can't say I noticed this improving anything. However, I did notice that in some scenarios, Reality Creation was actually adding a ton of noise. Check out this scene from "Maestro" as I toggle it on/off. Notice the noise it adds to her skin. When diving deeper into the settings, I noticed that it was "D.Range Optimizer" that was the cause here. With that off, it seemed to eliminate the noise, but I genuinely can't see a difference with reality creation off/on otherwise so I'm not sure the point.

Overly dark HDR Content: This is a big one and I don't know if it's actually the projector that is the problem.

When the Roku Ultra is set to Automatic (4K HDR10) it seems to make all video overly dark and lacking in contrast/saturation whether it's HDR content or not. I've tried playing with various settings and no matter what I do, it always ends up looking like trash. However, if I force the Roku Ultra to ignore HDR content by changing the setting to 4K TV suddenly everything looks wonderful. Some examples:

Notice how much darker and less saturated the first clip is. I played around with other options like Bright Cinema, increasing brightness, increasing contrast, etc and no matter what I did, I just couldn't replicate how it looked with the Roku ignoring HDR.

Taking photos with my phone is a little tricky, because the phone is trying to brighten the image to compensate for how incredibly dark and lacking in contrast the HDR version is, but here's some side by side shots from Maestro and an episode of Doctor Who.

Big Note: I suspect this might not be exclusive to the Sony projector, because I've experienced the same issues trying to watch HDR content with a different Roku Ultra on my Samsung QLED. No matter what I did, HDR content just looked too dark. I had to force off HDR there too.

There's one weird drawback of abandoning HDR which is that when I'm in Disney Plus browsing through content, it seems to only show content available in "HD" even if I know 4k Ultra HD is actually available. I read in a thread elsewhere that it still might actually stream in 4k, it's just a quirk of the DisneyPlus app that the preview page says only HD.

Interested to hear thoughts/suggestions.

(Posted over in r/Heos too)

Just got an open-box deal on a Cinema 40 that was a customer return. It had then been sent away to the UK agent who returned it to the store as 'no fault found'.

It took less than a minute to observe the fault after powering on.

When the setup process gets to the part about connecting the network and it tries to play music from the internet - nothing...

Completed the setup anyway and the network diagnostics show - 'Internet Access - Error'

Ok - try using Heos - local DLNA servers work fine. All internet services fail (e.g. Amazon Music, Tune-In).

Spotify however, works just fine! Of course Spotify runs outside of Heos - which is probably important.

I then did the full factory firmware restore - because if I'm to keep it I needed to know if it can successfully pull firmware from the allegedly inaccessible internet. And it can...

My assumption is that the Heos board has an issue (it presents as if it cannot see the default gateway on the LAN) - has anybody seen similar and been able to rectify it themselves?

Thanks.

Hi,

I am moving to a new apartment soon and I have never had any smart home devices. I am trying to make a home cinema setup with voice controls and I am not sure how best to acomplish that. What I want is to be able to turn on and switch the audio and visual output from my PC+PC speaker to my TV+sound system. This should be done with a simple voice command like "switch to TV mode" or whatever. Also stuff like turning on the TV etc should be done with voice commands but once I have some kind of connection from voice control hub to TV that should be easy.

I obviously need something like Alexa, some home hub, a smart TV and somehow I need to dynamically change the output of my PC. (and also connect the pc wirelessly)

I also wanna control the lights and start spotify with voice commands but thats easy anyway I think.

Any good resources for me to read? Is there anything I need to be aware of before buying a TV or sound system?

Hi All,

I just picked up a used Pioneer VSX-1121. Its looks new and is perfectly clean and was well taken care of. It’s an awesome received but …

It makes a humm sound when on. The humm is coming from the receiver. Nothing coming from the speakers.

I had an Onkyo before with same speakers, sources, etc and it was perfectly silent.

Would love to know if anyone else who has a VSX-1121 has a humm sound with their unit!

Im basically done with my first real home theater build, only my surrounds are missing at this point. My setup, thats relevant to my questions, consists of:

  • Epson eh-tw9300
  • Apple tv 4k
  • Yamaha Receiver RX-V4A
  • 2 x 8K HDMI 2.1 48gbps

This may get a bit longer, i try to keep it as short as possible while giving every piece of information that may be needed.First of all, everything that is installed at this point, basically everything except the surrounds, is working!

The first problem i encountered is that i cant seem to fill out the whole projection area of my screen (100 inch). My projector can throw an image large enough, but when i fill out the wide part of my screen, i still have a few centimeteres at the top and bottom that are not filled out. This would suggest that my screen is not in a 16:9 aspect ratio, but i checked it and it is. I could not find any way to change the aspect ration within the menu of my projector and neither in the apple tv 4k (atleast not that it ISNT giving out an 16:9 image). How would i even begin fixing this? Did i overlook something in either of the menus? (its a minor problem in my eyes, because many movies are in 21:9 either way, so that isnt a huge problem for me)

The second problem is HDR (or maybe not?). I cant seem to turn HDR on in the apple tv, but i was able to activate a HDR profile in my projectors settings while watching a show with it, i have no idea if its "real" HDR or just an HDR upsacle or however you would call that? Why is th apple tv giving me no image when i turn HDR on?

That are the problems that i discovered so far.

With that out of the way, how do i properly set my projector up and adjust the picture? Is there any order in which you should take each step and what steps are there to get the best performance out of my gear?Help is very much appreciated and i wish all of you a happy new year!
