I recently switched from Windows to Ubuntu on my laptop. Still getting the hang of Ubuntu, but I see a lot of comments on different posts in which a majority of them point to using Mint instead.

Would the best recommendation, be to switch to Mint from Ubuntu?

Apparently, Prism Launcher chose to adhere to the idiotic principle of the hidden "trashbin", .Trash-$(uid), invented by Ubuntu. Even though it's based on QT. This can't be disabled. It accumulated 139 GB of literal Trash, fully replaceable, over time. Just ... why? There's even an open issue about this, for over a year, referenced multiple times. I guess I have another point on my agenda.

Hi folks, as anticipated in the post title, I was wondering which open-source project to support as a user that can navigate the Linux environment but still does not have solid programming nor sysadmin skills. I probably could help with localization as I am native in Italian or I could test software, simulating a "typical user" interaction with it. What do you think? Is there a specific open-source project in need of help?

This week, we released KDE Gear 24.08.3 and we are preparing the 24.12.0 release with the beta planned next week. On immutable systems like bazzite, what's the best way to mount webdav storage as a file system in order to open it with Cryptomator?

options i'm thinking are:

1. use distrobox bc there i can install davfs and cryptomator
2. look for flatpak softwares that enables this function

I'm basically clueless. Any kind of info would be much appreciated.

Including all compressed Noto fonts, which require approximately 104MB of disk space, would be a worthwhile addition to the 2.8GB Fedora Silverblue image. This would provide out-of-the-box support for numerous writing systems worldwide. I hope that Fedora will consider including all Noto fonts in a future release.

However, I don't know where I should send my statement to them.

I'm running Jellyfin on a Debian-server in my home, and I have the associated media folders set up as samba shares so that I can transfer any new media from my laptop to the server through Dolphin (KDE file manager).

This has for the most part worked very well (except slow speeds), but I've had an issue recently where the files are not copied over properly. This resulted in glitches in for example music files that would stop playback. I checked the checksums of some of these files, and they were different from source. Seems like the glitchy files are missing some data, but at no point were I notified about this. It works fine after I removed the files and transferred again, and now the checksums match.

Is this a common issue with samba, or could it be a sign that my HDD is acting up?

I cannot install drupal 11 on a fresh Debian install, in fact I tried everything and it's no more the fault of proxmox, but the PHP installation.

Drupal 11 needs php 8.3 to work, but Debian official repos go only to php 8.2, so I used the sury.org Debian repo to install the latest PHP version. And this is the start of the problem, this install gives me the error shown in the other post, exhausted memory.

I search in the info.php, memory related stuff, and the only difference between the "official" PHP (8.2) and sury one is that in the mysqldn section it shows statistics to yes. But I don't know how to disable it...

Any ideas? Thanks 😉

For the first time I am actually switching my main PC from Windows to Linux.

Problem: When booting into Fedora there was no display output, I changed it to safe graphics to install everything and that fixed it but after the install finished I tried turning it back off and there was still no display output

What I have already tried: I've tried installing drivers and everything I could find although that shouldn't be the problem since I have an AMD 6700xt and Fedora comes with AMD drivers built in. I also tried Installing Linux Mint thinking maybe the distro was the problem but it came up with the same issue.

And if anyone suggests it no there is no way I am going to daily drive on safe graphics.

Edit: I am dual booting on a single 500gb ssd with windows already installed on the other half of the drive, not sure if that would be the problem. Also a similar problem was happening on windows if I left the screen in login for too long without signing in the display would show no signal and it wouldn't wake up if I moved my mouse or clicked or pressed any keys.

I am looking to build a Linux gaming machine with open source firmware and Intel ME disabled. Is this viable?

macOS has a variety of apps like Homerow, Shortcat, and KindaVim (watch the videos in those links if u can) that allow for navigation of apps using just the keyboard. Homerow allows for pressing a hotkey and then showing letters over UI elements which can be entered to move the mouse to said element, similar to the Vim easymotion plugin. KindaVim attempts to implement vim modal navigation inside GUI apps, so you can enter normal or visual mode and use j and k to move up or down. They all work using macOS' accessibility API which exposes UI elements for programmatic interaction.

I did a bunch of searches for Linux equivalent of such apps and Mac's accessibility API, and didn't find anything as comprehensive. Can you navigate a wide variety of Linux apps using mostly or only the keyboard (apps made with GTK, Electron, etc.)? Is it currently possible to develop an equivalent of the apps listed above?

I'm trying to update some nvidia drivers, and when I install them I set a password for secure boot, when do I put in the password to finish secure boot?

I just install a complete new Drupal install in a Debian VM inside proxmox, everything works as intended, but I cannot add content to it(it gives me a 500 error).

Apache logs show me that the memory is exhausted, search online, no real answer, tried a lot of thing in PHP.ini, .htaccess… At first the VM had 1 vcpu and 1GB of RAM, not working, I’ve put the PHP memory limit to 1GB, give 8GB to the vm, and 4vcpu. Not working, just “loading” the 500 longer.

Error got into /var/log/apache2/error.log : PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 262144 bytes)) in Unknown on line 0. This is why I give the vm 8GB and change php memory_limit to 1GB but it did nothing…

Have no solutions, as now. If you have one please let me know! thanks 🙂

EDIT: this is not the problem of drupal 11, tried to install it with drupal 10, same result, I think it has something to do with proxmox

This is just a post about satisfaction. After years of using Linux exclusively, I was going over my Feeder just now, and just figured that I automatically dismiss anything containing the words "Microsoft" or "Windows" in it.

This made me realize how much better we Linux users actually have it.

Anyway, that's all this is about.

I'm very curious of which distro users loves the most that they have it on their daily hardware?

I have been raging about the font rendering on Linux for years. It just sucks. Font has jagged edges and it looks very weird. I dual-boot with windows and the font there is very nice. So, I asked Claude ai to help me and it did a great job and my font is now is actually better than windows. I wanted to share it with everyone in case you have the same issue with the font on Linux.

Here it is:

1. First, install required packages:

sudo pacman -S freetype2 cairo fontconfig

2. Install better fonts:

sudo pacman -S ttf-dejavu ttf-liberation noto-fonts ttf-roboto ttf-roboto-mono ttf-droid ttf-opensans ttf-hack ttf-fira-code

I have also installed Segoe ui and Segoe UI Variable fonts and that is what I'm using now.

3. Create or edit the font configuration file:

sudo mkdir -p /etc/fonts/conf.d

sudo nano /etc/fonts/local.conf

4. Add this configuration to local.conf:

6. Add these export commands (I found it there already, but it was commented out. Just removed the "#"):

7. Enable subpixel rendering: (You might get a message that says "File exist", that's ok. It means it was already there)

sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/70-no-bitmaps.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/

sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/

8. Clear and regenerate font cache:

fc-cache -fv

9. For better Java application fonts:

sudo pacman -S jre-openjdk fontconfig

10. Reboot

Additional optional steps: a. For better Firefox font rendering, in about:config: Set

gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.rendering_mode

to 5 (This doesn't exist in FF. You create it, set it to "number" and give it a value of 5)

Set

gfx.webrender.all

to true

b. If you use VSCode, add to settings.json:

I have always been struggling to move big files from my Android phone to my Linux laptop. KDE connect is kind of working but is kind of cumbersome to set up on gnome with the extension that every now and then is incompatible. It also often loses the connection and you need to set it up again and then you forgot how to even get the UI for it because it's not an app but a gnome extension, etc. very cumbersome.

But I just saw that every android phone already has QuickShare build in to the sharing button. And now I saw that there is a Linux implementation of it and it's super nice that it's just an app. It looks a bit awkward because it's not a gnome application but other than that it works really nice.

i'm seriously considering permanently abandoning laptops in favor of tablets. i spent a day working on my wife's tablet today and it was fine enough for when you're on the go that the small screen isn't too much of an issue. plus, you get an extended battery life, no noise, more comfort carrying it around, and the best of all, for much less money

the biggest downside is that, since tablets are technically embedded devices, they're much more locked up and you basically have no access to the system with the stock rom

so im looking for a cheap tablet ($100-$200), around 10 inches, that i can easily (or at least reliably) install linux to. any recommendations?

It's possible to submit questions already. Getting a feeling there'll be some uncomfortable ones; we'll see if they dare to engage with those.

A lot of the frustration that people have stems from Firefox's deeply flawed financing model, whereby the focus can never be solely put on the quality of the browser. Personally, with Google now being recognized as a monopolist and Mozilla in danger of losing 85% of its funding, I hope they can adopt Thunderbird's financing model (i.e. donations).

Now that they're not doing fundraising for lawmaking and/or grassroots activism because their advocacy team shut down, I hope they'll get a few people together and start to raise money from the user base.

This could be a very positive change for Mozilla if they play it right.
