Crocodile Dundee | New 'Encore Cut' removes footage from original film

A 4K remastered 'Encore Cut' of Crocodile Dundee is being released this year -- but one or two moments have been edited out. More here.

In 2020, the most complained about movie to the British Board of Film Classification here in the UK was the re-issue of 1980's Flash Gordon. 91 people wrote to the board, protesting a simple note that was added to the start of the picture, letting people know the film contained "discriminatory stereotypes". Not a frame of footage of the film was touched, it's just 91 people felt advising people of something in the film was worthy of complaint.

I always thought the re-release of Flash Gordon was handled well. I'm not quite sure a planned re-release of Crocodile Dundee is going to go quite the same way.

The original movie was release in America in 1986, where it became a genuine sleeper hit, and the biggest film of the year. It made an international star of Paul Hogan, and spawned a couple of sequels too.

What's often overlooked though is that the cut of the film released outside of Australia was different to the one that originally debuted. Australian moviegoers got a slightly different, longer Crocodile Dundee. And now, they're getting a 4K remaster of the film in cinemas in 2025.

It's also a recut version of the movie, now known as the 'Encore Cut' of the film. However, rather than just opening up the movie with a warning about material that doesn't look too good through a modern lens, it's being reported that two and a half minutes has been snipped out of the film.

As per QNews, there is opening text, but also, material where Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee and meets a crossdresser has been edited out. It was never the best of jokes, and always a bit jarring, but I do wonder where it leads to start retroactively editing films to fit a modern lens. I'm not in the slightest defending the joke, and never liked it. But this is a very difficult road.

Production company Rimfire Films issued a statement ahead of the Encore Cut's debut noting that "some years ago, Paramount Pictures and other distributors requested the reference to the crossdresser be edited from the original film, as they found it offensive. We agreed to that request".

There's another joke on a similar theme later on in the movie that's said to have been excised, that's basically Mick Dundee groping someone.

Hogan has signed off on the changes to the film. Inevitably, someone has wheeled out the -- sigh -- word 'woke' and asked him about it (just wait until the Mail and Telegraph get hold of this story. I shudder).

Hogan's response is that people pointed out to him that "this guy is a folk hero around the world. He shouldn't be groping people. And I thought yeah that's right, he shouldn't be, so take it out. I mean, he did it in all innocence, in naivety, but it's better without it".

The plan is for Crocodile Dundee: The Encore Cut to debut in Australian cinemas on 8th May, complete with 4K remaster. There's also a documentary about the making of the film, with newly rediscovered materials telling the behind the scenes story of the movie. You can read a little bit more about that here.

No word yet on a British release for the Crocodile Dundee. Also, it should be noted that the original cut is still out there too, and isn't being deleted. It'd be interesting if we could see the actual original Australian cut too, before it was chopped for a US audience.

When Criterion announced that it would celebrate its 40th anniversary by replicating the Closet with a portable Closet van, cinephiles across the country started planning their visits when the tour reached their home cities. To have a movie in the Criterion Collection is a great honor. Still, there are a few misconceptions regarding what the Criterion Collection actually is, what purpose it serves in our culture, and how decisions are made regarding the films that "get in." Coming from a physical media obsessive, consider this your crash-course history lesson and guide to all things Criterion.

Founded by Robert Stein, Aleen Stein, and Joe Medjuck in 1984, Criterion is a pioneering home media distribution company that focuses on restoring, preserving, and publishing important cinematic works — classic and contemporary — across all genres and from around the world. The films that Criterion distributes on physical media are considered part of the Criterion Collection, including its early days of LaserDisc and out-of-print DVDs. Criterion was truly the first of its kind to include restorations and supplemental special features to encourage repeat viewings with its releases, essentially providing buyers the ultimate viewing experience that included film enjoyment and film education. For over 40 years, Criterion has worked in tandem with filmmakers and film scholars to put out the best release possible of any given title.

As far as the films that are selected to be a part of the collection, despite the "arthouse" or "snobby" accusations often lobbied at Criterion, the collection has a little bit of everything. An intimate, black and white micro-budget queer film like "Go Fish" exists alongside an exercise in depravity like "Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom," Chantal Akerman's French masterpiece "Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles," and an explosive blockbuster like Michael Bay's "Armageddon." But Criterion doesn't have carte blanche to obtain any title it wants, including films it's previously released. Criterion is also at the mercy of the movie's rightsholders. For example, Criterion released John Woo's action classic "Hard Boiled" on DVD and it has been out of print for many years, but we likely won't see a re-release anytime soon as Shout! Factory recently obtained the rights to 156 films in the Golden Princess Library of Hong Kong cinema, including "Hard Boiled."

Following the worldwide hit "Paddington," one of the most successful family films of all time, this much-anticipated sequel finds Paddington (Ben Whishaw) happily settled with the Brown family in London, where he has become a popular member of the local community, spreading joy and marmalade wherever he goes.

Reuniting many of the original film's cast while welcoming those in new roles, "Paddington 2" stars Golden Globe nominee Hugh Bonneville ("Downton Abbey"), Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins ("Blue Jasmine"), three-time Golden Globe nominee Brendan Gleeson ("The Guard," "Into the Storm," "In Bruges"), Oscar nominee Julie Walters ("Billy Elliot," "Educating Rita"), Oscar winner Jim Broadbent ("Iris"), and Oscar winner Peter Capaldi (short, "Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life"), with Golden Globe and BAFTA Award winner Hugh Grant ("Four Weddings and a Funeral"), and BAFTA winner Ben Whishaw ("The Hollow Crown") as the voice of Paddington. The starring ensemble also includes Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, and Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton ("Vera Drake") as the voice of Aunt Lucy.

The film was produced by multiple award-winning producer David Heyman (the "Harry Potter" films, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," Oscar nominee for "Gravity"). Serving as executive producers were Rosie Alison, Jeffrey Clifford, Alexandra Ferguson Derbyshire, Ron Halpern, and Didier Lupiter.

Paddington's return to the big screen was again helmed by BAFTA-nominated director Paul King ("Paddington," "Come Fly with Me," "The Mighty Boosh") from a script written by King and Simon Farnaby (Sky TV's "Yonderland," "Mindhorn"), based on the best-selling and internationally adored books by Michael Bond, creator of Paddington Bear.

I've been watching the Rockford Files on Samsung TV and the commercials and syndication cuts have been getting on my nerves. I decided to get the series on Blu ray and ordered a set on eBay that I didn't realize was from Mill Creek.

I figure I'll just rant and post my warning here.

The Packaging-Not as bad as I have seen in the past from Mill Creek, but there are 4 discs per season and only 2 disc spindles per case. This is annoying and may or may not scratch the top discs over time. There are also 2 of the Blu Ray cases that have slightly different cases than the rest. Not the biggest deal in the world but still just a lack of attention to any kind of detail. The cardboard case that holds all the Blu-ray cases is incredibly flimsy and not glued or printed with any gloss. The slipcovers are kind of shoddy too.

The Content-No special features, no commentary tracks, NOT EVEN SUBTITLES! Half the reason I like physical media is stuff like that. At least the scans are nice. Clean and pretty with DTS-HD audio that sounds as good as its going to at this point. It's just what I assume is the original stereo track and doesn't have a 5.1 or 7.1 remaster. Its a good thing the picture is clear because our deaf friends are going to have to read lips and thankfully it is at least in the original aspect ratio.

Other Annoying Stuff-The DVD release of Season 1 contained the original TV movie pilot in its original release format. This Blu-release only has the chopped up "Season 0" 2 part episode with cuts and alterations. Again, not the end of the world, just highly annoying to have the Blu-ray release not be the superior version.

The printing on all the Blu-rays has a huge section of the artwork covered up with an ad for Mill Creek's website.

The Menus are lame too but what can I expect when there are no features to select from They don't have to be amazing but they just suck.

This is the only HD release of the Rockford Files. I understand that I am probably one of the few people who gives a crap about the Rockford Files but it's a shame that such a good show that was shot on film on location in LA is treated in such a slipshod manner by a fourth rate company like Mill Creek.

--WARNING FOR POSTERITY-- Mill Creek sucks. This is far from their worst release but frankly, all of their stuff is just crap. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here but seriously? NO SUBTITLES? That sucks.

I was gifted a 4K bluray player for Christmas. Whopper!

I immediately bought my favourite movie of all time - Aliens. I only got around to watching it recently and HOLY COW the detail. I grew up watching it on a VHS that I recorded off the TV.

I'm looking for some recommendations for things to visually blow me away. I was thinking of Interstellar, but I did watch that recently enough.

All suggestions welcome and thank you!

edit: Some absolute bangers of recommendations here, many of which I wouldn't have considered. Thanks folks!

Widely regarded as the greatest British film of all time, and making its 4K debut, director Carol Reed’s noir The Third Man, brilliantly scripted by Graham Greene – and set to Anton Karas’s evocative zither score – is a justly celebrated classic further enhanced by Orson Welles in one of his most iconic roles. After writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) arrives in post-WWII Vienna to meet his old friend Harry Lime (the incomparable Welles), he discovers Lime has been killed in a suspicious accident. As the accident’s witnesses disappear, the sardonic Major Calloway (Trevor Howard) and Lime’s mistress, Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli), complicate Martins’s search for answers regarding his friend’s death. But will his relentless curiosity lead him to discoveries about Lime he’d rather not know?

With over 18 years of history, Blu-ray technology was designed to take CDs and DVDs to the next level. Not only can they hold significantly more data than their predecessors, but Blu-ray discs even let you view high-quality (and 3D content) that often are closer to the experience of watching in theaters than the compressed versions you'll find elsewhere. Not to be confused with DVDs, Blu-ray discs use a different kind of laser technology, which eventually became the industry standard for film and movies by 2008. In part, this is due to the fact that its players could be backwards-compatible with DVDs, but not the other way around.

...

Although some things can (and have) lasted the test of time, the natural progression of most technology is that something becomes obsolete when a newer, better, or more efficient model comes along. In terms of the Blu-ray discs, there are several things that have pushed them to obsoletion.

If you have a physical media collection for movies, TV shows, games, music, or something else, you’ve probably wondered “do I already have this?” while shopping. There’s an easy way to solve this problem: make a simple list.

There are many apps and services intended for tracking your collection of movies, games, music, and other media across digital and physical formats. Those are useful tools, especially the ones with the ability to add extra metadata, but they aren’t strictly necessary. If you just want to know what you already own, so you can quickly check you aren’t about to buy the same movie or game again, you can go for a more basic solution.

Perched on the end of a row of terraces in a small town is one of the last DVD rental shops in the UK.

In 2022, there were thought to be as few as 10 remaining.

For 43 years Steve Webber has been behind the desk of Northgate Video, but how has he kept going amid the demise of chain retailers like Blockbuster and the rise of streaming services?

Sitting on the corner of Northgate Street in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, it is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it shop.

But for those who head inside, it is like stepping back in time as customers are greeted by walls of shelves packed with thousands of DVDs for sale and rent. And a movie is always playing on a TV by the window.

Mr Webber, 72, says while he has some regulars, he gets passing trade from people intrigued by the idea a video or DVD rental shop still exists.

"It's just nice to see people come in and say, 'Oh wow, I didn't realise places like this existed'," he said.

"I had a lad come in months ago, a real film buff, and he was gobsmacked by it."

...

"Back in the early days it was just VHS tapes, which cost me £50 or £60."

He would then rent them out for £2 a night, rising to about £2.50 in the early 2000s.

One thing never changed though, the most popular rentals were always new releases or horror films - "anything not available on TV".

The most popular items over the years have included the lesser-known Zombie Flesh Eaters alongside hits like Apocalypse Now, Mad Max, Life of Brian and Star Trek.

...

He still offers DVD rentals but said the market was "pretty much non-existent" with the focus now on sales.

"I've got a few regulars come in every week and a few come in randomly every month or so, or parents bringing in kids for special occasions.

"But it's mainly sales, I've got 2,000 to 3,000 ex-rentals up for sale for £1 a time and I pride myself on being able to get pretty much anything anyone wants.

...

However, the rise of platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime has hit the business harder, especially in the last 12-18 months, with the rise of films being produced by the streaming giants.

"It's got to the stage now a new film will come out on Netflix and Amazon Prime before it actually comes out on DVD.

"Back in the day we always had a six-month window before it came out but now it's an impossible situation.

"Now they do things principally for Netflix or Amazon and then they come out on DVD," he said.

...

Mr Webber said, although trade had slowed down, he had never put a definitive date on when to shut up shop.

"I keep saying I'll close at the end of the year, then the end of the financial year.

"Then something will happen, it will pick up again."

He said he would keep going for as long as people were still enjoying it.

"To put it bluntly, the money I make out of this is what they call my beer money.

"Unless streaming services all go down or the world goes to pot, then I shall still be here. I shall be the last man standing," he said.
